Chapter 8 – The Enemy Inside

Chapter 8 – The Enemy Inside
The most dangerous enemies are not the ones standing across from you.
They are the ones standing beside you.
The ones who know your name.
Your habits.
Your weaknesses.
The ones who know exactly where to place the knife.
I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.
My mother.
Dr. Eleanor Vance.
Sitting at the center of a classified meeting room.
Surrounded by people who created Project Orion.
A program I believed had disappeared years ago.
A program I believed had been shut down.
A program now connected to my daughter's suffering.
I wanted to believe there was another explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A forged image.
A manipulation.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting something much harder.
My mother had secrets.
And those secrets had reached my daughter.
At 5:00 a.m., I contacted Marcus.
"Trace the photograph."
A few seconds passed.
"Already did."
"And?"
His voice became quieter.
"It is authentic."
I closed my eyes.
"Date?"
"Fourteen years ago."
Fourteen years.
Before Lily.
Before Grant.
Before Vanessa.
Project Orion had existed long before my family fell apart.
"Who else was in the room?"
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
"Marcus."
"One person."
"Who?"
The answer came.
"Director Adrian Cross."
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Adrian Cross.
My mentor.
The man who recruited me.
The man who taught me how to survive intelligence operations.
The man who once told me:
"Trust is a weapon. Use it carefully."
Now I wondered if he had been teaching me because he cared.
Or because he was preparing me.
I returned to my agency headquarters under a false identity.
I could not walk in as Director Evelyn Vance.
Not anymore.
If someone inside the organization was involved...
Everyone was a potential threat.
The building looked exactly the same.
Glass walls.
Security checkpoints.
Employees moving through the halls.
A place I once considered home.
Now it felt like enemy territory.
I entered the old archives.
The section where retired operations were stored.
Project Orion files should have been locked away.
Instead...
They were missing.
Not deleted.
Removed.
Someone with authority had physically taken them.
I checked the access logs.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Adrian Cross.
My mentor.
I stood there for a long time.
Not because I was surprised.
Because I was disappointed.
There are many kinds of betrayal.
A stranger betraying you is painful.
Someone you love betraying you is devastating.
But someone who helped create who you are...
That changes you.
I found Adrian in his office.
He was exactly as I remembered.
Gray hair.
Calm expression.
Perfect suit.
He looked like a professor.
Not a man who could destroy lives.
He smiled when he saw me.
"Evelyn."
No surprise.
No fear.
Almost like he expected me.
"Did you know I was coming?"
He poured coffee.
"I always know when my best student returns."
I sat across from him.
"Why did you access Project Orion?"
Silence.
A small one.
But enough.
"I wondered when you would discover it."
Not denial.
Confirmation.
"Why is my daughter in those files?"
For the first time...
Adrian looked uncomfortable.
"Lily was never supposed to be involved."
My anger rose.
"She was five years old."
"I know."
"She was watched."
"I know."
"She was manipulated."
His silence answered.
I stood.
"What did you do?"
Adrian looked at me.
And for a moment...
I saw the man who trained me.
Not the enemy.
"We created Orion to identify threats."
He said.
"Not enemies. Threats."
I stared.
"What does that mean?"
"It means we studied people."
"Everyone?"
"Everyone important."
My voice became cold.
"You studied me."
A pause.
"Yes."
"Grant?"
"Yes."
"Vanessa?"
"Yes."
"And Lily?"
His eyes lowered.
"Yes."
The room went silent.
"You turned my family into an experiment."
"No."
His voice became stronger.
"We identified a risk."
"A risk?"
"Grant Carlisle was financially unstable. Emotionally vulnerable. Easily influenced."
"By Vanessa."
"Yes."
I understood.
Project Orion had predicted everything.
Grant's collapse.
Vanessa's arrival.
The manipulation.
But they did nothing.
"Why?"
Adrian looked away.
"Because we wanted to observe the outcome."
I felt something inside me break.
"You watched."
"We needed data."
"You watched my daughter suffer."
Silence.
That was the answer.
I stepped closer.
"Then you are no different from them."
Adrian looked at me.
"You think I don't know that?"
That surprised me.
For the first time...
He looked tired.
"Project Orion was supposed to protect people."
He whispered.
"But somewhere along the way, we stopped protecting people."
I studied him.
"Who changed it?"
His expression hardened.
"Not who."
"What then?"
"The person who controls the funding."
My eyes narrowed.
"Who funds Orion?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then said:
"The Vale Foundation."
Everything connected.
Vanessa.
Grant.
My mother's research.
Project Orion.
But there was still one missing piece.
"My mother."
I said.
Adrian looked at me.
"Your mother knew."
"About Vanessa?"
"No."
His voice lowered.
"About what Orion would become."
I froze.
"She tried to stop it."
I stared at him.
"Then why did she die?"
Adrian looked toward the window.
"Because she found out who was really in control."
The answer came before he said it.
Someone above Vanessa.
Someone above Grant.
Someone above Project Orion.
"Who?"
Adrian looked directly at me.
"The person who inherited your mother's work."
A long silence followed.
"Who inherited it?"
His answer was barely a whisper.
"Evelyn..."
My name sounded different.
Like a warning.
"Your mother didn't leave Project Orion."
"She was removed."
The room became colder.
"By who?"
Adrian opened a locked drawer.
Inside was an old photograph.
He placed it on the desk.
A woman stood beside my mother.
A woman I recognized instantly.
Vanessa Vale.
But she was younger.
Much younger.
And standing behind them...
Was someone else.
Someone I never expected.
My father.
I stared at the photograph.
The world I knew began collapsing.
Because the enemy was not only inside my agency.
May you like
It was inside my bloodline.
