Chapter 3: The Weight of Real Names

Chapter 3: The Weight of Real Names

Outside the ballroom, Ethan was still being escorted toward the black car waiting at the curb.

Madison was shouting, her voice breaking into fragments of disbelief.

“This is a setup! You can’t just erase someone like this!”

But no one answered her.

Security had already stopped listening.

Inside the ballroom, whispers began to rise again—but this time, they weren’t cruel.

They were uncertain.

Reevaluating everything they thought they knew.

Emma finally sat down.

Her mother approached cautiously.

“Emma… why didn’t you tell me any of this?”

Emma didn’t look up immediately.

“When?” she asked softly.

“When you told me I wasn’t enough?” she added.

Silence.

Her mother flinched.

Benjamin stepped closer.

“She didn’t hide the truth to deceive you,” he said. “She hid it because she wanted to be loved without conditions.”

That sentence landed harder than anything else that night.

Emma finally looked at her mother.

“I stopped trying to prove myself a long time ago,” she said. “Because I realized I wasn’t being judged fairly in the first place.”

Her mother’s voice cracked.

“I didn’t know…”

Emma nodded.

“I know.”

Not cruel.

May you like

Not forgiving.

Just honest.
