CHAPTER 13: THE LAST ENEMY

CHAPTER 13: THE LAST ENEMY

Richard Whitmore had spent his entire life believing he was the player.

The one making decisions.

The one moving pieces across the board.

The one who controlled the outcome before anyone else even knew there was a game.

But every powerful person eventually learns the same lesson.

The most dangerous position in any game…

Was believing you were in control.

The message on Arthur’s phone remained unchanged.

THE REAL WHITMORE EMPIRE IS NOT DEAD.

IT HAS ONLY CHANGED OWNERS.

Arthur read it again.

Then again.

Elena watched his face.

“You know something.”

Arthur did not answer.

“Arthur.”

He placed the phone down.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Arthur looked at the files spread across the table.

“The person Edward Whitmore trusted more than anyone.”

A pause.

“The person who knew where every secret was buried.”

Lily stepped closer.

“Who is it?”

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“Someone who was never supposed to be found.”

For years, everyone believed Edward Whitmore was the center of the empire.

The architect.

The monster.

The man who built everything.

But Arthur had made one mistake.

He assumed Edward wanted to be the king.

He never considered that Edward wanted to create a system where the king could be replaced.

A true empire did not depend on one person.

It depended on survival.

Elena opened the old Whitmore files.

“We missed something.”

Arthur looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed to the documents.

“All these years, we focused on Edward.”

A pause.

“But every major decision…”

She traced the records.

“Someone else approved them.”

Arthur leaned closer.

A pattern appeared.

Transactions.

Companies.

Hidden accounts.

Every path led to the same place.

A name that appeared nowhere publicly.

A person without a photograph.

Without interviews.

Without a history.

Lily looked confused.

“Who hides this much?”

Arthur answered quietly.

“Someone who doesn't need anyone to know they exist.”

The name was revealed in an old document.

Victor Whitmore.

Richard’s uncle.

Edward’s younger brother.

A man everyone believed died decades ago.

But the records showed something impossible.

Victor was alive.

And he had been managing the hidden side of the Whitmore empire for years.

Richard received the same information.

But unlike Arthur…

He was not prepared.

Because Victor was not a stranger.

He was the person who raised him.

The person who taught him business.

The person who told him the Whitmore name meant power.

Richard had always believed his father shaped him.

He was wrong.

His uncle had been watching.

Guiding.

Preparing.

Richard met Victor in an underground office beneath an abandoned building.

The room was simple.

No luxury.

No decorations.

Only information.

Screens.

Files.

Records.

Richard looked around.

“You built this?”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

A pause.

“I maintained it.”

Richard stared at him.

“All these years…”

“Yes.”

“You were behind everything?”

Victor walked toward the table.

“Not everything.”

He placed a file down.

“But enough.”

Richard opened the file.

Inside were decades of operations.

Companies.

Politicians.

Manipulations.

And his own name.

Richard froze.

“What is this?”

Victor smiled.

“Your education.”

“My education?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You thought I was teaching you how to run a company.”

Victor looked at him.

“I was teaching you how to control people.”

Richard stepped back.

“You used me.”

Victor laughed softly.

“No.”

“I prepared you.”

“For what?”

Victor looked at him.

“To become exactly what the Whitmore family needed.”

Richard stared.

“You knew everything I did.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Lily.”

“Yes.”

The answer was so calm that Richard became angry.

“You knew?”

Victor looked at him.

“Of course.”

A pause.

“Did you think your mistakes happened without consequences?”

Richard’s face changed.

Because suddenly he understood.

The silence.

The protection.

The lack of punishment.

The way his family always covered for him.

It wasn't because they loved him.

It was because he was useful.

“You let me destroy myself.”

Victor nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor looked at him.

“Because people reveal themselves when they believe they are powerful.”

Meanwhile, Arthur discovered something even worse.

Victor wasn't just controlling Richard.

He had been controlling the investigation fifteen years ago.

Including Marcus.

Including the events surrounding Emily.

Arthur confronted Marcus again.

This time, Marcus was different.

Defeated.

“You knew about Victor.”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

Arthur’s voice became colder.

“And you never told me.”

Marcus swallowed.

“I was afraid.”

Arthur laughed quietly.

“Everyone was afraid.”

A pause.

“That was his greatest weapon.”

Marcus revealed the final truth.

Edward Whitmore had not ordered Emily’s death.

Victor had.

Because Edward wanted money.

Control.

Influence.

But Victor wanted something else.

A world where powerful people were never questioned.

Emily discovered the network.

She discovered Victor.

And she was going to expose him.

So Victor removed the threat.

Lily listened in silence.

Then asked:

“Why didn't you tell Dad?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Because Arthur would have destroyed himself trying to find him.”

A pause.

“And I thought keeping the truth hidden protected him.”

Arthur looked at Marcus.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You protected yourself.”

Marcus lowered his head.

Because he knew.

The final battle changed overnight.

Richard was no longer the enemy.

He was evidence.

A product of the system Victor created.

And Victor was something far more dangerous.

He had no ego.

No desire for fame.

No need for admiration.

He didn't want to be loved.

He wanted to win.

Victor made his first public move.

A statement appeared.

Not an apology.

Not a denial.

A declaration.

“The Whitmore family has been unfairly targeted by individuals seeking attention and revenge.”

Then he announced something shocking.

He would take control of Whitmore Holdings.

Legally.

Publicly.

And thousands of people believed him.

Because Victor did not look like a villain.

He looked like a solution.

Arthur watched the announcement.

Lily stood beside him.

“He doesn't seem afraid.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

Arthur looked at the screen.

“Because Richard needed people to believe he was powerful.”

A pause.

“Victor only needs people to believe he is necessary.”

That evening, Richard returned home.

For the first time, he had no guards.

No employees.

No assistants.

Only silence.

He found Arthur waiting.

Richard immediately became defensive.

“What are you doing here?”

Arthur looked at him.

“Your uncle is going to destroy everything.”

Richard laughed.

“Everything?”

A pause.

“You mean my empire?”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“The people who were hurt by it.”

Richard looked away.

“You expect me to help you?”

Arthur answered honestly.

“Yes.”

Richard smiled.

“You hate me.”

Arthur looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer surprised him.

“But hate is not the reason I’m here.”

A pause.

“Your family created monsters.”

Arthur looked directly at him.

“But you are the only one who can prove where they came from.”

Richard said nothing.

Because for the first time…

Someone wasn't trying to defeat him.

Someone was asking him to choose.

At midnight, Victor sat in his private office.

He received a message.

Arthur Miller has found the truth.

Victor smiled.

“Good.”

The assistant looked confused.

“Good?”

Victor nodded.

“Secrets are only valuable when someone discovers them.”

“Why?”

“Because then…”

He looked at the photograph of Arthur.

Emily.

Lily.

“Everyone watches the wrong battle.”

Victor turned off the screen.

The Whitmore empire was no longer hiding.

It was preparing.

And Arthur finally understood the truth.

Richard was never the final enemy.

He was only the first layer.

The real monster had been waiting behind the family name all along.

The last Whitmore secret was revealed.

But the war…

May you like

Had only entered its final stage.
