CHAPTER 10: The Final Weapon

CHAPTER 10: The Final Weapon
"I'm sorry."
Two words.
Simple.
Ordinary.
Words people say every day.
But after everything Vanessa had done...
Those words carried a weight I could not ignore.
Not because I believed them immediately.
Because I wanted to know if they were real.
Daniel sat across from Vanessa.
His expression was unreadable.
Months ago, he would have reached for her hand.
He would have searched her face for pain.
He would have tried to save her.
But that man was gone.
Not because he had become cold.
Because he had finally learned the difference between love and rescue.
"You asked to meet."
His voice was calm.
"Why?"
Vanessa looked down.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"Because I lost."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
She looked at him.
"I spent my whole life trying not to lose."
A bitter smile appeared.
"And somehow, that became the only thing I knew how to do."
I watched her carefully.
This was not the Vanessa I knew.
The Vanessa I knew always had an answer.
Always had a strategy.
Always knew how to turn a conversation.
But now...
She looked like someone who had finally run out of masks.
"I know you don't believe me."
She looked at me.
"And I understand why."
I did not respond.
Because understanding someone did not mean forgetting what they had done.
"I hurt people."
Her voice cracked.
"I hurt you."
She looked at Daniel.
"I hurt the person who trusted me the most."
Daniel remained silent.
And that silence was harder for Vanessa than anger.
Anger meant emotion.
Silence meant consequences.
"Why?"
Daniel finally asked.
One word.
But it contained months of pain.
"Why did you do it?"
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"When I was young, I learned something."
"What?"
"People only stay when you give them a reason to stay."
I frowned.
"That's not true."
She smiled sadly.
"It was true in my world."
She told us about her childhood.
A father who disappeared when she was nine.
A mother who constantly worried about bills.
A home where promises were often broken.
She learned early that security could vanish overnight.
So she started searching for ways to protect herself.
Control.
Planning.
Information.
Those became her armor.
"When I met Daniel..."
She looked at him.
"I didn't see you at first."
Daniel's face hardened slightly.
"I saw everything around you."
"The money."
"The family."
"The security."
"The life I thought I needed."
A pause.
"Then something happened."
"What?"
"I started actually knowing you."
Daniel looked away.
Because that was the part that hurt the most.
Maybe some feelings had been real.
Maybe not everything was a lie.
And that made it more painful.
"I loved you."
Vanessa whispered.
"I know that doesn't fix anything."
"No."
Daniel answered quietly.
"It doesn't."
She nodded.
"I know."
Then she reached into her bag.
Daniel immediately became cautious.
But she didn't pull out a weapon.
Or another document.
Or another accusation.
She placed a small envelope on the table.
"This is the last thing."
I looked at it.
"What is it?"
Vanessa looked at me.
"Something I should have given you months ago."
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
An old photograph.
His face changed immediately.
Because he recognized the person.
His father.
Michael.
But he did not recognize the location.
Or the person standing beside him.
A woman.
"Who is she?"
Daniel asked.
Vanessa took a breath.
"Her name is Amelia."
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that name.
A name I had not heard in twenty years.
Daniel looked at me.
"Mom?"
I could not answer immediately.
Because Amelia was not just a stranger.
She was connected to the one secret I had never shared.
"Who is she?"
Daniel asked again.
I sat down.
"Your father's old friend."
Vanessa shook her head.
"More than that."
Daniel looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
Vanessa explained.
Before Michael died, he had been investigating Richard's financial crimes.
But Richard was not the only person involved.
There was someone else.
Someone inside the company.
Someone who had access.
Someone who had hidden evidence.
"How do you know this?"
Daniel asked.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
"Because I found the files."
Everyone became silent.
"You were investigating my family."
She nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel's disappointment returned.
But Vanessa continued.
"I found something unexpected."
She placed another document on the table.
"This."
Daniel picked it up.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
"What is this?"
His voice changed.
The color left his face.
I took the paper.
And immediately recognized it.
A private investigation report.
A report I thought had disappeared.
A report about the night Michael died.
"This proves..."
Daniel couldn't finish.
Vanessa looked at him.
"It proves your father's accident may not have been an accident."
Silence.
For years, I had suspected.
But suspicion was not proof.
I had protected Daniel from uncertainty.
But now...
The uncertainty was back.
Only stronger.
"Why didn't you use this against us?"
Daniel asked.
A fair question.
A painful question.
Vanessa looked at him.
"Because by then..."
She swallowed.
"I realized I was becoming exactly the kind of person I hated."
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the first time Vanessa admitted something without trying to gain something.
Then another question came.
The question that changed everything.
"Where did you get this?"
I asked.
Vanessa looked nervous.
"From Richard."
The room froze.
"Richard gave you this?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted me to help him."
Daniel stood.
"Help him do what?"
Vanessa looked at him.
"Destroy your family."
The truth was suddenly much bigger than Vanessa.
Much bigger than the broken engagement.
Much bigger than the lawsuit.
Richard had been playing his own game.
And Vanessa...
Had been one of his pieces.
"What did he ask you to do?"
Daniel demanded.
Vanessa looked at the floor.
"Marry you."
The silence was unbearable.
"He told me once I became part of the family, I would have access."
"Access to what?"
"The company."
"The accounts."
"The trust."
I felt cold.
Because Richard's plan was not revenge.
It was control.
He had found Vanessa because she had the same weakness he understood.
Ambition.
Fear.
The desire for security.
"But I changed my mind."
Vanessa whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
She looked at him.
"Because you were never the thing I wanted to take."
A tear fell.
"You were the person I should have protected."
I wanted to believe that moment was enough.
That regret could erase damage.
But life did not work that way.
Some wounds healed slowly.
Some trust never returned.
Daniel picked up the documents.
"We need to find Richard."
I nodded.
Because now the battle was no longer about Vanessa.
It was about the person who had been hiding behind everything.
But before Vanessa left, she stopped at the door.
"Eleanor."
I looked at her.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
I said nothing.
"I just wanted you to know..."
A pause.
"I was wrong."
After she left, Daniel looked at me.
"What do we do now?"
I looked at the photograph of Michael.
The man who started this entire story.
The man whose truth had waited twenty years to be discovered.
"We find out what happened to your father."
That night, Richard received a message.
Only four words.
They found the evidence.
He stared at the screen.
Then smiled.
Not a scared smile.
Not a worried smile.
A confident one.
Because Richard had survived for twenty years by hiding behind other people.
And he still had one final secret.
A secret that could destroy both Eleanor and Daniel.
