Chapter 2: The Voice That Changed Everything

"Daddy, can I finish my drawing before dinner?"

The small voice floated down the hallway.

Chad looked past Olivia's shoulder.

A little boy, about six years old, ran into the foyer carrying a box of crayons.

He stopped when he saw the stranger at the door.

"Mom?"

Olivia smiled gently.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

The boy wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Who's that?"

Olivia looked directly at Chad.

"This is Noah."

Chad's lips parted.

"Our..."

"Yes."

She didn't let him finish.

"Your son."

The world seemed to stop.

Chad stared at the child he had never held.

The child whose first steps, first words, first birthday, and first day of school he had chosen to miss.

Tears filled his eyes.

"He looks like me."

Olivia answered quietly.

"He smiles like you."

Noah looked up curiously.

"Mom, why is he crying?"

She knelt beside her son.

"Because sometimes grown-ups realize they've made choices they can't undo."

Chad took one hesitant step forward.

"May I..."

Noah instinctively hid behind Olivia.

The hesitation lasted only a second.

But it was enough.

Chad finally understood what abandonment costs.

Not money.

Not pride.

May you like

Time.

And no apology could ever return the years he had thrown away.
