CHAPTER 10 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 10 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE FAMILY
The vault door opened at 6:11 in the morning.
Nobody moved.
We had spent the last ten minutes arguing about whether I should go to Whitmore Tower.
Daniel said no.
My mother said absolutely not.
Preston said he would go with me.
I said I would go alone.
Nobody agreed.
Then the vault unlocked.
A simple message appeared on the screen.
ONE HOUR.
Beneath it:
BRING THE KEY.
And then:
COME WITHOUT PRESTON.
I looked at my husband.
His face tightened.
"They're afraid of me."
"No," Daniel said.
"They're afraid I'll remember."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
He shook his head.
"I don't know."
I hated that answer.
Everyone always knew something.
Nobody ever knew everything.
And somehow I was always the last person to find out.
I picked up the key.
"I'm going."
Preston stepped toward me.
"Elena."
I raised my hand.
"No."
"But—"
"You've lied to me enough."
He stopped.
I looked at him.
"If you follow me, Sophie could die."
His jaw tightened.
"So you want me to sit here?"
"I want you to protect my daughter."
His eyes softened.
"That's all I've ever wanted."
I looked away.
"Then prove it."
Whitmore Tower stood above the city like a monument to everything I had spent my life believing.
Glass.
Steel.
Money.
Power.
A name that had been printed on buildings for decades.
But now I knew the truth.
The Whitmores hadn't built the empire.
They had inherited stolen control.
And somewhere inside that tower was the original Moretti agreement.
The document that could destroy everything.
I entered through the main doors.
Nobody stopped me.
That frightened me.
The security guards didn't ask for identification.
The receptionist stood immediately.
"Mrs. Hale."
I looked at her.
"How do you know me?"
She smiled nervously.
"We were instructed to expect you."
"By whom?"
She didn't answer.
I walked toward the elevator.
The doors opened automatically.
Inside was a single button.
PRIVATE FLOOR
I pressed it.
The doors closed.
The elevator began rising.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
DON'T TRUST YOUR MOTHER.
I stopped breathing.
Another message arrived.
SHE HAS LIED ABOUT THE FIRE.
Then:
ASK HER WHO WAS IN THE CAR.
I stared at the screen.
I had no idea who had sent it.
But the message had hit exactly where it needed to.
The fire.
The fake death.
My father's disappearance.
My mother's confession.
Who had been in the car?
I stepped out of the elevator.
The private floor was almost completely dark.
At the end of the corridor stood a woman.
Victoria.
She was wearing a black suit.
No guards.
No gun.
Just a thin smile.
"Welcome home."
I stared at her.
"This isn't my home."
She smiled.
"It was."
"What happened to my daughter?"
"Safe."
"Where?"
"Very close."
"Bring her to me."
"After we talk."
I stepped forward.
"Then talk."
Victoria looked at the key in my hand.
"You found it."
"Yes."
"You know what it opens?"
"Not yet."
She smiled.
"Your grandmother's room."
I froze.
"My grandmother's?"
"Yes."
"She had a room here?"
"She had an entire floor."
I looked around.
"You mean Victoria Moretti."
Her smile disappeared.
"So you've learned that."
"You lied about who you were."
"No."
"You let everyone believe you were a Whitmore."
"I married a Whitmore."
"That doesn't make you one."
"No."
She looked at me.
"It makes me worse."
She led me down the corridor.
At the end was a door.
Old wood.
Brass handle.
The key fit perfectly.
I turned it.
The door opened.
The room looked untouched.
A desk.
A piano.
Books.
Photographs.
And on the wall...
my grandfather.
Beside him stood a young Victoria.
My grandmother.
I stepped closer.
"She knew you."
"Of course."
"How?"
Victoria laughed.
"She was my sister."
I turned.
"What?"
"Half-sister."
My blood went cold.
"You and my grandmother were sisters?"
"Yes."
"Then why did she sell the Moretti shares?"
Victoria looked at the photograph.
"Because she was afraid."
"Of whom?"
"Your grandfather."
I frowned.
"What did he do?"
"He betrayed our mother."
I stared.
"Our family had three heirs."
"Three?"
"Victoria. Maria. And your grandmother."
I looked at her.
"You were the oldest."
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you inherit?"
"Because I was a woman."
I stared.
"That's it?"
"That was enough."
She smiled bitterly.
"Your grandfather believed the company should pass through the male line."
"So he gave everything to my grandmother?"
"Not everything."
She walked toward the desk.
"He gave her the public fortune."
"What about you?"
"I received nothing."
"Then why didn't you fight?"
"I did."
"And?"
"Your grandmother offered me a deal."
I looked at her.
"What deal?"
"She would secretly transfer the original land rights to me."
My heart stopped.
"But she didn't."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because she changed her mind."
"Why?"
Victoria's expression hardened.
"Because she fell in love with power."
She opened a drawer.
Inside were dozens of letters.
I picked up the first.
It was from my grandmother.
I read it.
Victoria,
I cannot give you the land. Michael has discovered our agreement.
My hands trembled.
Another letter.
If I transfer the shares, he will expose us.
Another.
I'm sorry.
I looked at Victoria.
"So you hated her."
"I loved her."
"Then why destroy my family?"
"Because she destroyed mine first."
I shook my head.
"You destroyed my father."
"No."
She looked directly at me.
"Your grandmother did."
I froze.
"What?"
Victoria pulled out another document.
It was a transfer agreement.
Signed by my grandmother.
The original Moretti land rights.
Transferred to a company I didn't recognize.
I looked at the date.
Three days before my grandmother died.
"She sold the land."
"Yes."
"To whom?"
Victoria smiled.
"Your father."
I stared.
"What?"
"Your father bought it back."
I couldn't breathe.
"Then why did you say she sold it to you?"
"Because I wanted you to believe the war was about money."
"What was it really about?"
Victoria stepped closer.
"Blood."
She placed another photograph on the table.
My father.
My grandmother.
And a man I didn't recognize.
I stared.
"Who is that?"
"Your grandfather."
"I've seen him."
"No."
Victoria shook her head.
"Not him."
She pointed to the third man.
"Your father's real father."
My stomach dropped.
"My father wasn't a Hale?"
"Not entirely."
I couldn't speak.
"Your grandfather adopted Michael."
"Why?"
"Because your grandmother had an affair."
"With whom?"
Victoria looked at me.
"Thomas Whitmore."
I felt the room tilt.
"No."
"Yes."
"My grandmother had a child with Thomas?"
"No."
Victoria smiled coldly.
"She had your father."
I stepped backward.
"No."
"Your father was born a Moretti."
I shook my head.
"Then why Hale?"
"Because your grandfather took him."
"Why?"
"To protect the family name."
I stared at the photograph.
My entire family tree had just become a lie.
My father wasn't simply a Hale.
He was Moretti blood.
And Thomas Whitmore was his biological father.
That meant...
I looked at Victoria.
"Preston."
She nodded.
"Now you understand."
My heart pounded.
"Preston is Thomas's grandson."
"Yes."
"And my father's son."
"Yes."
I felt sick.
"So Preston and I..."
She smiled.
"You share Moretti blood."
I backed away.
"That can't be."
"It is."
"But we're not related through my mother."
"Blood doesn't care which side it comes from."
I looked at the door.
I needed air.
I needed to leave.
I needed to wake up.
But Victoria wasn't finished.
"There is one more thing."
I turned.
"Your mother knew."
I froze.
"She knew Preston was Michael's son."
"Yes."
"Before I married him?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't she stop it?"
Victoria's answer was quiet.
"Because she was the one who asked your father to make the marriage happen."
I couldn't speak.
"My mother arranged my marriage?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To keep you under protection."
"Protection?"
"She knew Victoria would come for you."
"You are Victoria."
She smiled.
"I wasn't the only threat."
"Who else?"
She looked toward the window.
"The family."
I stared.
"What family?"
"The Hale family."
I frowned.
"My own family?"
"Yes."
"Why would they want me dead?"
"Because your father left you something they couldn't control."
"The company."
"No."
She shook her head.
"Something more dangerous."
"What?"
"Proof."
My phone vibrated.
A video message.
From my mother.
I opened it.
She was sitting somewhere dark.
Her face was bruised.
My blood froze.
"Mom?"
Her voice trembled.
"Elena, don't trust Victoria."
Victoria laughed softly.
My mother continued.
"She will tell you everything except the truth."
I looked at Victoria.
She wasn't smiling anymore.
My mother's voice broke.
"The fire wasn't staged the way I told you."
My heart stopped.
"There was someone else in the car."
I remembered the message.
ASK HER WHO WAS IN THE CAR.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
"I was."
I froze.
"Your father wasn't supposed to be there."
"What?"
"He changed the plan."
My mother's eyes filled with tears.
"He knew someone was coming for him."
"Who?"
"He thought it was Victoria."
She shook her head.
"It wasn't."
"Who was it?"
My mother whispered:
"Thomas."
Victoria's face changed.
My mother continued.
"Thomas came to kill Michael."
"But the car..."
"The body was already inside."
I couldn't breathe.
"Whose body?"
My mother looked down.
Then whispered:
"Your uncle."
I closed my eyes.
Everything was becoming a circle.
The Whitmores.
The Hales.
The Morettis.
Deaths.
Fake deaths.
Stolen identities.
Hidden children.
Secret marriages.
And now...
my own mother had been involved in all of it.
The video ended.
I looked at Victoria.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I wanted you to come here."
"Why?"
She pointed toward the floor.
"Because the original agreement is beneath us."
I stared.
"The real one."
She nodded.
"The one your father hid."
"Where?"
"Under this tower."
"Then let's get it."
Victoria smiled.
"We will."
The elevator descended.
Below the tower.
Past the parking levels.
Past the foundations.
Far beneath the city.
The doors opened into an enormous underground chamber.
I stopped.
The walls were covered with old stone.
At the center stood a circular table.
Three chairs.
Three family crests.
Hale.
Moretti.
Whitmore.
And one empty fourth chair.
I looked at Victoria.
"What's the fourth?"
She didn't answer.
I walked toward it.
There was a name carved into the metal.
ELENA.
I froze.
My father had designed this room for me.
Victoria approached.
"Sit."
I didn't.
"Where is Sophie?"
"Behind the next door."
"Open it."
"After you sign."
I looked at the table.
A document appeared.
The original agreement.
The real one.
I picked it up.
The first page confirmed everything.
The land belonged to the Moretti bloodline.
The operating companies belonged to the Hale descendants.
The Whitmores had management rights.
But there was one final clause.
I read it twice.
Then again.
My hands began shaking.
I looked at Victoria.
"This says if the three bloodlines merge..."
She smiled.
"The entire empire becomes one estate."
"Controlled by whom?"
She pointed at me.
"The youngest living descendant."
I stared.
"Me."
"No."
She smiled.
"Not you."
My stomach dropped.
"Then who?"
Victoria's eyes moved toward the door.
It opened.
Preston stepped inside.
I stared at him.
He looked at the document.
Then at me.
Victoria said:
"The youngest living descendant is your husband."
My heart stopped.
Preston's face went pale.
"No."
Victoria smiled.
"Yes."
I looked at Preston.
"You knew."
"I didn't."
"Then why are you here?"
He looked at me.
"I came because I found something."
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a folded paper.
"Elena."
"What?"
He handed it to me.
It was a birth certificate.
His.
Under "Father":
Michael Hale.
Under "Mother":
A name I had never seen.
I read it.
Maria Moretti.
I looked at Victoria.
She whispered:
"Your grandmother's sister."
I felt the world collapse.
Preston wasn't only my father's son.
He was Moretti blood.
Which meant the final inheritance could pass through him.
Victoria had brought me here to force me to surrender control.
But then Preston stepped closer.
He looked at me.
And said:
"I found out the truth."
"What truth?"
His voice broke.
"The account with your name on it isn't your inheritance."
I stared.
"What is it?"
"Your father's trap."
"Trap for whom?"
He looked at Victoria.
"Everyone."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Preston continued.
"The money is bait."
"The account is bait?"
"Yes."
"Then what did my father really leave me?"
Preston looked at the fourth chair.
"The authority to expose every person who stole from your family."
Victoria stepped backward.
"Stop."
Preston ignored her.
"Your father didn't build the account to make you rich."
He looked at me.
"He built it so that when you activated it..."
A series of screens came alive around the chamber.
Hundreds of names appeared.
Judges.
Bankers.
Executives.
Politicians.
Whitmore allies.
Hale relatives.
And one name at the very top.
THOMAS WHITMORE.
Beneath it:
VICTORIA MORETTI.
Then:
SARAH HALE.
My mother's name.
I stopped breathing.
My mother.
On the list.
I looked at Victoria.
Then at Preston.
"Why is my mother's name there?"
Nobody answered.
The lights flickered.
A voice came from the speakers.
My father's voice.
Calm.
Final.
"If you are hearing this, Elena, then you have reached the truth."
I closed my eyes.
"Your mother betrayed me."
My heart shattered.
"Not because she wanted money."
The screen showed my mother.
"Because she believed she was saving you."
Then another image appeared.
A photograph of my mother meeting Thomas Whitmore.
And another.
My mother handing him a sealed envelope.
My father continued:
"She gave Thomas one thing."
A pause.
"My location."
I stared at the screen.
My mother had betrayed my father.
Not for money.
Not for power.
But because she had believed Thomas could protect me.
And that betrayal had started the chain of events that destroyed our family.
Then my father's final words filled the chamber:
"And if you want to know why she did it..."
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
My mother holding a newborn baby.
Not me.
Not Sophie.
A little boy.
I stared.
My father's voice whispered:
"Ask your mother about the son she gave away."
The screen went black.
I turned slowly toward Victoria.
She was crying.
And for the first time since I had met her...
she looked genuinely afraid.
"Elena," she whispered.
I stared at her.
"Who was that baby?"
She didn't answer.
I looked at Preston.
His face had gone completely white.
Then Daniel appeared in the doorway.
He looked at the photograph.
And whispered:
"That's impossible."
I turned.
"Why?"
Daniel stared at Preston.
"Because that child..."
May you like
He swallowed.
"...was supposed to be me."
