Chapter 3: The Leverage She Never Really Had

The next morning, Brenda arrived at the law office expecting to intimidate everyone.

Instead...

She found the family attorney waiting.

"Mrs. Hawthorne," he said politely, "please have a seat."

She folded her arms.

"My son has lost his mind."

The attorney opened a thick folder.

"Actually..."

"Your son is now the acting trustee."

Brenda frowned.

"That's impossible."

"The trust belonged to my husband."

"It did."

"And according to his will, Marcus became co-trustee upon his thirty-fifth birthday."

She stared blankly.

"I've managed everything for years."

"You administered the trust."

"You never owned it."

The attorney continued.

"The trust also contains a wellness clause."

"If any beneficiary uses trust assets while neglecting the care of dependent family members residing in the household..."

"...the trustee may suspend discretionary benefits."

Brenda whispered,

"He actually did it..."

The attorney nodded.

"Entirely within his authority."

Rachel checked her banking app.
