Chapter 12 — The Man Behind Adrian

Chapter 12 — The Man Behind Adrian
The woman on the medical bed opened her eyes.
Lydia stared at her.
For one impossible second, she saw her mother.
Then she saw herself.
The same dark eyes.
The same sharp cheekbones.
The same small scar above the left eyebrow.
But there was something colder in this woman's face.
Something trained.
Something deliberately empty.
Charles stood beside her.
“My son,” he said, looking at Adrian, “you've spent your entire life believing you were the center of this family.”
Adrian didn't answer.
Charles smiled.
“You were never the center.”
He pointed toward the woman.
“She was.”
Lydia stepped closer.
“Who is she?”
Evelyn's voice came from behind them.
“Her name is Elena.”
Lydia turned.
“You had another daughter.”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
Lydia laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Evelyn looked devastated.
“I know.”
Charles interrupted.
“Enough.”
He turned toward Lydia.
“You want answers.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop pretending you can survive the truth.”
Lydia stared at him.
“I've survived you for six years.”
Charles's expression hardened.
“Because I allowed you to.”
The Man Behind Adrian
Adrian stepped forward.
“You arranged my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“You arranged my career.”
“Yes.”
“You controlled my finances.”
“Yes.”
“You erased Clara.”
“Yes.”
“You lied about my mother.”
“Yes.”
Adrian's voice cracked.
“Why?”
Charles looked at him with almost paternal affection.
“Because you were weak.”
Adrian froze.
“You were born intelligent. Ambitious. But you lacked the cruelty required to inherit my empire.”
“So you destroyed me.”
“I shaped you.”
“You destroyed everyone around me.”
Charles shook his head.
“No. I gave them opportunities to reveal themselves.”
Adrian laughed.
“You poisoned my marriage.”
“I introduced you to Lydia.”
“You manipulated us.”
“I gave you six years together.”
“You made me hurt her.”
Charles looked at Lydia.
“That part was yours.”
Adrian went silent.
The words hurt because they were true.
Charles had manipulated him.
But Adrian had still chosen to believe the lies.
He had still changed Lydia's locks.
He had still cut off her bank accounts.
He had still allowed Bianca to humiliate her.
He had still signed documents without reading them.
Charles had built the cage.
Adrian had helped lock the door.
Lydia turned toward him.
“You knew something was wrong.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before our wedding.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I thought I could handle it.”
She stared.
“You thought you could handle my life.”
“No.”
“You thought you could protect me by controlling me.”
“I was wrong.”
Lydia's voice trembled.
“You didn't protect me.”
Adrian lowered his head.
“I know.”
“You isolated me.”
“I know.”
“You made me believe my brother hated me.”
“I know.”
“You made me believe I had no one.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
Lydia turned away.
Charles smiled.
“See?”
He looked at Adrian.
“This is why you were never strong enough.”
Adrian suddenly looked at him.
“No.”
Charles frowned.
Adrian continued.
“You were wrong.”
“What?”
“I wasn't weak because I loved her.”
He stepped toward his father.
“I was weak because I believed you.”
Charles's expression changed.
“And now?”
Adrian looked at Lydia.
“Now I know who I am.”
Elena
The woman on the bed slowly sat up.
Lydia approached.
“Are you really my sister?”
Elena nodded.
“Yes.”
“How old are you?”
“Twenty-four.”
Lydia's breath caught.
Only one year younger than Adrian.
“You were born before me.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because Mother was afraid.”
Lydia looked at Evelyn.
“Afraid of Charles?”
Elena laughed quietly.
“No.”
She looked at Charles.
“She was afraid of what I would become.”
Lydia frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Elena stood.
She was wearing a plain gray hospital gown.
There were scars along her arms.
Small circular marks.
Injection sites.
Lydia stared.
“What did they do to you?”
Elena looked down.
“Experiments.”
Charles didn't deny it.
“She was the first successful subject.”
Lydia's stomach turned.
“Subject?”
Elena looked at her.
“Northstar isn't just genetic.”
“What is it?”
“A biological interface.”
She touched her chest.
“They taught my cells to store energy differently.”
Lydia shook her head.
“That sounds impossible.”
“It did to me too.”
Elena looked at Charles.
“Until he made it real.”
Charles walked toward the operating table.
“Northstar was never designed to create wealth.”
Benjamin frowned.
“Then what was it designed for?”
Charles looked at him.
“Survival.”
“Survival from what?”
“The coming collapse.”
Everyone went silent.
Charles continued.
“Energy systems are failing. Food chains are destabilizing. Governments are preparing for shortages they refuse to acknowledge.”
Lydia shook her head.
“That doesn't justify what you did.”
“No.”
Charles's voice became quieter.
“But it explains it.”
He looked toward Elena.
“She was designed to survive the world that comes next.”
Lydia stared at her sister.
“And my daughter?”
Charles smiled.
“She is the final generation.”
Benjamin stepped forward.
“You've committed kidnapping, fraud, medical abuse, and attempted murder.”
Charles laughed.
“You still think this is a courtroom.”
“No.”
Benjamin looked toward the cameras.
“It will be.”
Charles frowned.
Benjamin held up a small device.
“A live transmission.”
Charles's face changed.
“You wouldn't.”
“I already did.”
For the first time, Charles looked afraid.
Benjamin continued.
“Everything you've said has been transmitted to federal investigators.”
Charles turned toward the security team.
“Shut it down.”
No one moved.
The guards looked at one another.
Then one lowered his weapon.
“I'm sorry, sir.”
Charles stared.
“Who gave you permission?”
The guard answered:
“No one.”
He removed his earpiece.
“We're done.”
One by one, the others followed.
Charles looked at Adrian.
“You did this.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward Lydia.
“She did.”
The Real Betrayal
Evelyn suddenly collapsed.
Lydia rushed toward her.
“Mom!”
Evelyn grabbed her hand.
“Listen.”
Lydia knelt.
“I've been trying to stop him for eighteen years.”
“I know.”
“I couldn't.”
“You're here now.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not because I escaped.”
Lydia frowned.
“What?”
Evelyn looked at Charles.
“He let me.”
Lydia froze.
Charles smiled.
“Finally.”
Adrian turned toward his father.
“What?”
Charles answered calmly.
“She was never my prisoner.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“She was my partner.”
Silence.
Lydia stared at her mother.
“No.”
Evelyn whispered:
“I helped create Northstar.”
Lydia stepped backward.
“You…”
“I helped your grandfather.”
“And Charles.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I believed I could control what we created.”
Charles smiled.
“You always thought you were smarter than me.”
“I was.”
“Until you met your daughters.”
Evelyn's face fell.
Charles continued.
“That's when you realized what Northstar really required.”
Lydia looked at her mother.
“What?”
Evelyn couldn't answer.
Charles did.
“Three generations.”
He pointed to Elena.
“The first generation learned survival.”
He pointed to Lydia.
“The second carried resistance.”
Then he looked toward Lydia's stomach.
“And the third will carry both.”
Lydia's hand covered her belly.
“No.”
Charles smiled.
“Yes.”
Adrian's Choice
Adrian stepped between Charles and Lydia.
“No.”
Charles looked at him.
“You still don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“You will lose everything.”
“I already lost everything.”
Charles frowned.
Adrian looked toward Lydia.
“Except the chance to become someone better.”
Charles's face hardened.
“You're choosing her over your family.”
Adrian answered:
“She is my family.”
Charles stared.
Then he pulled a gun.
Everyone froze.
Lydia gasped.
Adrian didn't move.
Charles pointed it at his own son.
“You were always disappointing.”
Adrian looked at him.
“I know.”
The gun fired.
A scream filled the room.
But Adrian remained standing.
The bullet had struck the wall beside him.
Benjamin had tackled Charles's arm at the last second.
Security rushed forward.
Charles was forced to the floor.
He fought like a man half his age.
“You can't stop this!”
Benjamin restrained him.
“It ends tonight.”
Charles laughed.
“No.”
He looked toward Lydia.
“Because she already has the marker.”
Lydia froze.
“What marker?”
Charles smiled.
“The one that activates at birth.”
Evelyn's face turned white.
“No.”
Charles looked at her.
“You never told her?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“What happens at birth?”
Charles smiled.
“Ask your mother.”
Lydia turned.
“Mom?”
Evelyn began crying.
“Lydia…”
“What happens?”
Evelyn whispered:
“If the marker activates incorrectly…”
She stopped.
Lydia's voice broke.
“What?”
“Your daughter could die.”
Silence.
Charles smiled from the floor.
“And only one person knows how to prevent it.”
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian's face hardened.
“You.”
Charles nodded.
“Yes.”
Then the doors burst open.
Federal agents stormed inside.
Weapons raised.
“Charles Caldwell!”
He was dragged to his feet.
As they led him away, he looked at Lydia.
“You'll come to me.”
Lydia shook her head.
“No.”
Charles smiled.
“You will.”
He disappeared through the doors.
Hours later, the facility was silent.
Evelyn sat beside Lydia.
Adrian stood near the window.
Clara held her daughter close.
Benjamin reviewed the evidence.
For the first time in years, Charles was no longer controlling the room.
But Lydia couldn't celebrate.
She looked at her mother.
“You knew my daughter could die.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I was afraid.”
“And you never told me.”
“I wanted you to have one normal day.”
Lydia touched her stomach.
“I don't want normal.”
She looked at Adrian.
“I want the truth.”
Adrian crossed the room.
He took her hand.
“No more secrets.”
Lydia looked at him.
“No more.”
Behind them, Elena suddenly gasped.
Everyone turned.
She was staring at a monitor.
A new message had appeared.
Not from Charles.
Not from Margaret.
Not from the hospital.
Only four words.
THE ORIGINAL SUBJECT AWAKENED.
Elena went pale.
Lydia looked at her.
“Who is the original subject?”
Elena whispered:
“My father.”
Adrian froze.
“Charles?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward Lydia.
“Your grandfather.”
The screen changed.
A live image appeared.
An elderly man opened his eyes inside a laboratory.
May you like
Then he looked directly into the camera.
And smiled.
