CHAPTER 10: THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY ARTHUR

CHAPTER 10: THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY ARTHUR

The truth had always been Arthur Miller’s weapon.

For fifteen years, he had believed that.

Truth exposed criminals.

Truth protected innocent people.

Truth destroyed the lies powerful people built around themselves.

But Arthur had forgotten something important.

Truth was a weapon.

And every weapon could be turned against you.

The morning after the trial, the world woke up to a different headline.

Not about Richard.

Not about Lily.

About Arthur.

“WHO IS ALEXANDER VALE? THE MAN BEHIND THE WHITMORE CASE HIDES A DARK PAST.”

Arthur read the article in silence.

He already knew.

Before he even opened it.

Because only one person had access to the information.

Only one person knew enough details.

The person who had betrayed him fifteen years ago.

Lily found him sitting alone.

Again.

She hated seeing him like that.

Not because he looked weak.

Because he looked like someone carrying a weight nobody else could see.

“Dad.”

Arthur looked up.

She held a tablet.

“You saw?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily looked at the article.

“They are saying you operated outside the law.”

Arthur didn't answer.

“Is it true?”

The question was not accusing.

It was honest.

And that made it harder.

Arthur leaned back.

“Yes.”

Lily froze slightly.

“What?”

“There were times…”

He chose his words carefully.

“There were situations where normal systems failed.”

A pause.

“And I made decisions.”

Lily looked at him.

“Dangerous decisions?”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised her.

Because Richard would have denied everything.

Arthur didn't.

For years, Alexander Vale had been a name spoken quietly.

Not because he was a criminal.

Because he was effective.

When corporations hid evidence.

When powerful people controlled investigations.

When victims had no chance against billion-dollar legal teams…

Arthur created another path.

A path outside traditional systems.

Some people called him a protector.

Others called him dangerous.

The truth was somewhere between.

Arthur had never been perfect.

He knew that.

But he had always believed his purpose was right.

The media did not care about the details.

They cared about the question.

Can a man who broke rules be trusted to expose someone else?

And Richard understood exactly how powerful that question was.

He watched the news from his mansion.

For the first time in weeks…

He laughed.

Not loudly.

Not happily.

A quiet laugh.

Because Arthur was finally experiencing what Lily had experienced.

Being questioned.

Being doubted.

Being forced to defend yourself.

Richard poured a drink.

“Everyone has a weakness.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Are you sure this works?”

Richard looked at him.

“Of course.”

A pause.

“It worked on Lily.”

But Richard made one mistake.

He compared Arthur to himself.

He thought Arthur would hide.

Lie.

Manipulate.

Deny.

Because that was what Richard would do.

He did not understand that Arthur had survived because he accepted his own flaws.

The next day, Arthur did something nobody expected.

He called a press conference.

Not his lawyers.

Not his team.

Him.

The man everyone was questioning.

The room was packed.

Reporters waited.

Expecting excuses.

Instead, Arthur walked to the microphone and said:

“My name is Arthur Miller.”

A pause.

“I was once known as Alexander Vale.”

The room became silent.

“I will not pretend my past is simple.”

Cameras flashed.

“I made choices people disagreed with.”

Another pause.

“Some were necessary.”

“Some were mistakes.”

The reporters looked surprised.

Because powerful people rarely admitted mistakes.

Arthur continued.

“But there is one thing I never did.”

He looked directly into the cameras.

“I never protected the guilty.”

The questions came immediately.

“Mr. Miller, did you operate illegally?”

“Did you manipulate investigations?”

“Do you believe you are above the law?”

Arthur waited.

Then answered:

“No.”

A pause.

“I believe nobody should be above the law.”

The reporter continued.

“Then why did you create a secret organization?”

Arthur looked toward the crowd.

“Because there were people who believed money made them untouchable.”

A pause.

“And I wanted them to understand they were wrong.”

The press conference changed public opinion.

Not completely.

But enough.

Because people expected a villain.

They saw a man.

A flawed one.

But honest.

And honesty was something Richard could never imitate.

That evening, Lily found Arthur outside.

“You knew they would attack you.”

“Yes.”

“You knew people would doubt you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you tell the truth?”

Arthur looked at the sky.

“Because your entire life was destroyed by someone else's lies.”

A pause.

“I won't save you by becoming another liar.”

Those words stayed with her.

But the truth Arthur revealed created another problem.

His enemies became desperate.

And desperate people did dangerous things.

That night, Elena arrived with information.

Her face was pale.

“We found the source.”

Arthur looked up.

“The leak?”

She nodded.

“Not Richard.”

Arthur's expression changed.

“Who?”

Elena placed a document on the table.

A name.

Arthur stared.

Because he already knew.

His hands tightened.

“No.”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“It was him.”

The betrayal finally had a face.

Marcus Reed.

Arthur’s closest friend.

His second-in-command.

The man who stood beside him during every investigation.

The man who knew everything.

Where Arthur hid evidence.

How his organization worked.

Where his weaknesses were.

And most importantly…

The man who knew about Emily.

Lily saw her father’s expression.

“Dad?”

Arthur didn't answer.

She touched his arm.

“Who is he?”

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“He was my brother.”

Not by blood.

By choice.

A person Arthur trusted more than anyone.

A person who knew the real Arthur.

Fifteen years earlier.

When Arthur investigated Whitmore, Marcus had been beside him.

They discovered the truth.

They prepared the evidence.

They were ready to expose Edward Whitmore.

Then everything collapsed.

Files disappeared.

Witnesses vanished.

The investigation failed.

And Emily died.

Arthur always believed Edward was responsible.

But now…

The truth was worse.

Someone close helped him.

Marcus appeared on television that night.

Not hiding.

Not running.

He gave an interview.

And he told the world:

“Alexander Vale was never a hero.”

A pause.

“He was a man who believed he could decide justice by himself.”

The interviewer asked:

“Are you saying Mr. Miller is dangerous?”

Marcus looked into the camera.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“The most dangerous people are not criminals.”

“They are people who believe they are right.”

Arthur watched the interview silently.

Lily looked at him.

“Is he telling the truth?”

Arthur answered honestly.

“Partly.”

That surprised her.

“Partly?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I did believe I was right.”

“Were you?”

Arthur looked down.

“Sometimes.”

For the first time, Lily saw something important.

Her father was not a perfect hero.

He was a man.

A man who made choices.

A man who carried regrets.

A man who still chose to protect others.

And that mattered more.

But Marcus was not finished.

The next message arrived at midnight.

From Marcus himself.

One sentence.

You want the truth about Emily?

Arthur stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Come alone.

A location followed.

An abandoned building.

The same place where the original Whitmore investigation had begun fifteen years ago.

Elena immediately objected.

“It’s a trap.”

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then don't go.”

Arthur looked at Lily.

Then at the message.

“I need answers.”

Lily stepped forward.

“Dad.”

He looked at her.

“Don't do this alone.”

Arthur shook his head.

“This is my past.”

She held his hand.

“And I’m your present.”

The words stopped him.

Because she was right.

He spent fifteen years protecting Lily from his world.

But maybe protecting her also meant letting her stand beside him.

At midnight, Arthur arrived at the abandoned building.

Alone.

At least…

That was what Marcus thought.

Inside, a figure waited in the darkness.

Arthur walked forward.

“Marcus.”

A voice answered.

“You came.”

Arthur stopped.

“Tell me the truth.”

A long silence.

Then Marcus stepped into the light.

Older.

Tired.

But still the same man.

The man Arthur once trusted.

“You really want to know?”

Arthur stared at him.

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Then you need to know something.”

A pause.

“Emily did not die because of Edward Whitmore.”

Arthur froze.

The world became silent.

Marcus whispered:

May you like

“She died because of me.”
