CHAPTER 12 — THE SON WHO DIDN'T KNOW

CHAPTER 12 — THE SON WHO DIDN'T KNOW

The name on the birth record was Evelyn Mercer.

Not Evelyn Whitmore.

Not even Evelyn Black.

Just Evelyn Mercer.

A name that had disappeared from every official document after she married Daniel's grandfather.

I stared at Detective Harper's message until the words blurred.

Then I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?”

“They found Evelyn's original birth record.”

A pause.

“And?”

“She wasn't born a Whitmore.”

“I know.”

“No, Daniel. You don't understand.”

I swallowed.

“Her name was Evelyn Mercer.”

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Where are you?”

“At the police station.”

“I'll be there.”

Twenty minutes later, Daniel walked into the room with Nathan and Rose.

Anna came behind them.

She looked exhausted.

But when she heard the name, she stopped.

“Mercer.”

I looked at her.

“You know it?”

Anna nodded slowly.

“My father used to mention that name.”

Daniel frowned.

“What did he say?”

Anna sat down.

“He said the Whitmores had a rival family.”

“Who?”

“The Mercers.”

Harper placed another file on the table.

“The Mercer family owned a shipping company along the Charleston coast in the 1960s.”

“Were they wealthy?”

“Extremely.”

“What happened to them?”

Harper opened the file.

“Most of the family died in a house fire.”

Daniel stared.

“When?”

“1968.”

Anna's face went pale.

“That can't be.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn was alive.”

Harper nodded.

“She was fourteen.”

Daniel looked at me.

“So she survived the fire.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Harper turned another page.

“That's the question.”

The Mercer house had burned to the ground.

Officially, the fire had started in the kitchen.

Seven people died.

Only one child survived.

A fourteen-year-old girl named Eleanor Mercer.

Not Evelyn.

Eleanor.

Daniel stared at the document.

“Eleanor.”

Harper nodded.

“She changed her name later.”

“Why?”

“We don't know.”

Anna whispered:

“I do.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Her father had been investigating the Whitmores.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“Again?”

“Yes.”

Anna looked at me.

“The Whitmores and Mercers had been fighting over land.”

“Your father knew about it?”

“My father knew everything.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What happened to Eleanor?”

“She blamed the Whitmores.”

“And then?”

“She became obsessed with destroying them.”

Harper added:

“Or taking control of them.”

A second file appeared.

It contained newspaper clippings.

The first was dated 1968.

MERCER FAMILY KILLED IN DEVASTATING HOUSE FIRE.

The second was dated 1971.

LOCAL WOMAN MARRIES INTO PROMINENT WHITMORE FAMILY.

The photograph showed a much younger Evelyn.

She looked almost unrecognizable.

But the eyes were the same.

Cold.

Focused.

Unforgiving.

Daniel stared.

“She married the family she blamed for killing hers.”

Harper nodded.

“That's what the evidence suggests.”

I looked at Anna.

“Did she ever tell anyone?”

“No.”

“Then why did she stay?”

Anna's answer was quiet.

“To destroy them from inside.”

Nathan suddenly spoke.

“So everything she did…”

He stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“She wasn't trying to build the Whitmore family.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“She was trying to replace it.”

Harper nodded.

“Exactly.”

Nathan looked at the files.

“She killed the old generation.”

“She manipulated the next.”

“She controlled the children.”

“And then she made everyone believe they owed their lives to her.”

Rose whispered:

“She turned the family into prisoners.”

Anna nodded.

“And she made them fight each other so no one would ever unite against her.”

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Dad knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew who she really was.”

“Yes.”

“And he tried to stop her.”

“Yes.”

Nathan's expression changed.

“But why did he protect me?”

Anna looked at him.

“Because you were the only child who could expose her.”

Nathan frowned.

“How?”

“Your blood.”

He looked confused.

“Your blood?”

Anna nodded.

“You are the biological son of Edward Whitmore.”

Nathan stared.

“We already established that.”

“No.”

Anna's voice trembled.

“You misunderstood.”

She looked at Daniel.

“Edward was not your father.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Anna looked at Nathan.

“Edward was his.”

She pointed to Daniel.

“Your father was Leonard.”

Daniel's face went blank.

“And Nathan…”

She turned back.

“…was Edward's son.”

Silence.

Nathan slowly sat down.

“So Daniel and I…”

“Half-brothers.”

Daniel stared at him.

Nathan looked equally stunned.

“All these years…”

“You thought you were my brother.”

“I am your brother.”

Nathan's voice cracked.

“But not the way we thought.”

Daniel reached for him.

Nathan pulled away.

“I need a minute.”

He walked out.

Daniel watched him leave.

Then he looked at Anna.

“Why did you lie?”

“I didn't.”

“You knew.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“That excuse again.”

Anna lowered her head.

“I was afraid.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was afraid.”

He stood.

“And because everyone was afraid, nobody told the truth.”

I followed Nathan outside.

He stood beneath a large oak tree.

His hands were shaking.

“You okay?”

“No.”

I stood beside him.

“My entire identity is a lie.”

“You're still Nathan.”

“That doesn't mean anything.”

“It means everything.”

He looked at me.

“Do you know what it's like to discover that the man you thought was your father wasn't your father?”

I didn't answer.

He continued.

“Then to discover the man who was your father died because he tried to protect you?”

“I can imagine.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“You can't.”

I looked away.

He was right.

“I spent twenty-eight years believing nobody wanted me.”

He wiped his eyes.

“Now I find out someone did.”

I touched his shoulder.

“Your father did.”

Nathan nodded.

“Then why did he let me disappear?”

“Maybe because he thought it was the only way to keep you alive.”

Nathan looked toward the station.

“And what about Daniel?”

“He lost a father too.”

“But he had him.”

“Not really.”

Nathan looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

“Daniel spent his whole life believing Edward abandoned him emotionally.”

I swallowed.

“Now he has to live with the knowledge that Edward sacrificed himself.”

Nathan looked down.

“Neither of us got the father we deserved.”

“No.”

“But we got each other.”

I smiled.

“Maybe that's what Edward wanted.”

Inside, Daniel was reading another document.

Harper stood over his shoulder.

“What is it?”

He didn't answer.

I walked closer.

It was a hospital record.

PATIENT: EDWARD WHITMORE

DATE: TWO DAYS BEFORE DEATH

DIAGNOSIS: SEVERE POISONING.

Daniel stared.

“He was poisoned before he died.”

Harper nodded.

“The official report was falsified.”

“Who signed it?”

Harper pointed to the bottom.

DR. SAMUEL MERCER.

Daniel looked up.

“Evelyn's father.”

Harper nodded.

“He was still alive then.”

Anna whispered:

“That means the fire wasn't the beginning.”

“No,” Harper said.

“It was the middle.”

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man's voice spoke.

Daniel's face changed.

“Who is this?”

The voice replied:

“Someone who knew your father.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere your grandmother can't reach.”

Daniel looked at Harper.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to know the truth.”

“Tell me.”

A pause.

“You've been looking for the wrong son.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The boy Evelyn wanted to erase wasn't Nathan.”

Daniel went still.

“Then who?”

“You.”

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Harper immediately began tracing it.

“Give me a minute.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Why me?”

I didn't know.

Then Anna whispered:

“Because Edward's real secret wasn't Nathan.”

Daniel turned.

“What was it?”

Anna shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“You have to.”

“I never knew.”

Harper's phone beeped.

She looked at the screen.

“We have a location.”

“Where?”

She looked up.

“The old Whitmore chapel.”

We drove there in silence.

The chapel stood beyond the marsh.

Abandoned.

Its windows were broken.

The wooden cross had fallen.

Daniel pushed open the door.

Dust covered the pews.

At the altar sat a small box.

Daniel approached it.

His name was written on top.

FOR DANIEL.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Edward.

Daniel.

Nathan.

And a woman.

I didn't recognize her.

Daniel did.

“That's Dr. Mercer.”

Evelyn's father.

Behind them was a newborn baby.

Daniel turned the photograph over.

There was a message.

One of these boys is mine.

Daniel stared.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Then he found another photograph.

The same three men.

But this time, the baby was older.

A toddler.

On the back:

The wrong child was taken.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

A third photograph.

A woman holding a baby.

Anna.

Beside her stood Evelyn.

And beneath the photograph was one sentence:

Evelyn stole the child she wanted.

Anna covered her mouth.

“No.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

She stared at the photograph.

“That was the night you were born.”

The chapel seemed to disappear around us.

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

“That's me?”

Anna nodded.

“You were born at the Mercer clinic.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn controlled the doctor.”

Daniel stared.

“So she took me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Anna began crying.

“Because she believed you were Edward's son.”

“But I am.”

Anna shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“You aren't Edward's biological son.”

Everyone froze.

Nathan stared at her.

“Then who is?”

Anna looked at Daniel.

“Your father was Samuel Mercer.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn's father.

The man who had died in the fire.

The man who had supposedly never met Anna.

Daniel shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

Anna cried.

“I was young.”

“Before Edward?”

“Yes.”

“Samuel was married.”

“I know.”

“And Evelyn?”

“I didn't know she existed.”

Daniel backed away.

“So I'm…”

“A Mercer.”

He stared at the photograph.

“The Whitmore family took me.”

“Yes.”

“Evelyn thought I was her father's child.”

“Yes.”

“And that's why she protected me.”

Anna nodded.

“She wanted to control you.”

Daniel whispered:

“She wasn't trying to destroy the Whitmores.”

“She was trying to create a Mercer heir.”

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“So I'm the Whitmore.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And you're the Mercer.”

Nathan laughed.

A broken, disbelieving laugh.

“All our lives…”

“We were switched.”

Rose looked at Anna.

“Why?”

Anna answered:

“Because the night you were born, two babies were delivered.”

“Daniel.”

“And another child.”

“Evelyn's grandson.”

Nathan frowned.

“Who?”

Anna looked toward the chapel door.

A shadow stood there.

An old man.

He stepped inside.

Daniel immediately recognized him.

“Dr. Mercer.”

The man smiled.

“Not anymore.”

He removed his coat.

“I've been waiting thirty years for someone to discover the truth.”

Daniel stared.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let everyone believe you died.”

“I had to.”

“Why?”

He looked at Evelyn's photograph.

“Because my daughter killed everyone who knew the truth.”

Anna whispered:

“Eleanor.”

He nodded.

“Evelyn.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell me everything.”

Dr. Mercer sighed.

“The original tragedy began the night your grandmother's family burned.”

He looked at Nathan.

“And it ended when the wrong baby was taken.”

Then he looked at me.

“But there is one thing none of you know.”

I frowned.

“What?”

He pointed toward the chapel floor.

“Your father hid the final evidence beneath this church.”

Daniel looked down.

“Edward?”

“No.”

Dr. Mercer shook his head.

“Your father.”

He looked at me.

“Michael Ellis.”

My heart stopped.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“He knew everything.”

“How?”

“Because he was there the night the babies were switched.”

Daniel stared.

“What babies?”

Dr. Mercer smiled sadly.

“Yours.”

He pointed at Daniel.

“And Nathan's.”

Then he added:

“And the third child.”

Everyone froze.

Rose whispered:

“Third?”

Dr. Mercer nodded.

“There were three babies that night.”

A floorboard creaked beneath us.

He looked down.

“The third child was the one Evelyn was really searching for.”

Daniel's voice was barely audible.

“Who was it?”

Dr. Mercer looked directly at me.

“You.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

He whispered:

“You were never Michael Ellis's biological daughter.”

The chapel fell silent.

“You were the missing Mercer child.”

And suddenly, every photograph, every file, every lie, and every tragedy began to make sense.

Because Evelyn hadn't been watching me for years because I was connected to Daniel.

She had been watching me because I was the last living person who could prove that she had stolen an entire family.

And now she knew we had found out.

The chapel doors slammed shut.

From outside came the sound of a car.

Then a woman's voice echoed through the darkness.

Evelyn.

“You finally understand.”

Daniel turned toward the door.

Her voice continued.

“But you're still missing one piece.”

A pause.

“The child I stole wasn't the only child I took.”

May you like

Then the lights went out.

And somewhere beneath our feet, something began knocking from inside the floor.
