Chapter 13 — The Recording Grant Forgot

Chapter 13 — The Recording Grant Forgot

The recording was hidden inside a wedding ring box.

I found it at 1:26 in the morning.

Grant's wedding ring was gone.

The box wasn't.

It sat inside the back of my father's desk, beneath a false panel I had never known existed.

I stared at it for several seconds.

Then I opened it.

Inside was a small black memory card.

No label.

No date.

Nothing.

Just one word written beneath the lid.

GRANT.

Marcus stood behind me.

“Don't play it here.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if someone planted it, they may be listening.”

I closed the box.

“Then where?”

“The old bunker.”

My father's bunker.

The one beneath the Carlisle estate.

The place where my mother had supposedly been taken.

The place where Mercer wanted me to go.

I should have been afraid.

Instead, I felt something worse.

Hope.

Because if Grant had left a recording behind, perhaps he had known this day would come.

Perhaps he had been trying to tell me something.

Perhaps the man I hated had been preparing to save us.

Or perhaps it was another trap.

There was only one way to know.

The bunker door opened with a metallic groan.

Marcus checked the corridor.

“Clear.”

We entered.

The room smelled of dust and old concrete.

My father's equipment remained exactly where I remembered it.

A radio.

A desk.

Two metal chairs.

A wall covered in maps.

And a tape recorder.

I inserted the memory card.

The screen flickered.

Grant appeared.

He looked younger.

Maybe three years earlier.

His hair was darker.

His face less tired.

He sat alone in what looked like our kitchen.

Then he spoke.

“If you're watching this, Evelyn, I'm already compromised.”

I stopped breathing.

Marcus moved closer.

Grant continued.

“I don't know whether I'll be alive when you find this.”

He looked down.

“I hope I am.”

A pause.

“If I'm not, you need to know something.”

He leaned toward the camera.

“I never stopped loving you.”

I closed my eyes.

The words hurt more than I expected.

Then he continued.

“But love didn't protect you.”

He swallowed.

“Fear did the opposite.”

I watched silently.

“I was approached by a man named Jonathan Cross.”

Marcus looked at me.

Grant continued.

“He told me he knew about Lantern.”

“He told me he knew about your father.”

“And he told me Lily was in danger.”

My hands tightened.

“He showed me photographs.”

“Photographs of you.”

“Photographs of Lily.”

“Photographs of our house.”

Then Grant whispered:

“He told me that if I didn't cooperate, they would kill you.”

The screen went black for a second.

Then returned.

Grant looked exhausted.

“I believed him.”

I whispered:

“You idiot.”

Marcus said nothing.

Grant continued.

“I signed documents.”

“Insurance policies.”

“Custody papers.”

“Medical authorizations.”

“Everything.”

My heart sank.

“But there was one thing I refused to sign.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“The death certificate.”

I froze.

“What?”

Grant continued.

“They wanted a document stating that Evelyn died during the border operation.”

“I refused.”

“So they created one without me.”

Marcus looked at me.

“That means…”

“Yes,” I whispered.

“They forged the death.”

Grant continued.

“And that's when I realized the truth.”

He leaned closer.

“Evelyn wasn't supposed to die.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She was supposed to disappear.”

The recording continued.

“They didn't want your body.”

“They wanted your identity.”

Grant explained that Lantern had spent years preparing a replacement.

A woman who could assume my life.

My home.

My marriage.

My reputation.

My federal access.

My financial accounts.

My name.

Vanessa.

But there was one problem.

“She couldn't become Evelyn while Evelyn was alive.”

My stomach turned.

“So they needed me gone.”

Grant nodded on the screen.

“And that's when Vanessa arrived.”

He looked away.

“I was told she was an asset.”

“But she was more than that.”

“She was the person they wanted to put in your place.”

I looked at Marcus.

“The replacement.”

He nodded.

Grant continued.

“I tried to stop it.”

“I tried to expose Cross.”

“But someone inside the federal team was already working for him.”

“Shaw.”

I clenched my fists.

“That's when everything collapsed.”

Grant rubbed his face.

“I was given an order.”

“Take Lily.”

“Move her to a private facility.”

“Wait for further instructions.”

“I didn't know what they intended to do.”

“Then I saw the documents.”

He looked terrified.

“They weren't planning to protect Lily.”

“They were planning to activate her.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

CHILD ACTIVATION PROTOCOL.

Beneath it:

SUBJECT: LILY CARLISLE

AGE: SIX

REQUIRED GENETIC CONTRIBUTORS: EVELYN CARLISLE / LILY CARLISLE

POST-ACTIVATION PROCEDURE: TERMINATION OF MATERNAL SUBJECT

I felt sick.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“That's the same protocol.”

I nodded.

But then another line appeared.

One I had never seen.

SECONDARY PROCEDURE: TRANSFER OF CHILD CUSTODY TO AUTHORIZED FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE.

Marcus looked at me.

“Family representative.”

I whispered:

“Grant.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“No?”

Marcus pointed at the screen.

“Read the name.”

I did.

My blood froze.

AUTHORIZED FAMILY REPRESENTATIVE: ABIGAIL MERCER.

Vanessa.

My aunt.

The woman who had claimed she wanted to protect Lily.

The woman who had been manipulated by Lantern.

They wanted to give Lily to her after I was dead.

I sat down.

“They were going to make Vanessa her legal mother.”

“Yes.”

“After killing me.”

“Yes.”

“And Grant?”

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Probably disposable.”

The recording continued.

Grant appeared again.

“I found out what they intended to do.”

“And I realized Vanessa didn't know everything.”

“I confronted her.”

“She told me she remembered pieces of her past.”

“She didn't know why she had been sent into our lives.”

“She thought she was being used to replace you.”

“But she didn't know about Lily.”

Grant looked into the camera.

“Until I told her.”

I froze.

“When?”

Grant answered.

“The night Lily was born.”

The recording changed again.

A hospital corridor.

Grant walking.

Vanessa following.

They stopped outside a hospital room.

My room.

Lily's first cry could be heard faintly through the door.

Vanessa began crying.

Grant spoke to her.

“You have to leave.”

“No.”

“They'll know.”

“I don't care.”

“You can't stay.”

“I want to see her.”

“She isn't yours.”

Vanessa looked at him.

“She is my blood.”

Grant shook his head.

“She is Evelyn's daughter.”

Vanessa whispered:

“And mine.”

The recording stopped.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus looked confused.

“What does she mean?”

I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

Then I remembered my mother's words.

Abigail was Thomas Vale's daughter.

And now—

Abigail Mercer.

The family lines were tangled.

Vale.

Mercer.

Carlisle.

My father had hidden something.

Something about Lily.

The recording resumed.

Grant was back on screen.

“There is something I never told Evelyn.”

He looked frightened.

“Lily is not only genetically connected to Lantern.”

“She was created as the final safeguard.”

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Grant continued.

“Your father knew the archive would eventually be discovered.”

“He built a second system.”

“One that could destroy the archive.”

I stared.

“Lily.”

Grant nodded.

“Lily is not the administrator.”

“She is the failsafe.”

My heart stopped.

“The archive needs her to open.”

“But if she refuses…”

“It destroys itself.”

Marcus looked at me.

“How could a five-year-old refuse?”

Grant answered.

“Because the system was designed to recognize consent.”

I stared at the screen.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Grant explained.

“It isn't a machine.”

“It is a genetic authorization protocol combined with a psychological trigger.”

“Your father believed no one should control the archive.”

“So he made the final decision impossible to force.”

“The child has to choose.”

I remembered the words carved into the black key.

THE CHILD CHOOSES FIRST.

My breath caught.

Lily hadn't simply been carrying the key.

She had been carrying the decision.

Then the recording became distorted.

Grant's voice changed.

“I need Evelyn to know one more thing.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“If I ever appear to betray her, believe the opposite.”

I froze.

“What?”

Grant continued.

“If I push her away, I'm trying to protect her.”

“If I cooperate with Vanessa, I'm buying time.”

“If I sign documents, I'm creating evidence.”

“If I lie, it's because someone is listening.”

I covered my mouth.

The years of betrayal.

The coldness.

The lies.

The secret accounts.

Maybe some of them had been deliberate.

But not all.

Then Grant said something that broke me.

“I need her to hate me.”

I whispered:

“Why?”

“Because if she loves me, she'll try to save me.”

He looked down.

“And that will get her killed.”

The screen flickered.

Grant looked back up.

“If you're watching this, Evelyn, I'm sorry.”

“I wanted to tell you.”

“Every day.”

“But I couldn't.”

“I couldn't risk Lily.”

Then he whispered:

“Please forgive me.”

The recording ended.

I sat in silence.

Marcus didn't speak.

For several minutes, neither of us moved.

Then I noticed something.

The recording had not ended completely.

There was another file.

FINAL_01

I opened it.

Grant appeared again.

This time he was somewhere else.

A dark room.

His face was bruised.

He looked directly at the camera.

“They know I'm recording.”

A pause.

“I don't have much time.”

He looked behind him.

Then whispered:

“Evelyn, don't trust your mother.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Grant continued.

“She is not being held by Mercer.”

Marcus turned toward me.

“What?”

Grant whispered:

“She went there willingly.”

I stared.

“No.”

“She knows where the archive is.”

“She knows what Lily is.”

“And she has been working with Mercer.”

I felt numb.

“No.”

Grant continued.

“I know this sounds impossible.”

“But I saw the files.”

“Elizabeth Carlisle has been part of Lantern since the beginning.”

My mother's face appeared in my mind.

The woman who had told me she loved me.

The woman who had warned me.

The woman who had disappeared.

My mother.

A traitor?

Grant looked terrified.

“Don't let her near Lily.”

Then he leaned toward the camera.

“There is one person you can trust.”

I waited.

Grant whispered:

“Abigail.”

The screen went black.

I stood so quickly the chair fell behind me.

“No.”

Marcus caught my arm.

“Evelyn.”

“My mother.”

“We don't know if the recording is authentic.”

“Grant knew things he couldn't have known otherwise.”

“We still need proof.”

I looked at him.

“Then let's find it.”

The bunker door suddenly slammed.

Marcus turned.

Locked.

We heard footsteps outside.

Several.

Then a voice.

My mother's voice.

“Evelyn.”

My blood froze.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

I stepped toward the door.

“Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Are you working for Mercer?”

Silence.

Then:

“I was.”

I closed my eyes.

My heart broke.

“Why?”

“Because I had no choice.”

“That's what everyone says.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“You endangered Lily.”

“No.”

Her voice became desperate.

“I protected Lily.”

I stared at the door.

“From whom?”

“From everyone.”

The door opened.

My mother stood there.

She was crying.

Behind her were federal agents.

But none wore federal uniforms.

They wore black.

Marcus raised his weapon.

My mother shouted:

“Don't!”

One of the men aimed at him.

I moved between them.

“Lower your weapons.”

No one moved.

My mother looked at me.

“Evelyn, listen to me.”

“I've listened enough.”

“You think Grant told you the truth.”

“He did.”

“He didn't know everything.”

“Neither did you.”

She flinched.

Then she said:

“Grant wasn't protecting you.”

“What?”

“He was protecting himself.”

“No.”

“He made a deal with Mercer.”

My stomach twisted.

“What deal?”

“To keep Lily alive.”

I shook my head.

“You're lying.”

My mother looked at the recording.

Then at me.

“Ask yourself why Grant left you that recording.”

I didn't answer.

She whispered:

“Because he knew he was going to die.”

A gunshot exploded outside.

Everyone froze.

Then another.

The lights went out.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Move!”

We ran through the emergency tunnel.

Behind us, my mother's voice echoed:

“Evelyn!”

I turned once.

She stood in the doorway.

And she wasn't looking at me.

She was looking at the memory card.

Then she shouted:

“Your father never trusted Grant!”

The door slammed.

We ran.

We emerged outside several minutes later.

Snow covered the ground.

Marcus looked at me.

“Where now?”

I stared at the memory card in my hand.

“Back to the secure residence.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily is the failsafe.”

“And?”

I looked toward the dark horizon.

“Mercer wants to control her.”

My voice hardened.

“My mother wants to protect her.”

“Grant wanted to save her.”

“And Vanessa?”

I thought about Abigail.

The woman who had been forced to live seven lives.

The woman who had finally remembered her own name.

“She wants redemption.”

Marcus nodded.

“And you?”

I looked at the memory card.

“I want the truth.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A child's voice spoke.

“Mommy?”

I froze.

“Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Grandma came back.”

My blood ran cold.

“Lily, lock the door.”

“I did.”

“Stay away from her.”

“But Mommy…”

“What?”

“She said something.”

“What did she say?”

Lily whispered:

“She said Daddy lied about the recording.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

Then Lily said:

“Because Grandma made him record it.”

The call ended.

I stared at Marcus.

He stared back.

Neither of us spoke.

The recording in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

Grant hadn't forgotten it.

He hadn't hidden it.

Someone had wanted me to find it.

And if Lily was telling the truth—

May you like

the recording that had just changed everything…

might have been the biggest lie yet.
