PART 2 — The Officers Stopped Calling It a Family Argument
The first officer knelt beside Lily.
His expression changed immediately.
"How long was she in there?"
No one answered.
The paramedics carefully lifted Lily onto a stretcher.
One of them frowned.
"Her pupils are sluggish."
Another held up a small plastic bottle that had been tangled inside the garbage bags.
"Found this beside the child."
The label was half torn away.
Sleeping medication.
Marcus looked at me.
"I've never seen that bottle."
Neither had I.
Officer Ramirez turned toward my parents.
"Who was supervising the child this morning?"
My mother crossed her arms.
"She wandered outside."
The officer glanced at the closed commercial dumpster.
"Four-year-olds don't usually climb into locked dumpsters by themselves."
Silence.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Maybe she was playing."
Officer Ramirez wrote something into his notebook.
"Playing underneath thirty pounds of trash?"
No one laughed.
As the ambulance pulled away...
Marcus squeezed my hand.
"I'm going with Lily."
I nodded.
"I'll meet you."
He hesitated.
"I don't want to leave you here."
"You need to stay with our daughter."
He kissed my forehead and climbed into the ambulance.
I watched the doors close.
Then I turned back toward the house where I had grown up.
For the first time...
It didn't feel like home.
It felt like a crime scene.
The second officer approached me quietly.
"Ma'am..."
"Has anything like this happened before?"
I hesitated.
Then memories I had spent years excusing began lining up one after another.
Birthday presents that mysteriously disappeared.
Meals Lily was never served.
Doors locked "by accident."
Family photographs where my daughter was always asked to stand off to the side.
One incident alone could be dismissed.
Years of them...
Could not.
I looked him in the eye.
"Yes."

His pen stopped moving.
"Tell me everything."
