CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST CHOICE

CHAPTER 13 — THE LAST CHOICE
The gunshot never came.
Michael pulled the trigger.
I heard the mechanism click.
Nothing.
He lowered the weapon.
My heart was pounding so hard it hurt.
Claire screamed anyway.
“Michael!”
He looked at me.
“Empty.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“The gun is empty.”
My father dropped it onto the floor.
Then he smiled.
“I needed Graham to believe I was still obeying him.”
I couldn't move.
“You were testing me.”
“No.”
He looked at Lily.
“I was testing him.”
The laboratory speakers crackled.
Graham's voice filled the room.
“You disappoint me, Michael.”
My father looked up.
“I learned from you.”
A long silence followed.
Then Graham laughed.
“You think this changes anything?”
Michael walked toward the control console.
“Yes.”
He pressed a button.
Every screen came alive.
Hundreds of locations appeared.
New York.
London.
Paris.
Geneva.
Singapore.
Los Angeles.
Thousands of names.
Thousands of children.
I stared at the screens.
“The Archive.”
Michael nodded.
“All of it.”
Graham's voice returned.
“You cannot destroy it.”
“We don't need to.”
Michael looked at me.
“We need to release it.”
My blood ran cold.
“Release what?”
“The truth.”
Claire understood immediately.
“No.”
Michael looked at her.
“Yes.”
“If you release those records, innocent people will be exposed.”
“They already are.”
“Governments will collapse.”
“Good.”
“People will die.”
“Some may.”
Claire shook her head.
“You promised me you would never do this.”
“I promised you I'd protect Ethan.”
He looked at me.
“I never promised I'd protect the world from its own crimes.”
I stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Everyone looked at me.
I pointed toward the servers.
“You're talking about exposing thousands of identities.”
“Yes.”
“Families.”
“Yes.”
“Children.”
“Yes.”
“People who never chose any of this.”
Michael nodded.
“And if we don't?”
I looked at Lily.
Graham's voice answered for him.
“Then the system survives.”
The countdown appeared again.
00:04:18
Michael pointed toward the screen.
“At zero, Graham gains complete access.”
“And then?”
“He controls every identity in the Archive.”
“And Lily?”
“He controls her.”
I looked at my daughter.
She was sitting in the machine.
Terrified.
“Then destroy it.”
Michael shook his head.
“We can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Lily is connected.”
“What happens if we destroy the system?”
“She could die.”
Silence.
I looked at Claire.
“Is that true?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
My daughter.
The Archive.
Thousands of children.
One choice.
One impossible choice.
Then Lily spoke.
“Daddy.”
I opened my eyes.
“Yes?”
“Can I tell you something?”
I walked toward her.
She reached for my hand.
“I don't want to be a key.”
My throat tightened.
“You're not.”
“But everyone keeps saying I am.”
“You're my daughter.”
She smiled faintly.
“Then save me.”
I knelt.
“I will.”
“No matter what?”
“No matter what.”
She looked at me.
“Even if other people get mad?”
I nodded.
“Even then.”
She whispered:
“Then don't let them use me.”
I kissed her forehead.
“I won't.”
Michael looked at me.
“Ethan…”
I stood.
“We're not sacrificing Lily.”
He nodded slowly.
“Then what do we do?”
I looked at the screens.
At the thousands of names.
At the countdown.
Then I noticed something.
One location was flashing.
PRIMARY NODE: CARTER ESTATE
But beneath it was another line.
SECONDARY CORE: UNKNOWN
I stared.
“That's it.”
Michael frowned.
“What?”
“The Archive has a backup.”
“Yes.”
“Not in Lily.”
“No.”
“Somewhere else.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Where?”
I pointed at the screen.
“The system doesn't know.”
Claire looked at me.
“Then who does?”
I thought about Noah's message.
The second betrayal has already happened.
I thought about Claire.
Michael.
Victor.
Graham.
Then I understood.
“Noah.”
Michael's eyes widened.
“He knows where the secondary core is.”
“And he left that message so we'd find it.”
Claire whispered:
“He knew this would happen.”
“Then we find him.”
Michael shook his head.
“We don't have time.”
I looked at the countdown.
00:02:51
“Then make time.”
He stared at me.
I pointed toward the central console.
“Can you freeze the countdown?”
“For sixty seconds.”
“Do it.”
Michael started typing.
The screens flickered.
COUNTDOWN PAUSED.
I turned toward Claire.
“Where is Noah?”
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
She hesitated.
I stepped closer.
“Claire.”
She looked at me.
“I know where he was taken.”
“Where?”
“The old children's hospital.”
“Which one?”
“St. Vincent's.”
I knew it.
Abandoned for fifteen years.
I turned toward my mother.
“Can you access the system remotely?”
She nodded.
“If Michael gives me the encryption key.”
Michael looked at her.
Then at me.
He hesitated.
Finally, he gave her the key.
She entered it.
A map appeared.
One red dot.
St. Vincent's Hospital.
I grabbed the car keys.
Michael stopped me.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“You can't go.”
“Why?”
“Because Graham wants you to.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He needs you away from Lily.”
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the laboratory door.
“You're right.”
Michael's expression changed.
“You stay.”
I handed him the keys.
“You protect Lily.”
He nodded.
“And Claire?”
I looked at my wife.
She stepped forward.
“I go with you.”
“No.”
Her face fell.
“You don't trust me.”
“I don't.”
She nodded.
“I understand.”
I turned toward my mother.
“You stay too.”
She looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because if I'm wrong, someone needs to know where we went.”
I looked at Michael.
“And if I'm right?”
He understood.
“We finish it.”
I left.
The rain had become heavy.
I drove toward St. Vincent's alone.
Every traffic light seemed too slow.
Every second felt like a year.
Then my phone rang.
No caller ID.
I answered.
“Hello?”
Noah's voice.
“Dad.”
I nearly lost control of the car.
“Noah!”
“Don't come here.”
“Where are you?”
“Inside.”
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Is anyone with you?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Noah went silent.
Then whispered:
“Graham.”
My blood ran cold.
“Get out.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because he has something.”
“What?”
“He has Mom.”
I slammed the brakes.
“What?”
“He took her.”
“Which mom?”
Silence.
Then Noah said:
“Grandma.”
My mother.
I immediately turned the car around.
“Noah, listen to me.”
“Dad—”
“I'm coming.”
“No!”
His voice cracked.
“You can't.”
“Why?”
“Because this is the trap.”
I stopped.
“What trap?”
“The hospital isn't where Graham is.”
“Then where?”
Noah whispered:
“He's at the house.”
My blood went cold.
“Which house?”
“Our house.”
I looked at the road.
The rain.
The city.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Graham didn't need Lily to leave.
He needed me to leave.
He wanted the house empty.
He wanted the laboratory unprotected.
I turned the car around again.
I drove home.
When I arrived, the front door was open.
I ran inside.
The house was silent.
“Lily!”
No answer.
“Claire!”
Nothing.
I ran downstairs.
The laboratory door was open.
The machines were dark.
Michael was gone.
Claire was gone.
Lily was gone.
Only one thing remained on the floor.
The small stuffed rabbit Lily slept with every night.
I picked it up.
My hands shook.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
One sentence.
YOU CHOSE YOUR DAUGHTER.
Another message arrived.
NOW CHOOSE WHETHER SHE LIVES.
Then a video began playing.
Graham appeared on the screen.
Beside him stood Claire.
Her hands were tied.
Beside her was Michael.
Blood ran down his face.
And between them stood Lily.
Terrified.
Graham smiled.
“You wanted to save your daughter.”
He lifted a small device.
“Then come alone.”
I stared at the screen.
“Where?”
The location appeared.
My blood turned cold.
The abandoned estate.
The place where everything had started.
Graham continued.
“You have one hour.”
“What happens after one hour?”
He smiled.
“You will make your final choice.”
The video ended.
I stood alone in the dark laboratory.
Then another notification appeared.
A message from Noah.
DON'T GO.
I stared at it.
A second message appeared.
THE MAN WITH THEM IS NOT GRAHAM.
I froze.
Another message.
IT'S MICHAEL.
I looked at the video again.
My father's face.
His blood.
His silence.
His eyes.
Then I realized something.
The man beside Lily hadn't been Graham.
It had been Michael.
The entire time.
My father hadn't been protecting us.
He had been leading me here.
I backed away from the screen.
“No…”
A final message appeared.
Dad, I'm sorry.
I tried to stop him.
But Michael was the one who betrayed us.
The screen went black.
I stood in the darkness.
For the second time in my life, my father had betrayed me.
But this time, I wasn't a child.
This time, I wasn't going to follow his rules.
I picked up the stuffed rabbit.
Then I looked toward the hidden exit.
“If you want me…”
I whispered into the empty room.
“…come get me.”
I walked upstairs.
I opened the safe.
Inside was the encrypted drive.
The key.
A handgun.
And the one thing Michael had forgotten about.
A photograph.
My father.
Graham.
Victor.
And a fourth man.
A man I had never seen before.
Except I had.
In the corner of the photograph.
On the day Lily was born.
Standing behind Claire.
Watching me.
I suddenly understood.
Graham wasn't the mastermind.
Michael wasn't the mastermind.
Victor wasn't.
The Council wasn't.
There was someone above all of them.
Someone who had been watching my family since the beginning.
Someone who had never needed to step into the light.
I turned the photograph over.
Written on the back were six words:
THE LAST CHOICE BELONGS TO HIM.
May you like
And beneath them was a name.
NOAH CARTER.
