Chapter 9 — Isabella’s Secret War

Chapter 9 — Isabella’s Secret War

The warehouse became completely silent.

Lorenzo stood with his gun raised.

His father stood twenty feet away.

Gabriel was on his knees, blood running from his mouth.

Elena stood beside the old man in her red coat, calm as if she had walked into a family dinner instead of an armed standoff.

And Isabella held Hope against her chest.

Emma stood behind Lorenzo.

Two little girls.

Two secrets.

Two lives that had been hidden from him.

For eight months, Lorenzo had believed he had lost everything.

Now he understood the truth was somehow worse.

He had never known what he had.

His father smiled.

“You have ten seconds.”

Lorenzo didn't blink.

“For what?”

“Give me the baby.”

“No.”

His father's smile disappeared.

“Then your brother dies.”

Gabriel looked up.

“Don't.”

Lorenzo glanced at him.

Gabriel shook his head.

“Don't give him anything.”

His father turned toward him.

“You've always been sentimental.”

Gabriel laughed weakly.

“And you've always been a coward.”

The old man's expression hardened.

He raised one hand.

One of the armed men pressed a gun against Gabriel's head.

Lorenzo's finger tightened around his trigger.

“Stop.”

His father looked at him.

“Good.”

Lorenzo lowered his weapon slightly.

“But Hope stays with me.”

“No.”

“Then kill me.”

His father stared.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“You want the baby?”

“Yes.”

“Come take her.”

Isabella grabbed his arm.

“Lorenzo.”

He looked at her.

“Stay behind me.”

She shook her head.

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

“Then explain.”

“I can't.”

“Not anymore.”

His voice broke.

“You don't get to tell me there are no more secrets after everything you've done.”

Isabella looked at him.

“I didn't do it for myself.”

“You always say that.”

“Because it's true.”

“Then prove it.”

She stared at him for several seconds.

Then she looked toward Lorenzo's father.

And something changed in her face.

Fear disappeared.

What replaced it was anger.

Cold.

Ancient.

Personal.

“You want the truth?”

His father smiled.

“Go ahead.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“I started the war.”

The warehouse went silent.

Lorenzo stared.

“What?”

Isabella looked at him.

“I didn't disappear eight months ago because I was afraid.”

She looked at his father.

“I disappeared because I was preparing to destroy you.”

Nobody moved.

Even Elena looked surprised.

Lorenzo lowered his gun.

“You started this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father killed my mother.”

Lorenzo looked at his father.

His father's face remained expressionless.

“That's impossible.”

Isabella laughed bitterly.

“Your father has been telling you what is possible your entire life.”

She pointed at him.

“He ordered the crash.”

Lorenzo's chest tightened.

“The crash?”

“The one that supposedly killed me and Giulia.”

His father said nothing.

Isabella continued.

“He wanted you broken.”

“Why?”

“Because broken men are easier to control.”

Lorenzo stared at his father.

“You knew?”

His father finally spoke.

“I knew you would eventually understand.”

“Understand what?”

“That your fiancée was never innocent.”

Isabella's eyes flashed.

“Neither were you.”

Lorenzo looked between them.

“What happened?”

His father sighed.

“Your father was going to kill me.”

Isabella laughed.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“He was going to kill Hope.”

Lorenzo's eyes moved to the baby.

“Why?”

“Because Hope carries the Bellini inheritance.”

His father nodded.

“Correct.”

Lorenzo stared.

“And what does that mean?”

Isabella answered.

“It means whoever controls Hope controls the Swallow Archive.”

Lorenzo's jaw tightened.

“Again with the archive.”

“Because you still don't understand its importance.”

“Then tell me.”

Isabella looked at him.

“The archive contains more than secrets.”

“What else?”

“Names.”

“Of criminals?”

“Of heirs.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“What heirs?”

“Every family connected to the old European syndicates.”

She took a breath.

“Every bloodline.”

Lorenzo looked at Hope.

“And she's one of them.”

“Yes.”

“Which bloodline?”

Isabella's voice became quiet.

“The Bellini line.”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“You said Matteo Bellini was your grandfather's son.”

“He was.”

“Then why does Hope have his blood?”

“Because Matteo had a daughter.”

Lorenzo stared.

“Who?”

Isabella looked toward Elena.

“Elena.”

Lorenzo froze.

Elena's expression didn't change.

“My first wife?”

“Yes.”

“She was Matteo's daughter?”

“No.”

Isabella shook her head.

“Matteo's granddaughter.”

Lorenzo felt dizzy.

“Elena was Bellini.”

“Yes.”

“And Hope?”

“Bellini and DeLuca.”

Lorenzo looked at his daughter.

His father stepped forward.

“That is why she must be removed.”

Lorenzo raised his gun again.

“Take one more step.”

His father stopped.

“You don't understand what you are protecting.”

“My daughter.”

“No.”

He pointed toward Hope.

“A war.”

Elena finally spoke.

“He's right.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You're working with him.”

“For now.”

“Why?”

“Because I want Emma alive.”

Lorenzo's face hardened.

“You're her mother.”

“Yes.”

“You took her.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me grieve.”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I watched you mourn a child who was never dead.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was hunting her.”

“So you took her.”

“I saved her.”

“By making me think she was dead?”

“You would have followed us.”

“I would have protected her.”

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“You would have trusted your father.”

Lorenzo stopped.

“I didn't know the truth.”

“Exactly.”

She touched her red coat.

“I needed you angry enough to stop listening to him.”

Lorenzo stared.

“You used my grief.”

“Yes.”

“That doesn't make it right.”

“No.”

Elena looked down.

“But it kept Emma alive.”

A sudden explosion shook the warehouse.

The windows shattered.

The armed men turned.

Rico fired.

Chaos erupted.

Lorenzo grabbed Emma.

“DOWN!”

Isabella shielded Hope.

Gabriel rolled behind a crate.

Gunfire filled the room.

Lorenzo saw one of his father's men fall.

Another fired toward Isabella.

Lorenzo shot him first.

Then another.

His father disappeared behind the smoke.

“Elena!”

The woman in the red coat ran toward Emma.

Lorenzo raised his weapon.

“Don't touch her!”

Elena stopped.

“I won't.”

She looked behind him.

“Someone else is coming.”

Lorenzo turned.

The warehouse doors burst open.

A dozen men entered.

Not DeLuca.

Not Bellini.

Men wearing silver swallow pins.

Isabella whispered:

“The Swallows.”

Lorenzo stared.

“You said they were destroyed.”

“I said they disappeared.”

The leader stepped forward.

He was an old man with white hair.

His eyes settled on Hope.

Then on Isabella.

“You kept her alive.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“Yes.”

“You were ordered to surrender her.”

“I refused.”

The man smiled.

“That was your mistake.”

Lorenzo moved between them.

“You're not taking my daughter.”

The old man looked at him.

“Your daughter?”

He laughed.

“She belongs to no father.”

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

“Try taking her.”

The old man looked amused.

Then he looked at Isabella.

“Tell him.”

Isabella shook her head.

“Tell me what?”

The old man smiled.

“Ask Isabella why she chose you.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“What does he mean?”

Isabella didn't answer.

The old man continued.

“She didn't fall in love with you.”

Lorenzo's heart tightened.

“She was assigned to you.”

Silence.

Lorenzo looked at Isabella.

“Is that true?”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.”

He stepped backward.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To get close to your father.”

“And Hope?”

“To create an heir.”

Lorenzo stared at her.

“You planned Hope?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I fell in love with you.”

His face tightened.

“After you were assigned to me?”

“Yes.”

“And the pregnancy?”

“I didn't plan it.”

“Then why did you hide her?”

“Because your father wanted to use her.”

Lorenzo looked at Hope.

The baby slept peacefully through the chaos.

“You were fighting your own people.”

“Yes.”

“For her?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three years.”

Lorenzo's voice softened.

“You've been fighting for three years?”

Isabella nodded.

“Alone.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Not alone.”

She pointed toward Elena.

“She helped me.”

Lorenzo looked at Elena.

“You two were working together?”

“Yes.”

“Against my father?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you let me believe you were dead?”

Elena answered.

“Because we needed your father to believe the war was over.”

Lorenzo stared.

“And the memorial?”

“Part of the plan.”

“The empty coffin?”

“Necessary.”

“The crash?”

“Necessary.”

His expression changed.

“You're telling me Isabella wasn't in that car?”

“No.”

“Then who was?”

Elena looked at him.

“Your father's other daughter.”

Lorenzo froze.

“My father has another daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Elena didn't answer.

Isabella did.

“Clara.”

Lorenzo stared.

“Clara?”

“The woman whose baby you thought you buried.”

He felt sick.

“She was alive?”

“Until the crash.”

“Then she died because of me.”

“No.”

Isabella shook her head.

“She died because she volunteered.”

“For what?”

“To make your father believe Isabella was dead.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

All those months.

All that grief.

All those funerals.

All those lies.

And Clara had died willingly.

For Isabella.

For Hope.

For him.

His father's voice cut through the room.

“You've heard enough.”

Lorenzo turned.

His father stood near the rear door.

A gun pressed against Gabriel's head.

“You have one final choice.”

Lorenzo aimed.

“Let him go.”

“Give me Hope.”

“No.”

“Then Gabriel dies.”

Gabriel looked at Lorenzo.

“Don't.”

His father cocked the gun.

“Choose.”

Lorenzo's hands shook.

Emma stood beside Elena.

Isabella held Hope.

Rico was wounded.

The Swallows were closing in.

His father had control of the exits.

There was nowhere to run.

Lorenzo looked at Gabriel.

His brother smiled.

“You know what to do.”

Lorenzo understood.

Gabriel wasn't asking to be saved.

He was telling him to protect the girls.

Lorenzo lowered his weapon.

His father smiled.

“Good.”

He walked toward Hope.

Isabella stepped backward.

“Don't.”

He reached for the baby.

Then—

Gabriel moved.

He slammed his head backward into the man's face.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Rico fired.

The old man's weapon flew from his hand.

Lorenzo grabbed Hope.

Elena grabbed Emma.

Isabella attacked the nearest guard.

The warehouse erupted again.

But this time, Lorenzo's father was alone.

He ran.

Lorenzo followed.

They reached the loading dock.

Rain poured outside.

His father climbed into a black SUV.

Lorenzo fired at the tires.

The vehicle swerved.

It crashed through the gate.

Lorenzo ran after it.

He stopped.

His father leaned out the window.

“You think you've won?”

Lorenzo raised his gun.

“You're finished.”

His father laughed.

“No.”

He pointed toward Hope.

“You're just beginning.”

The SUV disappeared into the rain.

For several minutes, Lorenzo stood motionless.

Then Isabella came up behind him.

“Are you okay?”

He turned.

“No.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“I don't know who to trust.”

“I know.”

“You.”

She swallowed.

“I know.”

“Gabriel.”

“Yes.”

“Elena.”

“Yes.”

“My father.”

“Yes.”

“Even myself.”

Isabella looked at him.

“You can trust one thing.”

“What?”

She pointed toward Hope.

“Her.”

Lorenzo looked down.

Hope's tiny hand had closed around his finger.

He smiled.

Then Emma tugged his coat.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“Can we go home?”

Lorenzo looked at Isabella.

“Do we have a home?”

She nodded.

“Not anymore.”

He thought for a moment.

“Then we'll build one.”

Emma smiled.

They returned to the safehouse before dawn.

Gabriel survived.

Rico survived.

The Swallows disappeared before the police arrived.

But Lorenzo couldn't sleep.

He sat beside Hope's crib.

Emma slept on the couch nearby.

Isabella sat across from him.

Neither spoke.

Finally, Lorenzo asked:

“Why did you choose me?”

Isabella looked at him.

“I already told you.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I want the real answer.”

She took a breath.

“Because your mother once saved my life.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before you were born.”

“How?”

“Your mother discovered what your father was planning.”

“What?”

“To kill the Bellini heirs.”

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

“And she stopped him?”

“No.”

Isabella shook her head.

“She couldn't.”

“What did she do?”

“She hid me.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew I was pregnant.”

Lorenzo looked toward Hope.

“You were pregnant with her?”

“Yes.”

“But Hope is three.”

“I know.”

“Then whose baby was it?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Not Hope.”

Lorenzo's expression changed.

“What?”

Isabella began crying.

“The baby I was carrying that night…”

She swallowed.

“…was the child your father believed he killed.”

Lorenzo stared.

“Giulia?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Isabella whispered:

“Your first daughter.”

Lorenzo's face went pale.

“But Emma—”

“Emma is your second.”

“Hope?”

“Your third.”

Lorenzo looked at the three sleeping children.

Three daughters.

Three mothers.

Three secrets.

His entire life had been built around them.

And now, finally, the truth was beginning to emerge.

But one question remained.

He looked at Isabella.

“Then who is the child I buried?”

Isabella's tears fell.

“Your father's daughter.”

Lorenzo's blood froze.

“Clara?”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

His father's daughter had died in the coffin meant for Isabella.

The war had been going on long before he understood it.

And Isabella had been fighting it from inside his family.

But before Lorenzo could speak again, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice said:

“Your father isn't the one you should be afraid of.”

Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.

“Who is this?”

“You're looking for the Swallow Archive.”

“Yes.”

“You won't find it.”

“Why?”

“Because Isabella doesn't have it.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

The voice continued:

“Your mother does.”

Lorenzo froze.

“My mother is dead.”

A pause.

Then:

“No.”

The call ended.

Lorenzo slowly lowered the phone.

Isabella looked at him.

“What happened?”

He stared at her.

“My mother is alive.”

Isabella's face went white.

“No.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“That can't be.”

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

But a black car was parked across the street.

A woman sat inside.

Watching the house.

Lorenzo couldn't see her face.

Then the car's interior light came on.

He saw her.

His mother.

Alive.

And holding a photograph.

A photograph of Hope.

Lorenzo stepped toward the window.

His mother lifted the photograph.

Then she slowly placed one finger against her lips.

A warning.

Or a threat.

Lorenzo couldn't tell which.

But one thing was certain.

May you like

Isabella's secret war was over.

His had just begun.
