CHAPTER THE PLAN BEHIND THE MARRIAGE

CHAPTER 8

THE PLAN BEHIND THE MARRIAGE

The video ended.

But nobody moved.

The screen remained black.

The room remained silent.

And Margaret Prescott’s voice stayed in my head.

“Emily Hart is exactly what we need.”

Not who.

Not who she is.

What.

Like my daughter was a resource.

A tool.

A strategy.

A piece on a board.

I had spent my life fighting people who viewed human beings as numbers.

Enemy counts.

Strategic assets.

Collateral damage.

I never imagined someone would look at my own child that way.

Daniel was the first to speak.

“Play it again.”

I didn’t answer.

I pressed the button.

The video restarted.

This time, we watched carefully.

Not as parents.

Not as people hurt by what we heard.

As investigators.

The recording showed Margaret sitting in an office.

Younger.

Maybe eight years earlier.

Across from her was another person.

A man.

His face was partially hidden.

But his voice was clear.

“So you’re certain?”

Margaret smiled.

“Absolutely.”

“And the daughter?”

“She is the important part.”

My hands tightened.

The man continued.

“What about the mother?”

Margaret laughed softly.

“Victoria Hart?”

“Yes.”

“She’s exactly why this works.”

A pause.

“She has influence. Respect. A military background.”

Then Margaret said something that made my blood run cold.

“People trust heroes.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Claire whispered:

“They planned everything.”

I looked at her.

“How long?”

She looked ashamed.

“I don’t know.”

“Guess.”

Claire swallowed.

“Before Ethan met Emily.”

The room became colder.

Daniel stood.

“This wasn’t about marriage.”

“No.”

I looked at the frozen screen.

“It was an operation.”

The next morning, we began rebuilding the timeline.

Not the story the Prescotts wanted people to hear.

The real one.

Daniel covered the whiteboard with dates.

YEAR ONE: Ethan Prescott meets Emily Hart.

YEAR TWO: Engagement announced.

YEAR THREE: Marriage.

YEAR FOUR: Isolation begins.

YEAR FIVE: Emily escapes.

But there was something strange.

The timeline had gaps.

Large ones.

I pointed.

“What happened here?”

Daniel looked closer.

“That’s the period before the wedding.”

“Exactly.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning that is where they started.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“I remember something.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Margaret was very interested in Emily’s family.”

“Why?”

“At first, I thought it was because of your reputation.”

I looked at her.

“But?”

Claire hesitated.

“But Margaret wasn’t interested in your status.”

She looked at me.

“She was interested in your access.”

The room went quiet.

My military career.

My contacts.

My relationships.

The trust people placed in me.

That was what they wanted.

Not my money.

Not my name.

My credibility.

Daniel walked toward the board.

“They wanted proximity to power.”

“Yes.”

“But why Emily?”

Claire answered.

“Because she loved them.”

That sentence hurt.

Because it was true.

The Prescott family understood something dangerous.

The easiest person to manipulate was not someone who hated you.

It was someone who trusted you.

Later that afternoon, Emily watched the video.

I almost didn’t let her.

But she deserved the truth.

Not a protected version.

Not a softened version.

The truth.

She sat on the couch.

Her face changed as the recording played.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then pain.

When Margaret said:

“She is exactly what we need.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“No.”

I sat beside her.

“Emily…”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“That can’t be real.”

I reached for her hand.

“It is.”

She looked at me.

“All those times I thought I wasn’t good enough…”

Her voice broke.

“All those times Ethan said I was lucky they accepted me…”

A tear fell.

“They were pretending?”

I answered carefully.

“Yes.”

She looked away.

For a moment, I saw the old wound.

The one they had created.

The belief that something was wrong with her.

“Mom…”

“Yes?”

“What did they want from me?”

That was the question.

The question we still did not know.

Daniel spent the next twenty-four hours tracing financial records.

At midnight, he called.

“Victoria.”

His voice was serious.

“I found the connection.”

I stood immediately.

“What connection?”

“The Prescott Foundation.”

I waited.

“They have been funding a private influence network.”

“Explain.”

“Businesses. Political organizations. Research groups.”

“And?”

“And every organization has benefited from information.”

I frowned.

“Information about what?”

Daniel paused.

“People.”

The same pattern.

Secrets.

Leverage.

Control.

“They collect information on influential families.”

I understood.

“They blackmail people.”

“Not directly.”

“Then how?”

“They create situations where people need Prescott help.”

I looked at the documents.

A system.

A machine.

The Prescotts were not just wealthy.

They were architects of dependency.

Then Daniel found something else.

Something connected to Emily.

A transaction.

A company.

A name.

Hartwell Security Solutions.

I frowned.

“That company has nothing to do with us.”

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s the problem.”

“What?”

“It was created three months before Ethan met Emily.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who owns it?”

Daniel turned the screen toward me.

The answer appeared.

A hidden subsidiary.

A company inside another company.

But the final owner was clear.

Prescott Holdings.

They had been watching my family.

Before the wedding.

Before the relationship.

Before Emily ever knew Ethan.

This was not a family conflict.

This was not a bad marriage.

This was an engineered trap.

That evening, I received a call from Margaret.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Colonel Hart.”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Victoria.”

I said nothing.

“You’ve been busy.”

“Yes.”

“I imagine you think you’ve discovered everything.”

“No.”

A pause.

“I think I’ve discovered enough.”

She laughed softly.

“That confidence is dangerous.”

“So is underestimating people.”

Silence.

Then Margaret said:

“You should ask your daughter why she never told you the truth.”

My expression changed.

“What?”

“She knows more than she admits.”

The line went quiet.

I stared at the phone.

“What are you talking about?”

But Margaret had already ended the call.

I found Emily upstairs.

She was sitting on the edge of her bed.

She knew immediately something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I closed the door.

“Margaret called.”

Emily’s face changed.

“What did she say?”

I looked at her.

“She said you know more than you told me.”

Emily became completely still.

And that scared me.

Because fear was not the reaction of someone hearing a false accusation.

Fear was the reaction of someone hearing a painful truth.

“Emily.”

She looked down.

“Mom…”

My heart sank.

“What?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“There is something I never told you.”

I sat beside her.

“Tell me.”

She wiped her face.

“Before I married Ethan…”

A pause.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A file.”

My breathing stopped.

“A file about you.”

The room went silent.

“What kind of file?”

Emily looked terrified.

“The kind that made me realize…”

She looked at me.

“They didn’t just choose me.”

A tear fell.

“They chose you.”

And suddenly…

The entire battle changed.

Because the Prescott family had not only targeted my daughter.

They had targeted me.

May you like

And Emily had been carrying that secret alone.
