Carter's Table smelled exactly as it always had.

Fresh coffee.

Warm bread.

Apple pie cooling by the window.

Regular customers immediately noticed Hannah's bruised face.

No one asked questions.

Instead, old Mr. Jenkins quietly locked the front door.

Another customer handed Evelyn a business card.

"My daughter is a trauma counselor."

"She'll come tonight."
