Chapter 5: Home

Chapter 5: Home
One year later, Carter's Table looked exactly the same.
The neon sign still flickered.
The coffee mugs were still chipped.
The apple cobbler still disappeared before dinner.
Some things never needed changing.
Hannah smiled as she carried fresh cinnamon rolls from the kitchen.
The bruises had faded.
So had the fear in her eyes.
She was no longer surviving.
She was living.
Daniel stopped by for breakfast every Friday.
This time...
He insisted on paying.
One quiet afternoon, Hannah asked,
"Mom..."
"Were you really never scared of them?"
I poured two cups of coffee.
"Oh, sweetheart."
"I was terrified."
She looked surprised.
"Then why did you stand up to them?"
I reached across the table and held her hand.
"Because courage isn't about being fearless."
"It's deciding your child will never have to face that fear alone."
Outside, customers laughed as they walked through the familiar front door of the little diner.
Inside, the smell of fresh bread filled the air.
The Holloways had believed wealth made them untouchable.
They were wrong.
Because money can buy influence.
It can buy silence.
It can even buy fear.
But it can never buy the unconditional love of a mother willing to fight for her child.
And in the end...
May you like
That love was stronger than every mansion, every lawsuit, every threat, and every dollar they possessed.
The End.
