CHAPTER 4: The Woman From Vanessa’s Past

CHAPTER 4: The Woman From Vanessa’s Past
The moment Vanessa walked into my home, I knew something had changed.
Not because of her clothes.
Not because of her expression.
Not because of the way she held Daniel's hand.
It was something smaller.
Something most people would miss.
Confidence.
A few days earlier, Vanessa had been afraid.
She had seen the recorder.
She had realized her perfect image was cracking.
But now?
Now she looked calm.
Prepared.
Which meant one thing.
She had a plan.
"Mom."
Daniel looked at me.
His voice was gentle.
Too gentle.
The voice people used when they were about to deliver news they knew would hurt.
"We need to talk."
I nodded.
"Of course."
Vanessa smiled.
"Thank you for letting us come."
I almost admired her ability to pretend.
Almost.
Because after everything I had learned, that smile no longer looked kind.
It looked rehearsed.
We sat in the living room.
The same room where Vanessa had once complimented my paintings.
The same room where she had held my hand and told me she hoped we would become close.
Now she sat across from me like she was preparing for a negotiation.
Daniel spoke first.
"I think there have been misunderstandings."
I looked at him.
"Misunderstandings?"
Vanessa immediately touched his arm.
"Daniel..."
Her voice softened.
"Maybe this isn't the right time."
There it was.
The performance.
The woman who wanted to appear reasonable.
"I don't want to fight with your mother."
She looked at me.
"I respect her."
I almost smiled.
Because Vanessa always said the right words.
The problem was...
Her actions never matched them.
Daniel took a deep breath.
"I spoke to Vanessa about what happened."
"And?"
He looked uncomfortable.
"She admitted she shouldn't have lost her temper."
I waited.
"But she believes the situation was unfair."
I raised an eyebrow.
"Unfair?"
Vanessa looked down.
"I felt attacked."
I stared at her.
"You threw water on me."
She looked hurt.
"I thought you were trying to make me look bad."
The accusation was subtle.
Beautifully delivered.
She wasn't denying what she did.
She was changing the reason.
Making herself the victim.
Before I could respond, the doorbell rang.
Everyone looked toward the entrance.
I had not expected anyone else.
Daniel frowned.
"Are you expecting someone?"
"No."
The house manager opened the door.
A woman stood outside.
She looked nervous.
But determined.
She was probably in her early thirties.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
And a face that looked like someone who had carried a secret for too long.
"Mrs. Whitmore?"
I stood.
"Yes?"
"My name is Claire Bennett."
Vanessa went completely still.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Daniel looked confused.
"Who is she?"
Claire looked at Vanessa.
"I think she knows."
Vanessa stood immediately.
"Daniel, don't listen to her."
Too fast.
Too desperate.
And Daniel noticed.
"What is going on?"
Claire stepped inside.
"I used to be engaged to Vanessa."
Silence.
The room changed instantly.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Is that true?"
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Finally:
"Yes."
A small answer.
A controlled answer.
But it was too late.
Because the question was no longer whether Claire knew Vanessa.
The question was what Claire knew.
Claire sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
"I didn't want to come here."
She looked at me.
"But when I heard about Daniel..."
She paused.
"I remembered what happened to me."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"What happened?"
Claire looked at Vanessa.
"She changed."
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Oh, here we go."
Claire ignored her.
"At first, she was everything I wanted."
She looked at Daniel.
"That's how she works."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means she becomes the person you need."
The room became quiet.
"She learns your fears."
"Your weaknesses."
"Your dreams."
"And then she uses them."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Are you finished?"
Claire looked at her.
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"Because someone needs to tell Daniel the truth."
Daniel stood.
"Tell me."
Claire took a breath.
"Vanessa didn't choose you because she loved you."
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"That's a lie."
Claire continued.
"She chose you because she researched you."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"Your family."
"Your mother's foundation."
"Your inheritance."
"Your business."
Everything became silent.
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you know about my family before we met?"
Vanessa didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
"Vanessa."
Her eyes softened.
"Daniel, everyone knows who your mother is."
"That isn't what I asked."
A pause.
"Did you look into me?"
Vanessa sighed.
"I was curious."
Claire shook her head.
"She wasn't curious."
She looked at Daniel.
"She was calculating."
Vanessa stood.
"I cannot believe this."
She looked at Daniel.
"You're letting strangers attack me."
Daniel looked lost.
"No one is attacking you."
"Yes, they are."
She pointed at Claire.
"Someone from my past."
Then at me.
"Your mother who never wanted me."
A tear appeared.
Perfect timing.
Perfect expression.
"I am the only person in this room who has done nothing wrong."
I watched Daniel.
And I saw something.
He wanted to believe her.
Because believing her was easier.
Then Claire pulled out a phone.
"I recorded something."
Vanessa's expression changed.
"What?"
Claire pressed play.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then Vanessa's voice.
Clear.
Cold.
Confident.
A voice Daniel had never heard.
The recording was from months earlier.
Before their engagement.
Vanessa was speaking to someone.
"I don't need forever."
A man's voice asked:
"Then what do you need?"
Vanessa laughed.
"Security."
Daniel's face changed.
The recording continued.
"Once I marry him, everything becomes simple."
A pause.
"People like Daniel don't understand power."
"They think love means trust."
"They don't realize trust is the easiest thing to use against someone."
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa looked at Claire with pure hatred.
"You recorded me?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"I recorded myself."
A pause.
"Because I was afraid I would forget how you made me feel."
Daniel sat down slowly.
The color had disappeared from his face.
"Vanessa..."
She immediately moved toward him.
"Daniel, listen to me."
But he stepped back.
A small movement.
A painful movement.
But I saw it.
The first crack.
Vanessa looked around the room.
Then she looked at me.
And for the first time...
She stopped pretending.
Her eyes became cold.
"This is not over."
Nobody answered.
She picked up her purse.
Walked toward the door.
Then stopped beside Daniel.
"I hope you enjoy destroying the one person who actually loved you."
Daniel looked at her.
But he said nothing.
Because for the first time...
He was not looking at the woman he loved.
He was looking at the woman behind the smile.
After Vanessa left, nobody moved.
Claire quietly stood.
"I should go."
I stopped her.
"No."
She looked surprised.
"You did the right thing."
Claire smiled sadly.
"I wish someone had done it for me sooner."
Then she left.
That night, Daniel stayed.
For the first time in days, he sat with me without defending Vanessa.
He looked exhausted.
"Mom."
"Yes?"
"How could I not see it?"
I looked at my son.
Because there was no answer that would not hurt.
"Because you wanted to believe the best about her."
He looked down.
"I loved her."
"I know."
A pause.
"And love isn't something to be ashamed of."
But I knew something Daniel didn't.
The truth had only started coming out.
Because Claire had revealed Vanessa's methods.
But she had not revealed Vanessa's entire plan.
The next morning, Rosa discovered something hidden inside Vanessa's old belongings.
Something that proved Vanessa had been preparing for this marriage long before Daniel ever knew her name.
And when Daniel saw it...
He would finally understand.
He had never been the one choosing Vanessa.
Vanessa had been choosing him.
