Chapter 2: The Promise She Never Stopped Keeping

Chapter 2: The Promise She Never Stopped Keeping

The day I left Noah on that busy street, I didn't disappear because I didn't love him.

I disappeared because I loved him more than myself.

For months, we had been sleeping in my car after I lost my apartment. Every shelter was full. Every job I found lasted only days before I had to miss work because I had no one to watch him.

That morning, Noah woke up smiling.

"Are we having pancakes today?"

I lied.

"Soon, sweetheart."

Instead, I walked him to a family resource center downtown. Across the street, volunteers served meals to struggling families every afternoon. I had spent weeks watching them from a distance, praying someone kind would notice him.

I tucked a letter inside his backpack.

My son's name is Noah. He is healthy, kind, and loves dinosaurs. I am not abandoning him because I don't love him. I am leaving because I have failed him. Please tell him every day that his mother loved him more than anything.

I kissed his forehead.

"Mommy will be back."

Then I crossed the street.

I hid behind a bus stop, crying so hard I could barely breathe.

Within minutes, one of the volunteers noticed Noah sitting alone.

She knelt beside him.

"Where's your mommy?"

He pointed toward the crowd.

"She said she'd come back."

I nearly ran to him.

But then I remembered the empty refrigerator, the freezing nights in the car, and the eviction notice folded inside my pocket.

I turned away before he could see me.

It broke me forever.
