Chapter 3

The Perfect Fiancée’s Secret

The morning after the phone call, I woke up before sunrise.

I had spent years believing I knew how secrets worked.

A secret was usually something hidden.

A forgotten letter.

A locked drawer.

A conversation overheard by accident.

But Vanessa Carter had taught me something different.

The most dangerous secrets were not hidden in darkness.

They were hidden behind perfect smiles.

Daniel had barely slept.

I knew because I heard him walking through the house at three in the morning.

The same footsteps he had as a child whenever something frightened him.

I found him sitting in his father's old study.

The room where Daniel had learned to read.

The room where his father had taught him that a person's character mattered more than their wealth.

"You should sleep," I said.

He looked up.

"How did I not see it?"

I sat across from him.

"Because she wanted you to see something else."

Daniel looked down.

"She was so different with me."

"I know."

"She made me feel like I was finally understood."

His voice cracked.

"After Dad died, I always felt like I had to be strong."

"I thought Vanessa was the first person who saw how tired I was."

I reached across the table and held his hand.

"That is why people like her are dangerous."

"Not because they lie."

"But because they tell you the exact truth you want to hear."

Later that morning, Lucas Bennett arrived with a thick file.

He placed it on my desk.

"I started investigating Vanessa immediately after our conversation."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You investigated her?"

Lucas nodded.

"I investigate anyone who gets close to this family."

Vanessa had not only entered Daniel's life.

She had entered the Whitmore family.

That made her my responsibility.

Lucas opened the file.

"Vanessa Carter was born Vanessa Ellis."

Daniel frowned.

"She changed her name?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Lucas turned a page.

"Because the Ellis name became associated with several financial scandals."

My expression hardened.

"What kind of scandals?"

"Fraud."

"Manipulation."

"False investment schemes."

Daniel stared.

"Her family?"

Lucas nodded.

"Her father was arrested fifteen years ago."

"And her mother?"

Lucas paused.

"Her mother disappeared before the trial."

The room became quiet.

I remembered the woman from the photograph.

The necklace.

The connection.

"Find her mother."

Lucas looked at me.

"We already did."

My stomach tightened.

"And?"

He placed another photograph on the table.

The same woman.

Older.

Different name.

Different identity.

But the same eyes.

"Her name is Sophia Carter."

Lucas looked at me.

"But before she became Sophia Carter..."

"She was Sophia Whitmore."

Daniel stood up.

"What?"

I felt the room spinning.

"No."

Lucas nodded slowly.

"She was your husband's older sister."

The silence afterward felt unreal.

My late husband's sister.

A woman I had never met.

A woman whose existence had never been mentioned.

A woman connected to Vanessa.

"That is impossible."

Lucas shook his head.

"I thought so too."

"Until I found the records."

He explained.

Twenty-five years earlier, Sophia Whitmore had left the family after a bitter dispute.

The official story was that she abandoned the Whitmore name.

But the truth was more complicated.

She believed her younger brother had stolen part of their father's inheritance.

She accused the family of betraying her.

Then she vanished.

Years later, a woman named Sophia Carter appeared.

With a daughter.

Vanessa.

Daniel looked sick.

"So Vanessa..."

"Is my cousin."

Nobody spoke.

The word felt strange.

Impossible.

The woman who planned to marry him had not been a stranger.

She had been connected to his family from the beginning.

But Lucas was not finished.

"There is more."

He opened another folder.

Inside were photographs.

Vanessa as a teenager.

Vanessa attending expensive schools.

Vanessa traveling.

Vanessa living a lifestyle far beyond what her family income could support.

"Who paid for this?" Daniel asked.

Lucas answered:

"Your grandfather's old accounts."

My heart stopped.

"Charles?"

Lucas nodded.

"My husband?"

"Yes."

A terrible thought entered my mind.

What if Vanessa's plan did not begin with Daniel?

What if someone had been preparing this for decades?

I returned to my husband's old documents.

For years, I had kept everything organized.

His letters.

His business records.

His personal notes.

I had never searched them for Sophia.

Because I never knew she existed.

But now...

I looked again.

And I found something.

A sealed envelope.

Hidden behind a false panel in his desk.

The name written on it made my hands shake.

Sophia.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Written twenty years ago.

Sophia,

I know you believe I betrayed you.

But one day, when the truth comes out, you will understand why I made that choice.

I did not take what belonged to you.

I protected what belonged to our family.

But if you ever return, I fear what you will do.

Because you have always believed revenge was the same as justice.

I stopped reading.

Daniel looked at me.

"What does it say?"

I handed him the letter.

His face changed as he read.

Sophia had not simply disappeared.

She had left with anger.

With resentment.

With a reason to hate the Whitmore family.

And she had raised Vanessa.

A girl who had learned that wealth was not earned.

It was taken.

That evening, Vanessa arrived at the mansion.

Unexpectedly.

She walked through the front door wearing the same elegant smile she had always worn.

But this time...

Nobody believed it.

"I need to speak with Daniel."

Daniel stood across from her.

"I don't know if I can trust you."

A flash of anger crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at me.

"I was wrong."

I studied her.

The apology sounded perfect.

Almost too perfect.

"What do you want, Vanessa?"

She looked hurt.

"I want my future back."

Daniel shook his head.

"You mean the future you planned?"

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

The mask slipping.

Then Vanessa did something unexpected.

She laughed.

Not the nervous laugh of someone caught.

The confident laugh of someone who knew something others did not.

"You really think you understand what is happening?"

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Eleanor, you should ask yourself why my mother hated your family."

I said nothing.

She smiled.

"Because your family destroyed hers first."

The room froze.

"What are you talking about?"

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She removed an old photograph.

Placed it on the table.

It showed my late husband.

Standing beside Sophia.

And between them...

A child.

A child I had never seen.

A child whose identity had been hidden.

On the back of the photograph were three words:

The Forgotten Heir.

Vanessa looked at me.

"You think I came here for Daniel's money."

She smiled coldly.

"But I came here to take back what my family lost."

Then she walked away.

Leaving behind the photograph.

And a question that changed everything:

Who was the forgotten heir?

May you like

And why had my husband spent twenty years hiding the truth from me?

To be continued...
