Brenda laughed.
"You can't throw me out."
Marcus didn't answer.
He gently lifted Lily into his arms.
Her forehead was burning.
"Maya," he said softly, "go get your shoes. We're taking her to the pediatric urgent care."
Maya looked exhausted.
"What about dinner?"
Marcus glanced at the half-cut vegetables.
"There will always be another dinner."
"There isn't another Lily."
He carried his daughter toward the front door.
Then, without another word, he opened his phone.
He typed a single message.
Effective immediately, suspend all discretionary payments from the Hawthorne Family Trust until further review. Schedule an emergency trustees' meeting tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
He pressed Send.
Brenda's smile disappeared.
"What did you just do?"
