The following morning, Daniel visited Elena in the hospital.
She apologized before he could speak.
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect your mother better."
Daniel shook his head.
"You already did."
Elena hesitated before reaching into her backpack.
She handed him a tiny silver object.
A voice recorder.
"I started carrying it after Mrs. Vanessa realized there were hidden cameras."
Daniel pressed play.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"If the old woman dies before Daniel gets home, no one will question it."
Another voice answered.
Mark.
"The paperwork is almost finished. After that, Daniel becomes the problem."
The room fell silent.
