Chapter 2: The Family That Chose the Wrong Side

Richard Bennett stepped forward.

"There has to be some misunderstanding."

The officer looked directly at him.

"Sir, we have footage from four different security cameras."

Carolyn grabbed Evelyn's arm.

"Please... don't destroy your brother's future."

Evelyn gently pulled away.

"My daughter's future almost ended tonight."

Madison, still wearing her wedding gown, stared at Preston in disbelief.

"You told me she stole from you."

"I..."

"You lied."

Her voice echoed through the empty ballroom.

"You let everyone believe a child was a thief."

"And then you hit her."

She quietly removed her wedding ring.

"I can't stay married to someone capable of this."

Without another word, she walked away.

Richard lowered his head.

For decades he had defended Preston's every mistake.

Bad grades.

Debt.

Lies.

Broken promises.

Each time he blamed someone else.

Usually Evelyn.

Tonight there was no one left to blame.

The police placed Preston under arrest on charges including assault on a minor, filing a false report, and evidence tampering.

As he was escorted away, he shouted toward his parents.

"Do something!"

Neither of them moved.

They finally understood the painful truth.

They had not protected their son.

They had enabled him.
