One year later, Carter's Table had become more than a neighborhood diner.
Every Sunday evening, the back room hosted free legal information sessions and support groups for survivors of domestic abuse.
The sign outside still flickered in the wind.
The coffee mugs were still chipped.
The apple cobbler still sold out before closing.
A reporter once asked Evelyn,
"Were you trying to destroy the Holloways?"
She smiled while wiping flour from her hands.
"No."
"I was trying to save my daughter."
Outside, Hannah hugged her mother.
The scars hadn't disappeared.
Some never would.
But they no longer defined her future.
As customers filled the little diner with laughter and conversation, Evelyn looked around the room she had built one meal at a time.
Grant believed power came from money.
Margaret believed it came from status.
They were both wrong.
