Chapter 3: The Promise He Made Years Ago

Inside the folder was a notarized trust agreement.

Years before leaving for the United States, Daniel had quietly created it with his attorney.

If anything ever happened to him...

Every major asset would pass directly to one person.

Not his wife.

His mother.

Clara stared in disbelief.

"You left everything to her?"

Daniel answered calmly.

"She spent her life sacrificing for me."

"I wanted to make sure she'd never have to depend on anyone else's kindness."

His mother gasped.

"I never knew..."

"You weren't supposed to."

Clara's voice rose.

"This is ridiculous!"

"I'm your wife!"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"And while I was working sixteen-hour shifts overseas..."

"...you made my seventy-year-old mother scrub marble floors."

Silence.

Then he quietly asked one final question.

"Did you think she'd never tell me?"

His mother whispered,

"I didn't want to ruin your marriage."

Daniel knelt beside her.

May you like

"You didn't."

"Someone else did."
