Chapter 7 — The Night Lily Disappeared

Chapter 7 — The Night Lily Disappeared

The school auditorium was full of parents.

That was what made Adrian nervous.

Too many people.

Too many exits.

Too many strangers.

Too many opportunities for someone to disappear into a crowd.

He had spent the entire afternoon telling himself he was being paranoid.

Then Lily walked onto the stage.

And everything else stopped mattering.

She wore a white dress with a small silver ribbon in her hair.

Her hands were clasped behind her back.

She looked terrified.

Sarah sat beside Adrian.

“You're staring.”

“I know.”

“She can see you.”

“I know.”

“Try smiling.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I am smiling.”

Sarah glanced at him.

“You look like you're preparing to execute someone.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“I don't know how to do this.”

“Do what?”

“Be a normal father.”

Sarah's expression softened.

“You're trying.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

“That doesn't feel like enough.”

“It is for tonight.”

He nodded.

Then Lily saw him.

Her face changed.

The fear disappeared.

She smiled.

And Adrian realized something.

She wasn't looking at the crowd.

She was looking at him.

The performance lasted twenty-three minutes.

Adrian counted every one.

Lily sang two lines.

Forgot the third.

Looked toward the audience.

Found him.

Then continued.

When the performance ended, the parents applauded.

Adrian stood immediately.

He didn't care who was watching.

Lily ran off the stage.

“Daddy!”

He caught her.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

“You came.”

“I promised.”

“You didn't leave.”

“No.”

She pulled back.

“Did you like it?”

Adrian smiled.

“You were perfect.”

“I forgot my words.”

“Perfect people forget words.”

Sarah laughed.

“That is definitely not true.”

Lily hugged her.

“I want ice cream.”

Adrian looked at Sarah.

“Then we're getting ice cream.”

For five minutes, everything felt normal.

Then Adrian noticed Vincent standing near the back entrance.

His expression was wrong.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“Stay with Lily.”

Sarah looked at him.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“Adrian.”

He lowered his voice.

“Don't leave the building.”

Sarah understood immediately.

She took Lily's hand.

Adrian walked toward Vincent.

“What?”

“Two men outside.”

“Volkov?”

“Possibly.”

“Where?”

“North parking lot.”

“Do they have weapons?”

“Unknown.”

“Where's our security?”

“Every entrance.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Then why are you worried?”

Vincent looked toward the hallway.

“Because one of them has been inside.”

Adrian's heart stopped.

“What?”

“We found him on camera.”

“Where?”

“Near the children's dressing rooms.”

Adrian turned.

“Lily.”

He ran.

Not walked.

Ran.

Sarah was standing beside the dressing room.

Lily was gone.

Adrian stopped.

“Where is she?”

Sarah's face was white.

“She was here.”

“Where?”

“Right here.”

“Who had her?”

“No one.”

“Sarah.”

“I turned around for five seconds.”

Adrian's breathing became uneven.

“Where is my daughter?”

“I don't know.”

The words broke something inside him.

He looked around.

Children.

Parents.

Teachers.

Noise.

Laughter.

But Lily was gone.

His daughter was gone.

“Lock the building.”

Vincent immediately spoke into his radio.

“No one leaves.”

Adrian grabbed the nearest security guard.

“Show me the cameras.”

The man led him into the control room.

Adrian stared at the monitors.

Hallway.

Stage.

Lobby.

Parking lot.

Nothing.

Then—

camera six.

Lily walking down the hallway.

Alone.

Adrian froze.

“Why is she alone?”

The security guard shook his head.

“She shouldn't be.”

Lily stopped near a side door.

Someone stepped into frame.

A woman.

Black coat.

Hat.

She crouched.

Said something.

Lily looked up.

Then took her hand.

Adrian's blood ran cold.

“Who is that?”

“We don't know.”

“Zoom.”

The image sharpened.

The woman turned slightly.

Adrian recognized her.

“Isabella.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Who are you?”

A man's voice replied.

“You're finally paying attention.”

Adrian's blood went cold.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Safe.”

“Put her on.”

A pause.

Then Lily's voice.

“Daddy?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Lily.”

“I'm okay.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Is Mommy there?”

“No.”

Adrian's voice shook.

“Listen to me.”

“Okay.”

“Do exactly what they tell you.”

“Okay.”

“Daddy's coming.”

“Are you mad?”

“No.”

“Are you scared?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then Lily whispered:

“Me too.”

The line went dead.

Adrian stared at the phone.

Then the man called again.

“You have one hour.”

“One hour for what?”

“To bring us the file.”

“What file?”

“The one your father hid.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“You're not getting it.”

The man laughed.

“You'll change your mind.”

Sarah walked toward him.

“What happened?”

Adrian looked at her.

“They have her.”

Sarah's face collapsed.

“No.”

“I'll get her back.”

“Who?”

“Isabella was with them.”

Sarah stared.

“Isabella?”

“Yes.”

“She wouldn't.”

“She already did.”

Sarah shook her head.

“She protected us.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Did she?”

Sarah's expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

Adrian showed her the photograph.

Sarah stared.

“That isn't Isabella.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Sarah pointed at the screen.

“The woman.”

“That is Isabella.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I've seen her before.”

“Where?”

“At the hospital.”

Adrian stared.

“The faceless man?”

“No.”

Sarah's voice trembled.

“His wife.”

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“His wife?”

“The woman who stood beside him.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Sarah looked terrified.

“But she was there when Lily was born.”

Adrian turned to Vincent.

“Find her.”

Thirty minutes later, Vincent found the identity.

Mara Voss.

Former Moretti security operative.

Former employee of Richard Moretti.

And—

Dimitri Volkov's current security adviser.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“She worked for my father.”

“Yes.”

“She worked for Volkov.”

“Yes.”

“And she took Lily.”

“Yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Everything connected.

Richard.

Victor.

Crane.

Volkov.

Mara.

Lily.

The photograph.

The inheritance.

The secret.

His father had built something so dangerous that everyone around him was willing to kill for it.

And Lily was somehow connected to it.

The phone rang again.

Adrian answered.

“Where is she?”

“Twenty minutes.”

“Tell me where.”

“Bring the file to the old Moretti warehouse.”

“Which one?”

“You know.”

Adrian did.

The warehouse his father had owned before Adrian took control.

The building where Adrian had spent his childhood.

The place Richard had forbidden him to enter.

Adrian looked at Vincent.

“We're going.”

Sarah grabbed his arm.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“She is my daughter.”

“And I'm bringing her home.”

“You don't get to do this alone.”

Adrian looked at her.

She was crying.

“I lost three years with her.”

He softened.

“I know.”

“I won't lose another hour.”

Adrian nodded.

“Then stay behind me.”

The warehouse was dark.

Too dark.

Adrian entered first.

Vincent behind him.

Sarah followed.

“Lily!”

Silence.

Then a small voice.

“Daddy?”

Adrian's heart broke.

“Lily!”

He heard her crying.

“I'm here!”

The lights suddenly came on.

Lily sat in a chair.

Her hands were tied.

Mara Voss stood behind her.

A gun rested against Lily's shoulder.

Adrian stopped.

“Let her go.”

Mara smiled.

“You look like your father.”

“I'll take that as an insult.”

“You should.”

“Where is Volkov?”

“Not here.”

“Then who gave the order?”

Mara's smile disappeared.

“Your family.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Victor?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Mara looked at Lily.

“Your father.”

Adrian froze.

“Richard is dead.”

“His instructions aren't.”

“What did he hide?”

Mara smiled.

“Ask Lily.”

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“What does she know?”

Mara's expression changed.

“She remembers.”

Adrian stared.

“Remembers what?”

Mara stepped closer.

“When she was three, she saw something she wasn't supposed to see.”

Sarah whispered:

“What?”

Mara looked at her.

“She saw Richard's hidden room.”

Adrian's blood went cold.

“What room?”

“The room beneath the house.”

Adrian remembered.

A locked basement.

A door he had never been allowed to open.

He had assumed it contained money.

Weapons.

Documents.

He had never imagined Lily knew about it.

Mara continued.

“Your father left something there.”

“What?”

“Something that belongs to Lily.”

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“What?”

Lily's face was wet with tears.

“I don't know.”

Mara smiled.

“You do.”

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

Mara lifted the gun.

Adrian's voice became dangerously calm.

“Put it down.”

“Give me the file.”

“I don't have it.”

“You're lying.”

“No.”

Mara's finger tightened.

Then—

a gunshot.

The weapon flew from her hand.

Vincent had fired.

Mara screamed.

Adrian rushed forward.

He grabbed Lily.

“Daddy!”

He untied her.

She threw herself into his arms.

He held her so tightly she could barely breathe.

“I'm here.”

“You came.”

“I promised.”

She cried against his chest.

“I knew you would.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For the first time in his life, he understood what his daughter had been trying to tell him.

She hadn't needed a perfect father.

She had needed one who came when she called.

Mara was taken into custody.

But before she was removed, she laughed.

Adrian turned.

“What?”

She looked at him.

“You think this is over?”

“No.”

“You think rescuing her means you won?”

“No.”

Mara smiled.

“Then you're finally learning.”

She was dragged away.

Adrian looked at Lily.

She was safe.

But something had changed.

She no longer looked at the adults around her with innocent trust.

She looked at them as though she understood that everyone had secrets.

That night, back at the apartment, Lily couldn't sleep.

Adrian sat beside her bed.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Anything.”

“Was the bad lady looking for the picture?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know yet.”

Lily was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“I know where another picture is.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

“In the old house.”

“What old house?”

“Grandpa's house.”

Adrian's blood went cold.

“Richard's house?”

She nodded.

“There's a picture behind the wall.”

“What picture?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“The one where Grandpa is holding me.”

Adrian stared.

“Who told you?”

“No one.”

“Then how do you know?”

She opened her eyes.

“Because I saw it.”

“When?”

“When I was little.”

Adrian sat completely still.

“What else did you see?”

Lily looked toward the doorway.

Then whispered:

“There was a woman there.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“What did she look like?”

Lily thought.

“Like Mommy.”

Sarah, standing in the hallway, froze.

Adrian turned toward her.

Neither spoke.

Then Lily added:

“She was crying.”

Adrian's heart tightened.

“What did Grandpa say?”

Lily's voice became smaller.

“He said…”

She paused.

“‘If Adrian ever finds out, they'll kill all of us.’”

Adrian felt the blood leave his face.

His father had been afraid.

Not of Volkov.

Not of the police.

Not of Adrian.

He had been afraid of someone else.

Someone Lily had seen.

Someone who looked like Sarah.

And somewhere inside the old Moretti house was a photograph that could finally prove what had happened the night Lily was born.

Adrian stood.

“We're going back.”

Sarah looked at him.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

He looked at Lily.

Then at the darkness beyond the window.

May you like

Because rescuing his daughter had been only the beginning.

Now he had to discover why everyone who knew the truth had spent six years trying to keep Lily silent.
