CHAPTER 2 — THE NURSE WHO REFUSED TO LOOK AWAY

CHAPTER 2 — THE NURSE WHO REFUSED TO LOOK AWAY

My mother's breathing slowly became steadier.

I pressed the call button again and again until the room filled with nurses.

One of them gently guided me aside.

Another checked my mother's oxygen levels.

Marissa stood near the window, arms folded.

"I told you," she insisted.

"I was helping her."

The charge nurse looked at the pillow lying on the floor.

Then at the red marks around my mother's nose and mouth.

Her expression changed.

"I'm calling hospital security."

Marissa laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

"It's all a misunderstanding."

Just then, my mother reached for my hand.

Her fingers trembled.

With great effort, she whispered only three words.

"Lock... the... door."

The room fell silent.

The nurse immediately understood.

She stepped outside and returned with two security officers.

"No visitors," she instructed.

"Not until the physician and police have completed their assessment."

May you like

For the first time since I had entered Room 218...

Marissa looked afraid.
