Chapter 2 — The Call Mason Never Expected

The room fell silent after the call ended.

Mason slowly set his whiskey glass on the dresser.

"You've always been dramatic, Sophia," he said with a mocking smile. "Now you've found a husband who enjoys fairy tales."

Sophia instinctively stepped behind me.

I could feel her trembling.

Not because she was weak.

Because fear had been trained into her for years.

A knock echoed through the bedroom door.

Three sharp knocks.

Karen Ellis entered first.

She wasn't a family friend.

She was the senior attorney for my family's foundation—and a former federal prosecutor.

Behind her came two uniformed police officers.

Mason frowned.

"What is this?"

Karen calmly held up a folder.

"This afternoon, before the ceremony, Sophia signed authorization for us to release evidence she had entrusted to our office."

Sophia looked at me in surprise.

"You knew?"

I squeezed her hand.

"I knew there was something you weren't ready to tell me."

"I didn't know it was this."

Karen opened the folder.

"There are medical reports dating back eleven years."

"Hospital photographs."

"Therapy records."

"Financial documents."

"And a sworn statement prepared months ago."

Mason's smile vanished.

"You can't prove anything."

Karen met his eyes.

May you like

"We don't need to."

"Your own records already do."
