CHAPTER 11 — THE NIGHT THEY TRIED TO TAKE HER

CHAPTER 11 — THE NIGHT THEY TRIED TO TAKE HER
The road to the Marquez estate disappeared into darkness.
There were no streetlights.
No houses.
Only mountains, olive trees, and the narrow ribbon of asphalt cutting through the countryside.
I drove with both hands locked around the steering wheel.
Elena sat beside me.
Beatriz was in the back.
Daniel followed several hundred meters behind in a separate vehicle.
Nobody spoke.
We had spent the last hour trying to understand the photograph.
The elderly woman.
Isabella.
And the man standing behind them.
Adrian.
The same man who had been watching my daughter.
The same man who had disappeared for eleven years.
The same man who looked enough like me to confuse a frightened child.
But one question remained.
Why had Elena said Adrian was Isabella's father?
I finally broke the silence.
"Tell me the truth."
Elena stared through the windshield.
"I am."
"Is Adrian Isabella's biological father?"
"No."
I looked at her.
"Then why did you say he was?"
"Because that's what they want you to believe."
"Who?"
"My grandmother."
"Lucia."
"Yes."
I tightened my grip on the wheel.
"Then why does she want Isabella?"
"Because Isabella is the last person who can expose her."
"Expose her for what?"
Elena turned toward me.
"Everything."
She hesitated.
"Money laundering. Blackmail. Illegal property transfers. Political manipulation. Murder."
I stared at her.
"How long has she been doing this?"
"Longer than we've been alive."
"And my father?"
"Worked for her."
The words settled heavily between us.
"My father worked for Lucia."
"Yes."
"Then Gabriel?"
"Also."
"And Adrian?"
"His son."
I shook my head.
"Everyone is connected."
Elena gave a bitter smile.
"That's what happens when a family builds an empire from secrets."
At 11:52 p.m., the Marquez estate appeared.
It stood on a hill above the valley.
Huge.
Ancient.
Almost completely dark.
Only one light burned in the central tower.
I stopped the car at the gate.
The gates opened automatically.
Nobody touched them.
Daniel called.
"Don't go farther."
I answered.
"We're already inside."
"That wasn't my point."
"I know."
"I'll circle the property."
"Stay close."
I ended the call.
The gate closed behind us.
I felt something inside me tighten.
We were trapped.
Elena looked at the house.
"I haven't been here since I was twenty-two."
"Why did you leave?"
"My grandmother told me I was worthless."
I looked at her.
"She said that?"
"She said I was too weak to inherit."
"And Isabella?"
"She's different."
"How?"
"She's not afraid of her."
I looked at Elena.
"How do you know?"
"Because I saw her face in that photograph."
Elena smiled faintly.
"Isabella isn't surrendering."
We entered through the main doors.
The foyer smelled of old wood and roses.
No guards.
No staff.
No sound.
"Isabella!"
My voice echoed.
Nothing.
Then a woman's voice came from upstairs.
"Welcome home."
I froze.
Elena whispered:
"That's her."
A woman appeared at the top of the staircase.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
Black dress.
She looked older than the woman in the photograph.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
My mother's eyes.
I couldn't breathe.
She smiled.
"My son."
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
"Mother."
She slowly descended.
"You finally came."
I stared at her.
"You've been alive all these years."
"Yes."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I had to."
"Why?"
"Because your father wanted me dead."
I laughed once.
A bitter, broken sound.
"My father?"
She nodded.
"He betrayed me."
Elena stepped forward.
"You betrayed everyone."
The woman looked at her.
"Still dramatic."
"You took Isabella."
"I protected her."
"You tortured her."
"I tested her."
My blood boiled.
"Where is my daughter?"
My mother smiled.
"Safe."
"Bring her here."
"No."
I stepped forward.
"Bring her here now."
She looked at me.
"Or what?"
I stared at her.
"You don't know what I'm capable of."
She smiled.
"I know exactly what you're capable of."
Then she said something that stopped me.
"Your father taught me."
A door opened behind us.
Adrian entered.
He looked almost exactly as I remembered him from the photograph.
Except older.
Harder.
There was a scar across his eyebrow.
Isabella's scar.
No.
Not hers.
His.
I looked at him.
"You."
Adrian smiled.
"Hello, brother."
I stared.
"You've been watching Isabella."
"Yes."
"You hurt her."
"No."
"She carried garbage."
"That was Beatriz."
I turned.
Beatriz went pale.
"What?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Tell him."
Beatriz shook her head.
"I didn't."
Adrian laughed.
"You always were a coward."
I stepped between them.
"Who ordered it?"
Adrian looked at me.
"You think I'm the villain."
"Aren't you?"
"No."
He glanced toward Elena.
"She knows."
Elena nodded.
"Adrian protected Isabella."
I stared at her.
"What?"
"He was the one leaving food outside her bedroom."
"He was the one sabotaging the surveillance."
"He was trying to keep Gabriel's people from reaching her."
I looked at Adrian.
"Then why did she fear you?"
"Because I needed her to."
"Why?"
"Because if she trusted me, Gabriel would know."
I felt sick.
"So all of this..."
"Was a war."
My mother turned toward the staircase.
"Bring her down."
A door opened.
Isabella appeared.
She was holding the hand of an older man.
I recognized him.
Gabriel.
Alive.
My heart stopped.
He smiled.
"Hello."
I stepped forward.
"Stay away from my daughter."
He laughed.
"Your daughter?"
He looked at my mother.
Then Adrian.
Then Elena.
"You still don't understand."
"What?"
Gabriel pointed toward Isabella.
"She isn't the prize."
"She's the witness."
I felt a chill.
"Witness to what?"
He smiled.
"The night your father died."
I froze.
"My father died of a heart attack."
"No."
Gabriel shook his head.
"He was murdered."
My mother looked away.
I stared at her.
"Did you kill him?"
She didn't answer.
Gabriel laughed.
"Ask her."
I turned.
"Mother?"
Silence.
"Did you kill my father?"
She finally spoke.
"No."
I exhaled.
Then she added:
"But I watched him die."
I felt the blood leave my face.
"What happened?"
"He discovered the truth."
"What truth?"
"That Lucia wasn't the mastermind."
I stared.
"Then who was?"
My mother looked toward Isabella.
"Your father."
Silence.
Gabriel smiled.
"Now we're getting somewhere."
My mother explained.
The Marquez empire had existed for generations.
Lucia controlled the financial network.
My father controlled the legal structure.
Gabriel controlled enforcement.
But there was one person above them.
The person who created the system.
The person who had manipulated all three families.
The person whose identity had been hidden for decades.
I asked:
"Who?"
My mother looked at me.
"Your grandfather."
I stared.
"He's dead."
"Yes."
"Then how?"
"He left instructions."
"Instructions for what?"
"To continue the empire."
I looked at Isabella.
She was silent.
Watching everything.
My daughter wasn't crying.
She wasn't frightened.
She was studying the adults.
Just as she had done for years.
I knelt beside her.
"Are you okay?"
She nodded.
"Did they hurt you?"
"No."
"Did anyone touch you?"
She shook her head.
Then she whispered:
"Dad."
"Yes?"
"I remember."
My heart stopped.
"Remember what?"
"The night Mommy disappeared."
Elena rushed toward her.
"What do you remember?"
Isabella looked at her.
"Mommy was fighting with the man."
"Which man?"
"The man with the scar."
Adrian froze.
"Me?"
Isabella shook her head.
"No."
She pointed behind him.
"That man."
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
I had never seen him before.
He was tall.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
And carrying a gun.
My mother whispered:
"No."
The man smiled.
"Hello, Isabella."
I stepped in front of my daughter.
"Who are you?"
He looked at me.
Then at Elena.
Then at Adrian.
Finally, he smiled.
"My name is Victor Marquez."
Elena's face drained of color.
"My father."
Victor raised the gun.
"Exactly."
Everything happened at once.
Daniel burst through the side entrance.
"DOWN!"
A gunshot exploded.
Glass shattered.
I grabbed Isabella and pulled her behind the stone staircase.
Elena dropped beside us.
Beatriz screamed.
Adrian tackled Victor.
Another gunshot.
Then another.
The estate erupted into chaos.
I covered Isabella's head.
"Stay down."
She clung to me.
"Dad."
"I'm here."
"Don't let him take me."
"I won't."
Adrian wrestled Victor toward the corridor.
Gabriel disappeared through another door.
My mother screamed something in Spanish.
Daniel returned fire from the foyer.
Then the lights came on.
Bright.
Blinding.
For a second, everyone froze.
Victor was standing over Adrian.
Gun raised.
I saw the trigger move.
I didn't think.
I ran.
I hit Victor from the side.
The gun fired.
The bullet struck the ceiling.
Victor fell.
Adrian grabbed the weapon.
Daniel rushed forward.
"Don't!"
Adrian stopped.
Victor stared at me.
"You have no idea what you've done."
I looked at him.
"I know exactly what I've done."
I picked up Isabella.
"And I'm taking my daughter home."
Victor laughed.
"You think this ends here?"
I turned.
"No."
He smiled.
"Good."
Then he said:
"Because Isabella is about to tell you why your father really died."
I looked at my daughter.
She was staring at Victor.
Then she whispered:
"He was there."
I crouched.
"Who?"
"My father."
I felt my heart stop.
"Who was your father?"
Isabella pointed at Victor.
"Grandpa."
Silence.
Elena covered her mouth.
My mother began crying.
Adrian stared at Isabella.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"Now you understand."
I looked at Elena.
"You said I was her father."
She was crying.
"I am sorry."
I stared at Isabella.
Then at Victor.
Then at my mother.
Everything I believed had collapsed.
But one detail didn't fit.
If Victor was Isabella's biological father...
why had Elena spent years protecting me?
Why had my father listed me as Isabella's guardian?
Why had Gabriel wanted her?
And why had Isabella been raised believing I was her father?
Then Isabella said something that changed everything.
"He's lying."
Everyone went silent.
Victor's smile disappeared.
Isabella looked directly at him.
"You're not my daddy."
Victor's face hardened.
"How would you know?"
She touched her chest.
"Mommy told me."
Elena stared at her daughter.
"What did I tell you?"
Isabella answered:
"You said my daddy has the same eyes as me."
She turned toward me.
"And you do."
I couldn't breathe.
Victor raised his gun again.
Adrian moved first.
He struck Victor's wrist.
The weapon fell.
Daniel tackled him.
My mother screamed.
"Take Isabella and go!"
I didn't hesitate.
I grabbed my daughter.
Elena followed.
Beatriz came behind us.
We ran through the side corridor.
Outside, sirens were approaching.
Daniel had already called the authorities.
But as we reached the cars, Isabella suddenly stopped.
She looked back toward the house.
"Dad."
"What?"
"There's something else."
"What?"
She pointed toward the upper window.
A figure stood behind the glass.
Gabriel.
He was holding a folder.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
He pressed the photograph against the glass.
It showed me.
Elena.
And Isabella.
Taken the night Isabella was born.
On the back were four words:
THE DNA TEST WAS ALTERED.
My blood turned cold.
I looked at Elena.
She understood.
Someone had falsified the original DNA results.
Which meant we still didn't know who Isabella's biological father was.
And whoever had altered those records had done it deliberately.
The night wasn't over.
It had only exposed the next layer of the lie.
We escaped the estate before the police arrived.
At dawn, we stopped at a safe house outside Granada.
Isabella slept beside Elena.
I sat alone in the kitchen.
Beatriz entered.
She placed a file on the table.
"I found this in Victor's room."
I opened it.
Inside were DNA reports.
Three tests.
All different.
One said I was Isabella's father.
One said Victor was.
One said neither of us was.
I stared at the reports.
"Which one is real?"
Beatriz shook her head.
"I don't know."
I looked at the dates.
The first test had been performed before Isabella was born.
The second shortly after.
The third three months ago.
Three different laboratories.
Three different results.
Then I noticed the signature on all three.
The same doctor.
Dr. Rafael Ortega.
I knew that name.
Everyone in my family did.
He had been my father's personal physician.
He had also signed my mother's death certificate.
I looked at Beatriz.
"Where is he now?"
She swallowed.
"Dead."
I almost laughed.
"Of course."
But then she shook her head.
"No."
"What?"
"He died on paper."
I stared at her.
"He's alive."
"Where?"
She looked toward the sleeping child in the next room.
"At the hospital in Málaga."
I stood.
"Then we're going."
Beatriz grabbed my arm.
"There's something you need to know first."
"What?"
She looked terrified.
"Dr. Ortega wasn't the man who altered the DNA."
"Then who was?"
Beatriz whispered:
"The person who ordered him to do it."
"Who?"
She looked at me.
"Elena."
I froze.
Behind us, Elena appeared in the doorway.
She had heard everything.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"That's not what happened."
I stared at her.
"Then tell me the truth."
She looked at Isabella.
Then at me.
"I altered the test."
My heart stopped.
"Why?"
She whispered:
"Because the real father was never supposed to know Isabella existed."
"Who?"
Elena closed her eyes.
Then said the name I least expected.
"Gabriel."
I felt the room tilt.
But before I could respond, a scream came from the bedroom.
Isabella.
I ran.
Her bed was empty.
The window was open.
On the pillow was another note.
This time, only one sentence:
THE REAL FATHER IS COMING FOR HER.
I stared at the words.
Then I heard a phone ringing downstairs.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I answered.
A man's voice whispered:
"Now you know why everyone lied."
"Who are you?"
He laughed softly.
"The father you never knew existed."
The call ended.
I looked at Elena.
Her face was frozen in terror.
"Who was that?"
She whispered:
May you like
"Gabriel."
And somewhere outside the safe house, a car engine roared to life.
