Chapter 14 – The Betrayal Network

Chapter 14 – The Betrayal Network
Betrayal rarely begins with hatred.
It begins with trust.
A handshake.
A promise.
A favor.
A person who says, "I am doing this for you."
And by the time you realize the truth...
The knife is already inside.
The alarms continued screaming through the Vale Foundation underground facility.
Red lights flashed across the control room.
Thousands of screens displayed the same message.
ORION OVERRIDE ACCEPTED.
Everyone stood frozen.
My father.
Marcus.
Me.
Because we all understood the same terrifying truth.
Someone had broken through the highest security system ever created.
Edward stepped closer to the main console.
His face had changed.
The confidence was gone.
For the first time in my life, I saw fear in my father's eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear of what he had created.
"Who has access?"
I asked.
Edward typed rapidly.
The screens shifted.
Security layers disappeared one by one.
"No."
He whispered.
"What?"
He stared at the data.
"It is impossible."
I moved beside him.
"Nothing is impossible."
He looked at me.
"This access code belonged to someone who died twelve years ago."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
Edward did not answer immediately.
Then he said:
"Dr. Eleanor Vance."
My mother.
The room went silent.
"No."
My voice was barely a whisper.
"My mother is dead."
Edward looked at me.
"Yes."
"Then how?"
He had no answer.
And that was the first time I realized something.
My father, the man who planned everything, did not know everything.
The screens changed again.
A video appeared.
A woman sat in darkness.
Her face hidden.
Her voice distorted.
"Hello, Edward."
My father stepped back.
The voice continued.
"You always believed you were the smartest person in the room."
A pause.
"That was your greatest weakness."
The woman turned slightly.
The light revealed part of her face.
Not enough.
Just enough.
My father's expression collapsed.
"Impossible."
I looked at him.
"Who is she?"
He whispered:
"Someone I thought I destroyed."
The video continued.
"Edward created Orion."
"Eleanor tried to stop it."
"Victoria tried to control it."
"But none of you understood the truth."
The woman leaned forward.
"Orion was never about predicting human behavior."
A pause.
"It was about creating it."
My blood ran cold.
The system was not designed to understand choices.
It was designed to influence them.
Marcus looked at the data.
His face became pale.
"Evelyn..."
"What?"
"The network."
He pointed at the screen.
It wasn't only government agencies.
It wasn't only corporations.
The network stretched across industries.
Politics.
Media.
Security.
Technology.
Thousands of people.
Controlled by invisible pressure.
Betrayal wasn't an accident.
It was a system.
Edward walked away from the console.
"I was wrong."
Those words shocked me more than anything.
My father never admitted mistakes.
Never.
"You created this."
I said.
He nodded.
"Yes."
"You hurt people."
"Yes."
"You destroyed our family."
His eyes lowered.
"Yes."
I expected excuses.
I expected him to defend himself.
Instead, he simply said:
"I know."
Then the doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Victoria walked in.
Not Vanessa.
Not the woman from my home.
Victoria Sloane.
She looked exhausted.
"Stop fighting each other."
She said.
My anger immediately returned.
"You have some nerve."
She looked at Lily's photograph in my hand.
"I know."
"You destroyed my family."
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Why are you here?"
Her answer surprised everyone.
"Because the person controlling Orion is the reason your family fell apart."
I looked at her.
"Who?"
Victoria looked toward the screen.
"The architect."
The video screen flickered.
The hidden woman's voice returned.
"You always blamed each other."
"Edward blamed Eleanor."
"Eleanor blamed herself."
"Victoria blamed Edward."
"Evelyn blamed everyone."
A pause.
"But none of you looked upward."
The screen displayed a symbol.
A circle.
Inside it, a single letter.
A
My father stared.
"Alexandra."
I looked at him.
"Who is Alexandra?"
His silence answered before his words did.
"The person who funded Orion before anyone else."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I thought she was dead."
Suddenly, every device in the room activated.
Phones.
Computers.
Security panels.
A message appeared.
TO EVELYN VANCE:
YOU WERE ALWAYS THE FINAL VARIABLE.
My heart stopped.
A second message followed.
YOUR FATHER BUILT THE MACHINE.
YOUR MOTHER TRIED TO DESTROY IT.
VICTORIA TRIED TO OWN IT.
BUT YOU...
The final line appeared.
YOU WILL DECIDE WHETHER HUMANITY DESERVES FREEDOM.
I stared at the screen.
Because I finally understood.
This was never a battle over technology.
It was a battle over belief.
Should humanity be protected from itself?
Or should humanity remain free, even if freedom meant chaos?
My father looked at me.
Victoria looked at me.
Marcus looked at me.
Everyone was waiting.
But I wasn't ready to answer.
Because somewhere far away...
A woman named Alexandra was watching.
And she knew something none of them knew.
The final operation had not started.
May you like
It had already begun.
