CHAPTER 4 THE SECRET INSIDE THE GUEST HOUSE

CHAPTER 4
THE SECRET INSIDE THE GUEST HOUSE
The Prescott estate sat on twenty acres of private land.
A place designed to make people feel small.
The gates alone were taller than most houses.
The driveway curved through rows of perfectly trimmed trees.
Every stone.
Every flower.
Every fountain.
Had been placed carefully.
Nothing was accidental.
That was the Prescott way.
Control everything.
The environment.
The conversation.
The story.
Especially the story.
But what they forgot was something every soldier learns:
The strongest walls often hide the darkest secrets.
I arrived at the Prescott estate just after sunrise.
Not alone.
Detective Sarah Mitchell was beside me.
Daniel Reeves followed behind.
The Prescott security team immediately approached.
Three men.
Black suits.
Professional posture.
But nervous eyes.
Interesting.
People who were confident did not look nervous.
“Can I help you?” one of them asked.
I held up my identification.
“Detective Mitchell. We have authorization to inspect the property connected to an ongoing investigation.”
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“We weren’t informed.”
“That is not my problem.”
His jaw tightened.
Behind him, the enormous front doors opened.
Margaret Prescott appeared.
Of course she did.
Perfect hair.
Perfect clothes.
Perfect expression.
The woman looked like she had stepped out of a magazine cover.
“Colonel Hart.”
Her voice was polite.
Almost friendly.
But I could hear the anger underneath.
“Margaret.”
She looked at Detective Mitchell.
“Is this really necessary?”
The detective answered.
“Yes.”
Margaret smiled.
“I would hate for this family to be embarrassed by unnecessary accusations.”
I looked at her.
“Embarrassment usually comes from actions.”
Her smile faded.
Only slightly.
But enough.
She stepped aside.
“Come in.”
The inside of the mansion was exactly what I expected.
Expensive.
Cold.
Empty.
The kind of place where everything looked valuable but nothing felt alive.
Family photographs lined the walls.
Generations of Prescotts smiling.
Celebrations.
Awards.
Political events.
A perfect history.
A carefully edited history.
Daniel walked beside me.
“Notice something?”
I glanced at him.
“What?”
“No pictures of Emily.”
I stopped.
He was right.
Not one.
The woman who had married into this family.
The woman who lived here.
The woman whose reputation they claimed to protect.
Was invisible.
That told me more than any document could.
We walked toward the guest house.
Ethan was waiting outside.
His expression was angry.
“You really think you can come here and search my family’s home?”
I looked at him.
“This is not about your family’s home.”
“Then what?”
I stared at the building behind him.
“This is about what happened inside.”
His face changed.
Just for a second.
Fear.
Then anger covered it.
“You’re obsessed.”
“No.”
I walked past him.
“I’m determined.”
The guest house was smaller than the main mansion.
But still larger than most people’s homes.
A bedroom.
A living area.
A kitchen.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
That was usually the problem.
The worst things were often hidden behind ordinary appearances.
Detective Mitchell began documenting the room.
Daniel checked the walls.
I walked slowly.
Observing.
Emily’s words echoed in my mind.
They kept me here.
They took my phone.
They said nobody would believe me.
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I imagined my daughter sitting in this room.
Alone.
Afraid.
Waiting for someone to come.
My fists tightened.
“Colonel.”
Daniel’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
I turned.
He was standing near a bookshelf.
“There’s something here.”
I walked over.
He pointed at the wall.
“Look closely.”
At first, I saw nothing.
Then I noticed.
A small gap.
Almost invisible.
A mistake.
A tiny imperfection.
Daniel removed a small flashlight and examined it.
“This panel was installed recently.”
Detective Mitchell joined us.
“Can you open it?”
Daniel carefully removed the cover.
Behind it were wires.
A small electronic device.
The room went silent.
Margaret appeared in the doorway.
“What are you doing?”
Nobody answered.
Detective Mitchell looked at her.
“Mrs. Prescott.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“What?”
The detective pointed.
“Do you want to explain why there is surveillance equipment hidden inside this room?”
For the first time…
Margaret Prescott had no immediate response.
The search continued.
And then we found more.
Hidden cameras.
Audio recording devices.
A locked cabinet.
Inside:
Hard drives.
Multiple phones.
Documents.
The evidence was no longer a family disagreement.
It was a system.
A machine built to control people.
Detective Mitchell looked through the files.
“Colonel…”
I walked toward her.
“What?”
She held up a document.
“This is a list.”
“Of what?”
She looked at Margaret.
“People.”
I took the paper.
Names.
Dates.
Notes.
Every person connected to the Prescott family.
Employees.
Business partners.
Former friends.
And beside many names were comments.
Personal information.
Weaknesses.
Private details.
Things no one should have known.
Daniel whispered:
“They collect leverage.”
I looked at Margaret.
“You keep files on people.”
She remained silent.
That was answer enough.
Ethan suddenly stepped forward.
“This is being misunderstood.”
Everyone looked at him.
He continued.
“My mother uses security systems because of our status.”
Detective Mitchell raised an eyebrow.
“Security cameras record private conversations?”
Ethan froze.
“No.”
“Then why are there audio recordings?”
Silence.
His confidence disappeared.
For the first time, Ethan looked like a man who realized the ground beneath him was collapsing.
I looked at him.
“Did you know about this?”
He avoided my eyes.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You knew.”
His voice became louder.
“I didn’t know everything.”
Everything.
Not I didn’t know anything.
A confession hidden inside a denial.
Then Daniel found something else.
A folder.
Marked:
EMILY HART PRESCOTT
My heart stopped.
Inside were photographs.
Messages.
Private conversations.
Medical records.
Personal information.
Years of Emily’s life.
Collected.
Stored.
Analyzed.
Like she was not a person.
Like she was a project.
I felt something inside me go cold.
Margaret watched me.
And I realized something.
She wasn’t ashamed.
She was angry she had been discovered.
That was the difference between someone who made a mistake…
And someone who believed they had done nothing wrong.
“You monitored my daughter.”
My voice was quiet.
Margaret lifted her chin.
“We protected our family.”
“No.”
I looked at the files.
“You controlled her.”
Her expression hardened.
“Careful, Colonel.”
I turned.
“Is that another threat?”
She said nothing.
Because this time…
She knew.
Everyone in that room knew.
The balance had shifted.
Outside the guest house, Detective Mitchell pulled me aside.
“Colonel.”
“Yes?”
“This changes everything.”
I looked back at the mansion.
“What do you mean?”
“This is no longer just an assault investigation.”
She lowered her voice.
“This could involve illegal surveillance, intimidation, coercion, possible evidence tampering.”
I nodded.
The Prescott family had wanted a war.
Now they had one.
Daniel approached.
“We found something else.”
“What?”
He handed me a small envelope.
“Hidden behind the cabinet.”
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Not from Margaret.
Not from Ethan.
Someone else.
The handwriting was shaky.
The message was short.
But powerful.
IF YOU FOUND THIS, PLEASE HELP ME. I WASN’T THE FIRST ONE.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
He stared at the mansion.
Then back at me.
“It means Emily wasn’t their first victim.”
That night, the Prescott family lost control of the story.
Because the world no longer saw a wealthy family protecting their reputation.
They saw something much darker.
A pattern.
A history.
A secret buried inside a guest house.
And somewhere in Charlotte…
Someone else was waiting.
May you like
Waiting for someone brave enough to listen.
