CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN HE BROUGHT INTO MY HOME

CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN HE BROUGHT INTO MY HOME

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The house was still dark.

Broken glass glittered across the marble floor.

Somewhere outside, an alarm was screaming.

And Adrian Vale stood in my hallway holding the ledger that apparently explained the entire life I had thought I understood.

Behind me, Marcus said nothing.

That silence told me more than any confession could.

I looked at Adrian.

“Say it again.”

He tilted his head.

“You heard me.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“I want to hear it from him.”

I turned toward Marcus.

“Tell me.”

He looked exhausted.

“Clara…”

“Tell me the truth.”

He swallowed.

“You are the legal beneficiary of the Vale-Vance Trust.”

I frowned.

“That means nothing to me.”

“It should.”

“Then explain it.”

Marcus looked at Adrian.

Adrian nodded.

Marcus finally said:

“Your father built an investment network decades ago. It became worth billions.”

I stared at him.

“My father was an accountant.”

“That was the cover.”

My heart hammered.

“And you knew?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before I met you.”

I closed my eyes.

The pain was almost physical.

“You knew who I was before our first date.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was going to inherit it.”

“Yes.”

“And you still looked me in the eyes and told me you loved me.”

Marcus didn't answer.

I laughed.

It sounded broken.

“Unbelievable.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Marcus wasn't the only one who lied to you.”

I looked at him.

“Then tell me everything.”

He opened the ledger.

“Your father didn't create the trust for himself.”

He turned a page.

“He created it for you.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew the people around him would eventually try to control it.”

I stared at the handwriting.

My father's handwriting.

There were pages filled with numbers, names, dates, transfers.

At the bottom of one page was a sentence.

Clara must never know until she is ready.

I whispered:

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“About Marcus?”

“Not specifically.”

“Then why send him?”

Adrian smiled.

“I didn't.”

I looked at Marcus.

He flinched.

“You volunteered?”

Marcus finally spoke.

“I thought I could control the situation.”

“You thought you could control me.”

“Yes.”

“And Chloe?”

Adrian's expression changed.

“She was brought into the house for the same reason.”

I froze.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I shook my head.

“I hired her.”

“You were manipulated into hiring her.”

“By whom?”

“Eleanor.”

I stared.

“My mother-in-law?”

Adrian nodded.

“She knew exactly who Chloe was.”

The truth came in pieces.

And every piece hurt.

Eleanor had known about Chloe's connection to Marcus.

She had known about the hidden documents.

She had known Marcus was trying to gain control of the trust.

She had even encouraged Clara to hire Chloe.

Not because Chloe was desperate.

Not because she needed a second chance.

But because Eleanor wanted a woman inside the house who could monitor Clara.

I looked at Marcus.

“Did your mother know?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

I felt something inside me crack.

I had paid for Eleanor's cruises.

Her medical bills.

Her designer clothes.

Her private club membership.

I had treated her like my own mother.

And she had been helping her son dismantle my life.

I whispered:

“She never loved me.”

Marcus looked down.

“She did.”

“No.”

He looked up.

“She loved what you gave us.”

That hurt more than I expected.

Because he was right.

Then I remembered something.

“Where is Chloe?”

Adrian closed the ledger.

“Alive.”

I stared at him.

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“You took her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That Marcus was planning to betray everyone.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“That isn't fair.”

Adrian laughed.

“You were going to steal the trust.”

“I was trying to survive.”

“You were trying to own her.”

Marcus looked at me.

“I didn't know how deep it went.”

Adrian's voice hardened.

“You knew enough.”

I stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both men stopped.

I looked at Adrian.

“Bring Chloe here.”

“That would be dangerous.”

“I don't care.”

“She knows too much.”

“So do I.”

He studied me.

Then nodded.

“Very well.”

He took out his phone.

One call.

Five words.

“Bring the girl to the house.”

Then he hung up.

Twenty minutes later, the front door opened.

Chloe walked inside.

Her face was pale.

Her hair was disheveled.

She wore the same clothes from earlier.

But she looked different.

No makeup.

No carefully controlled expression.

Just fear.

She saw me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Clara…”

I didn't move.

She stopped several feet away.

“I’m sorry.”

I crossed my arms.

“Tell me why.”

She cried.

“I didn't know how to stop it.”

“Stop what?”

“This.”

She looked around.

“The plan.”

I stared at her.

“Whose plan?”

“Marcus's.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That isn't true.”

Chloe turned toward him.

“You told me she would sign.”

“I never said—”

“You said she was too trusting.”

Marcus went silent.

“You said she loved you too much to question you.”

I looked at him.

He didn't deny it.

Chloe continued.

“You said after the anniversary, she'd sign everything.”

I felt my hands go cold.

“What exactly was I supposed to sign?”

She looked at Adrian.

He nodded.

Chloe swallowed.

“Control of the trust.”

“And then?”

“Control of the companies.”

“And the house?”

She hesitated.

“Eventually.”

I laughed.

“Eventually.”

She cried harder.

“I didn't want to hurt you.”

“But you did.”

“I know.”

“You lived in my house.”

“Yes.”

“You ate at my table.”

“Yes.”

“You called me family.”

“I meant it.”

I stared at her.

“That makes it worse.”

She lowered her head.

“I know.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Clara, please.”

I turned toward him.

“You don't get to say please.”

“I never wanted this to happen.”

“You planned it.”

“I changed.”

“When?”

“I don't know.”

“After you slept with her?”

His face tightened.

“No.”

“Then when?”

He couldn't answer.

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

Adrian watched silently.

I looked at him.

“Why did you let this happen?”

He didn't respond.

“Why did you allow Marcus to marry me?”

“Because I needed him close to you.”

“For what?”

“To protect the trust.”

I laughed.

“You call this protection?”

“No.”

He looked toward Marcus.

“I call it a failure.”

Marcus glared.

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed my life.”

“No.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You destroyed your own life.”

Then Chloe said something that changed everything.

“There's another person.”

I turned.

“What?”

“Someone above Marcus.”

Adrian's face became serious.

“Chloe.”

She looked at him.

“You promised.”

“I promised to keep you alive.”

“You didn't promise to keep me quiet.”

I stepped closer.

“Who?”

Chloe looked at Marcus.

Then at Adrian.

Then finally at me.

“Your mother.”

I stopped breathing.

“My mother?”

“Evelyn.”

I shook my head.

“My mother died eight years ago.”

Chloe's eyes filled with fear.

“No.”

“She died.”

“No, Clara.”

“She died in a car accident.”

Chloe whispered:

“That wasn't an accident.”

The room went silent.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Adrian closed the ledger.

“Chloe.”

But it was too late.

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

He said nothing.

“You knew my mother was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I am not.”

“Then why did Chloe say—”

“Because she saw a file.”

“What file?”

“A medical file.”

I looked at Chloe.

“Where?”

“In Marcus's office.”

I turned toward Marcus.

He looked terrified.

“Show me.”

“Clara…”

“Show me.”

He didn't move.

I walked toward him.

“Now.”

The office was destroyed.

Drawers had been emptied.

Folders scattered across the floor.

Someone had searched the room.

Marcus looked at the mess.

“I didn't do this.”

I crouched.

A piece of paper lay beneath the desk.

I picked it up.

It was a hospital discharge record.

Patient:

EVELYN VANCE.

Date:

Eight years earlier.

Status:

Transferred to private facility.

I stared at the page.

“She survived.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who took her?”

Adrian answered.

“Your father.”

I looked at him.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew someone was trying to kill her.”

“Who?”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked away.

Then I understood.

“Eleanor.”

He didn't speak.

I whispered:

“My mother-in-law tried to kill my mother?”

“Not directly,” Adrian said.

“But she arranged it.”

I sat on the floor.

Everything had become too much.

My father alive.

My mother alive.

Marcus's betrayal.

Chloe's manipulation.

Eleanor's lies.

Adrian's secrets.

It was impossible to know what was real anymore.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A text appeared.

STOP LISTENING TO ADRIAN.

Another message.

HE IS LYING ABOUT YOUR FATHER.

Then:

ASK HIM WHY HE WAS IN THE CAR THAT NIGHT.

I looked up.

Adrian was watching me.

“What?”

I showed him the message.

His expression changed.

“Who sent that?”

“I don't know.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Give me the phone.”

“No.”

“Clara.”

“No.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Were you in the car when my father disappeared?”

He didn't answer.

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

My heart pounded.

“What happened?”

“I tried to save him.”

“From whom?”

He looked at Marcus.

“From him.”

Marcus went pale.

“What?”

Adrian pointed at him.

“Marcus was driving.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I didn't know who was inside.”

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You were told to take him to the river.”

“I thought it was a business meeting.”

“Stop lying.”

Marcus backed away.

I stared at him.

“You were driving the car that night.”

“Yes.”

“And my father was inside.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Marcus's voice broke.

“The brakes failed.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“They didn't fail.”

I stared.

“Then what happened?”

Adrian said:

“They were cut.”

Nobody spoke.

Even the house seemed to hold its breath.

I looked at Marcus.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“You swear?”

“Yes.”

“Then who cut them?”

Adrian looked toward the window.

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

“Then why tell me?”

“Because the person who cut those brakes is the same person who is trying to destroy you now.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

Adrian's eyes met mine.

“Someone inside your family.”

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

Glass shattered.

Then another sound.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Chloe screamed.

Marcus grabbed her.

Adrian pulled me behind him.

David shouted from the hallway:

“Clara!”

I ran toward him.

He held up his phone.

“The security system has been breached.”

“How?”

“Someone has administrator access.”

“Who?”

He showed me the screen.

My name.

Marcus's name.

And one more.

ELEANOR VANCE.

My blood went cold.

“She was here.”

David nodded.

“Not just here.”

He pointed to the camera feed.

A woman stood outside the wine cellar.

Elegant.

Calm.

Holding a black handbag.

Eleanor.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

The feed went black.

I whispered:

“She knows.”

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Mom.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

I picked up the security tablet.

“She isn't coming here to help you.”

“Then why?”

I looked toward the basement.

“She's coming for the ledger.”

Adrian's face hardened.

“And if she gets it?”

I held the book tighter.

“Then she gets everything.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Then what?”

He answered quietly:

“She gets the proof that your father never died.”

I froze.

My phone buzzed again.

A final message.

CLARA, IF YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR FATHER ALIVE, COME TO THE WINE CELLAR ALONE.

I stared at the words.

Then looked at the steel door below the house.

The place where my marriage had begun to collapse.

The place where the secrets had been hidden.

The place where everyone seemed to know more about my life than I did.

I slowly closed my hand around the key.

And for the first time...

May you like

I wasn't afraid of what was behind the door.

I was afraid of what would happen when I opened it.
