Chapter 2: The Name on the Deed
Clara's smile lingered.
She crossed her arms confidently.
"You finally remembered."
"I've been taking care of everything while you were away."
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Then he quietly asked his mother,
"Mom..."
"Did you eat lunch today?"
She hesitated.
"I wasn't very hungry."
Clara answered before she could continue.
"She skipped lunch herself."
Daniel opened the refrigerator.
Every shelf was full.
Fresh fruit.
Imported cheese.
Prepared meals.
He turned back toward his mother.
"What did you eat yesterday?"
His mother's eyes filled with tears.
"Rice..."
"And tea."
Clara rolled her eyes.
"Oh, please. She's making herself into a victim."
Daniel didn't argue.
He simply walked upstairs.
A minute later, he returned carrying a small fireproof document box.
He placed it on the kitchen table.
Clara frowned.
"What's that?"
"The reason you should have never confused living here..."
"...with owning it."
He unlocked the box.
Inside were the original property documents.
The deed listed only one owner.
Daniel Reyes.
Clara frowned.
"But..."
"My name is on the utilities."
"You let me manage everything."
Daniel nodded.
"I let you pay bills."
"I never gave away my home."
Then he removed another folder.
