Chapter 2: The Child Who Remembered

The ballroom fell into complete silence.

No cameras flashed.

No one spoke.

The lawyer walked slowly toward Ava, holding the red folder with both hands.

"My name is Thomas Bennett," he said.

"I was appointed by the court to review irregularities in the Whitmore adoption."

Cassandra forced a laugh.

"This is absurd."

"The child's biological mother died during childbirth."

Thomas opened the file.

"No."

"Someone wanted the world to believe she did."

He removed a hospital bracelet.

The faded plastic carried one name.

Ava Morgan.

Ava's knees weakened.

"I wore that..."

She touched it with trembling fingers.

"The nurses told me my daughter didn't survive."

Thomas nodded sadly.

"They lied."

Across the room, Lily tightened her arms around Ava's neck.

"I told you," the little girl whispered.

"My heart knew you."

Grant Whitmore slowly turned toward his wife.

May you like

"Cassandra..."

"What have you done?"
