CHAPTER 2: THE DOOR THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE OPENED

CHAPTER 2: THE DOOR THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE OPENED

“For now.”

The words still hung in the air like something unfinished.

Emma hugged her teddy bear to her chest again, as if afraid even hope could be taken back.

Sarah didn’t relax.

Because people like Alexander Mitchell didn’t say “for now” unless something was about to change.

And she was right.

A phone in Alexander’s pocket vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

He didn’t move.

Then again—urgent, persistent.

He finally pulled it out.

The screen lit up with a single name:

RICHARD HARRINGTON

Sarah noticed the way Alexander’s expression changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

And something deeper.

Warning.

He declined the call.

Silence returned—but not peace.

“Who is it?” Sarah asked carefully.

Alexander didn’t answer right away.

Instead, he looked at Emma.

Then at the teddy bear.

Then at Sarah.

And something inside him shifted—like a locked door finally realizing it had a key.

“You need to pack,” he said quietly.

Sarah froze.

“…What?”

“Not tonight,” he added quickly. “But soon.”

Emma stepped back slightly.

“Did I do something wrong?” she asked.

That question hit harder than any legal document ever could.

Alexander shook his head.

“No. You did nothing wrong.”

His voice lowered.

“But someone is going to come here who doesn’t care about that.”

Sarah’s stomach tightened.

“Is this about the eviction?”

Alexander hesitated.

Then, for the first time, the truth cracked his voice.

“No,” he said. “It stopped being about eviction a long time ago.”
