Chapter 2: The Debt No One Remembered

Daniel arrived carrying nothing but a leather briefcase.

After examining Hannah's injuries, he looked directly at me.

"They made a serious mistake."

Grant believed money could solve everything.

Daniel knew better.

"We're filing for an emergency protection order today."

"What about their threats?" Hannah asked.

Daniel smiled.

"Threats become evidence."

Then he asked me a strange question.

"Do you still keep the old customer books?"

I blinked.

"The notebooks behind the counter?"

"Every one of them."

He laughed.

"I hoped you'd say that."

For twenty-three years, nearly everyone in the neighborhood had eaten at Carter's Table.

Police officers.

City inspectors.

Firefighters.

Teachers.

Judges.

Journalists.

Construction workers.

State senators.

Even governors during election season.

Not because I asked for favors.

Because everyone eventually found their way to my diner.

Daniel looked around the familiar walls.

"Evelyn..."

May you like

"You've spent twenty-three years feeding this city."

"Now it's the city's turn to feed you."
