Chapter 3: The Footage

Chapter 3: The Footage

The video was shaky.

Filmed from a low angle in Chloe’s room.

My father’s voice came through first.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerously calm.

“Stand still.”

Chloe’s small voice: “I didn’t mean to spill it, Grandpa, I’m sorry—”

A sharp sound.

Not loud.

But unmistakable.

The camera jerked.

Then came silence.

Then crying.

I stopped the video.

I couldn’t breathe.

My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped the phone.

Chloe was watching me carefully.

“Dad?” she whispered.

That one word pulled me back.

I knelt instantly.

“I believe you,” I said. “I believe you.”

She broke down crying, collapsing into my chest like she had been waiting years for that sentence.

And in that moment, I knew something else too.

This wasn’t the first time.

It was just the first time she could prove it.
