Chapter 1: The Man He Never Expected

Chapter 1: The Man He Never Expected

The silence that followed was heavier than every scream that had filled the mansion only moments before.

My father stood in the doorway without saying a word. His sharp eyes swept across the room, taking in every detail—the bruise forming on my cheek, my trembling hands protecting my unborn son, the shattered crystal glass beside the staircase, and Santiago standing only a few feet away with his fist still clenched.

"Valeria."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I had heard that voice only once before—when a rival company had attempted to destroy Grupo Salazar with fraud. Within three months, the company no longer existed.

I knew what that tone meant.

Santiago straightened his shirt and forced a smile.

"Mr. Salazar... this is a misunderstanding."

My father ignored him.

Instead, he walked directly toward me.

His eyes softened as he gently touched my face.

"My little girl," he whispered. "I'm sorry I didn't come sooner."

For the first time in months, I allowed myself to cry.

"I'm sorry, Dad."

"You have nothing to apologize for."

One of the attorneys stepped forward.

"Mr. and Mrs. Rivas," he announced, "everything that has happened inside this residence tonight has been recorded and livestreamed. Copies have already been delivered to the authorities, the district prosecutor, and multiple secure servers."

The color drained from Beatriz's face.

"What?"

The attorney continued.

"We also possess evidence of forged psychiatric evaluations, conspiracy to commit unlawful confinement, attempted custody fraud, financial coercion, and repeated domestic violence."

Santiago laughed nervously.

"You have no proof."

My father's second attorney calmly placed a tablet on the marble table.

The video began playing.

Everyone watched in complete silence as Santiago threatened me...

As he raised his hand...

As Beatriz reminded him not to leave visible bruises...

Every word echoed through the enormous foyer.

When the recording ended, even the security guards looked disgusted.

My father finally turned toward Santiago.

"You built your empire on fear."

He took one slow step closer.

"I built mine on justice."

Outside, police vehicles stopped in front of the mansion.

Blue and red lights reflected through the enormous windows.

Santiago looked toward the entrance.

His confidence disappeared.

"You called the police?"

"No," my father answered.

"My daughter did."

Within minutes, detectives entered with warrants already signed.

Santiago reached for my arm.

"You can't do this!"

One of the officers immediately restrained him.

"You are under arrest."

Beatriz attempted to flee through the back hallway.

She didn't get far.

Another team was already waiting.

As both of them were escorted away in handcuffs, Santiago looked back at me.

"You ruined everything!"

I gently rested my hand over my belly.

"No."

"You did."

For the first time since marrying him...

I watched him leave without fear.
