The following morning, Alexander met with an attorney while Sofia rested.
He placed a folder on the conference table.
"What is this?" the attorney asked.
"Everything my daughter saved."
Inside were messages from Carmen demanding the condominium.
Emails discussing transferring ownership after the wedding.
Draft agreements Sofia had refused to sign.
Voice messages.
Screenshots.
Even photographs of the injuries taken at the hospital.
The attorney looked up.
"She kept all of this?"
Alexander smiled sadly.
"She hoped she'd never need it."
Later that day, Javier asked to meet Sofia.
She agreed only if her attorney and both parents were present.
When he entered the room, he looked exhausted.
"I didn't know they would do that."
Sofia met his eyes.
"You heard them."
"I..."
"You stayed outside."
