CHAPTER 3 — THE RECORDINGS NO ONE KNEW EXISTED
Later that afternoon, the attending physician asked to speak with me privately.
"There have been concerns," she said carefully.
"What kind of concerns?"
She opened my mother's chart.
"Your mother repeatedly told staff she was frightened when your wife visited."
My heart sank.
"Why wasn't I told?"
"We documented her statements."
"But she later became too frightened to repeat them."
Then the head of hospital security arrived carrying a tablet.
"Mr. Hale..."
"Our intensive care corridor is monitored."
He played the footage.
It showed Marissa entering my mother's room several times while no staff were present.
On more than one occasion, she closed the privacy curtain before approaching the bed.
No single clip proved a crime by itself.
But together...
They showed a troubling pattern that required investigation.
The detective assigned to the case watched quietly.
"We'll need to continue looking into what happened."
I turned toward the screen.
I wasn't just seeing surveillance footage.
I was seeing all the moments I had dismissed.
The arguments.
The insults.
The fear in my mother's eyes.
May you like
I had mistaken silence for peace.
It had been fear.
