Chapter 1: The Camera Never Blinked
The ambulance doors closed behind Sophie as paramedics rushed her to the hospital.
Evelyn refused to leave until she knew her daughter would recover. The doctors assured her that the deep cut required stitches, but the CT scan showed no life-threatening injury.
Only then did she return to the Whitmore Hotel.
The ballroom was nearly empty.
Police officers were interviewing guests while Preston paced angrily beside his attorney.
"There isn't any proof," Preston insisted. "The girl stole my phone. I reacted."
The hotel's Head of Security entered carrying a laptop.
"There is proof."
Every eye turned toward the giant ballroom screen.
The footage began twenty minutes before the incident.
Guests watched Preston glance around the room, remove his phone from his own pocket, and quietly slip it into the pocket of Sophie's tiny denim jacket while she was dancing with the flower girls several feet away.
Gasps echoed through the ballroom.
The next recording showed Preston loudly announcing that his phone had been stolen.
Then came the search.
Then the false accusation.
Finally, the last camera angle captured Preston lifting the heavy oak menu board and striking an eight-year-old child who had never once touched his phone.
The room fell silent.
A police officer paused the video.
"You planted the evidence."
Preston's face turned pale.

His attorney slowly closed his briefcase.
For the first time in thirty years, there was no excuse powerful enough to erase what everyone had just seen.
