Chapter 8

The Missing Document

The words stayed with me long after the phone call ended.

The daughter you never knew existed.

I had heard the sentence.

I understood every word.

But my mind refused to accept the meaning.

A daughter.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life hidden away.

Daniel watched my face carefully.

"Mom."

I looked at him.

"Who was she talking about?"

I wanted to answer.

I wanted to tell him I knew.

But the truth was...

I did not.

"I don't know."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Another unanswered question.

He was tired of them.

So was I.

Clara remained silent for several moments.

Finally, she spoke.

"There is one document that can answer this."

Lucas immediately looked at her.

"What document?"

"The original family record."

I frowned.

"We already searched the records."

Clara shook her head.

"Not all of them."

She explained.

The Whitmore family had kept a private archive for generations.

Not company records.

Not financial documents.

Family records.

Birth certificates.

Adoption papers.

Private agreements.

Things that were never meant to be seen by outsiders.

After my husband's death, most of the archive was transferred to the family trust.

But one file disappeared.

The most important one.

"The missing document," Lucas said quietly.

Clara nodded.

"The birth registry."

Daniel looked confused.

"Why would a birth registry matter?"

Clara looked at him.

"Because it proves who you are."

I felt my heart tighten.

Daniel's identity.

The thing Vanessa had attacked.

The thing my husband had protected.

The thing everyone seemed willing to destroy.

"Where is this document?"

I asked.

Clara looked toward the old family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

"That is the problem."

"We don't know."

For years, everyone assumed the document had been destroyed.

But Clara believed otherwise.

"Your husband never destroyed evidence."

"He hid things."

"Carefully."

"With purpose."

That night, we searched my husband's study again.

Not for money.

Not for inheritance.

For the truth.

Every drawer.

Every shelf.

Every hidden compartment.

Nothing.

Until Daniel noticed something.

"Mom."

I turned.

He was standing beside his father's old bookshelf.

"Look."

One book was slightly different from the others.

Older.

More damaged.

He pulled it out.

Behind it was a small metal lock.

Inside the compartment was an envelope.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

A single note.

My husband's handwriting.

If this letter is found, then the danger has returned.

The truth must be revealed carefully.

Do not trust anyone who claims they are fighting for justice.

Some people use justice as an excuse for revenge.

Beneath the letter was a small key.

And another message.

The document is where the family began.

Lucas looked at the key.

"Where the family began..."

He thought for a moment.

Then his expression changed.

"The old Whitmore estate."

The original family house.

The place where the Whitmore name started.

The place abandoned after my husband's father died.

Nobody had entered that house in years.

We arrived the next morning.

The old estate stood at the edge of the countryside.

Beautiful.

But empty.

The walls carried memories.

And secrets.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Furniture remained untouched.

Paintings hung on the walls.

The past had been frozen.

We searched for hours.

Nothing.

Until Daniel found something in the basement.

A locked wooden box.

The key from my husband's study fit perfectly.

Inside was not the birth registry.

Only another letter.

This one was addressed to Daniel.

My hands shook as I read it.

My son,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.

I wanted you to grow up without fear.

Without knowing that some people saw you as a doorway to power.

But there is something you must know.

Your birth was never the secret.

The secret was the child who came before you.

Daniel looked at me.

"The child before me?"

Lucas took the letter.

The next line changed everything.

Evan was not the only child connected to the Whitmore inheritance.

There was another.

Everyone became silent.

Another child.

Another hidden heir.

Another missing person.

Then we found the final page.

A list of names.

The first was:

Evan Whitmore.

The second was:

Daniel Whitmore.

The third name had been crossed out.

But underneath the black ink...

A single letter remained.

A.

Daniel whispered:

"A?"

Clara looked terrified.

"No."

"What?"

She stepped closer.

"That cannot be."

I looked at her.

"You know something."

Clara did not answer.

"Clara."

Her face changed.

The confidence disappeared.

"The third child..."

She whispered.

"Was supposed to be impossible."

Before we could ask more, the basement lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then footsteps echoed.

Someone was inside the house.

Someone who knew exactly where we were.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Who is there?"

No answer.

Only the sound of paper moving.

Then a voice.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

"You were never supposed to find that."

The lights came back.

And standing at the entrance of the basement...

Was Vanessa.

She looked different.

No elegant smile.

No perfect appearance.

Only anger.

"You don't understand what you are uncovering."

Daniel stepped forward.

"You knew about this."

Vanessa looked at him.

"Yes."

"All along?"

She nodded.

My voice was cold.

"Why?"

Vanessa looked at the documents.

"Because my mother spent twenty-five years searching for the truth."

"And because your family buried it."

"You are not here for revenge," I said.

Vanessa smiled.

"No."

"I am here because the person who deserves this inheritance is not you."

Daniel stared at her.

"Then who?"

Vanessa looked at the crossed-out name.

The name hidden beneath the ink.

And she said:

"The real heir."

She reached into her bag.

Removed a photograph.

Placed it on the table.

A young woman.

Holding a baby.

A baby wearing the same bracelet we found.

The bracelet engraved with one name.

Evan.

But beneath the photograph was another document.

A document we had been searching for.

The missing birth registry.

And written on the final page...

Was a truth that destroyed everything.

Daniel Whitmore was not born a Whitmore.

Nobody spoke.

Because if the document was real...

Then the entire Whitmore family history was built on a lie.

And Vanessa had not come to steal the inheritance.

May you like

She had come to reveal that it was never ours to begin with.

To be continued...
