Chapter 3: Twenty Years Later

Chapter 3: Twenty Years Later

Twenty years passed.

Not a single birthday went by without me wondering where Noah was.

I never had another child.

I never married.

Every year on his birthday, I bought a small cupcake, lit one candle, and whispered, "Happy birthday, my little boy."

Then one rainy Tuesday evening, someone knocked on my apartment door.

I almost ignored it.

When I opened the door, a tall young man stood there holding an old, faded teddy bear.

Its left ear had been stitched twice.

I recognized it instantly.

"Noah..."

His eyes filled with tears.

"You kept your promise."

I shook my head.

"No... I didn't."

He smiled gently.

"You promised you loved me."

He pulled an old, yellowed letter from his jacket.

The same letter I had left inside his backpack.

"I've read this hundreds of times."

My knees gave way.

He caught me before I fell.

For the first time in twenty years...

I hugged my son.

Ending

Over coffee, Noah told me everything.

The volunteer who found him had contacted child protective services.

He was eventually adopted by a loving couple who knew about my letter.

They never spoke badly about me.

Instead, every birthday they handed him the letter again.

His adoptive mother would always say,

"Your first mom made the hardest choice of her life because she wanted you to have one."

After his adoptive parents passed away, Noah began searching for me.

It took him six years.

He found me through an old hospital employment record and a charity where I volunteered.

Before leaving that evening, he placed the teddy bear on my couch.

"I think he's finally home," he said.

Tears streamed down my face.

"So are you?"

He smiled.

"I've always had two mothers."

He reached across the table and held my hand.

"But now... I finally have both."

Sometimes love doesn't look like holding on.

Sometimes love is letting go so someone else can save the person you love most.

And sometimes, after years of heartbreak, life quietly gives you one more chance to say the words you never stopped carrying in your heart.

"I never stopped loving you."

"I know," Noah replied.

May you like

"I never stopped waiting."

The End.
