Chapter 2: The Woman They Underestimated

Chapter 2: The Woman They Underestimated

That evening, Marcus arrived at his downtown penthouse.

Jessica was already gone.

Every designer dress.

Every suitcase.

Every trace of her.

Gone.

Only a single note remained.

"Liars deserve each other."

Marcus crushed the paper in his fist.

His phone rang.

It was his attorney.

"We have a problem."

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"Only one?"

"The hospital file wasn't the biggest issue."

His stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

"The documents exposed several financial records."

Marcus froze.

"What records?"

"The accounts you moved through Clara's charitable foundation."

Silence.

Months earlier, Marcus had quietly transferred millions through projects controlled by Clara's nonprofit organization.

He assumed nobody paid attention.

He was wrong.

While Marcus spent his time chasing Jessica and planning his divorce, Clara had been working.

Watching.

Documenting.

Preparing.

The attorney's voice lowered.

"The board has suspended your position."

Marcus sat down heavily.

"What?"

"The investigation began this afternoon."

His breathing became shallow.

Everything was unraveling.

The company.

The investors.

The reputation he spent twenty years building.

All because he believed Clara was weak.

He remembered the woman standing outside the hospital.

Calm.

Silent.

Unmoved.

The same woman he thought would beg.

Instead, she had walked away carrying something he could never recover.

Dignity.

Meanwhile, Clara sat alone in her hospital room.

The evening sun painted the walls gold.

For the first time in months, she felt peace.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

Dr. Hayes entered carrying another envelope.

"This arrived for you."

She frowned.

There was no sender.

Only her name.

Inside was a letter.

One sentence.

"Your father wanted you to know the truth when the time was right."

Attached was a small brass key.

Clara's pulse quickened.

Her father had died seven years earlier.

May you like

And yet somehow...

he had planned for this moment.
