CHAPTER 4: NORMAL EVENING

CHAPTER 4: NORMAL EVENING

Cassandra came home at 6:42 p.m.

Perfect timing.

Always perfect.

She placed her keys down gently on the marble counter and smiled when she saw him.

“Marcus,” she said softly. “You’re quiet tonight.”

She didn’t notice Lily wasn’t in the living room.

Or maybe she did.

And chose not to mention it.

Marcus stood by the staircase.

“Where is she?” he asked.

Cassandra tilted her head slightly.

“In her room. Resting. She’s been emotional again today.”

A practiced answer.

Polished.

Safe.

She walked closer, reaching for his arm.

“You’re overworking yourself,” she added gently. “You should let me take care of things at home.”

Marcus looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

And for the first time in years…

May you like

he didn’t see elegance.

He saw control.
