Chapter 12 — The Public Humiliation

Chapter 12 — The Public Humiliation
By sunrise, the story had already escaped the house.
Someone had leaked the video.
Not the recording of Martin.
Not the documents about Blue Harbor.
The footage of me.
Standing in my emerald-green dress outside the Anderson estate.
The bruises on my face.
My husband shouting.
Jared blocking the door.
And me holding the metal bar.
The clip had been edited to make one thing appear obvious:
I was the violent wife.
By eight in the morning, my name was everywhere.
BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS ATTACKS HUSBAND'S FAMILY AFTER BEING CONFRONTED ABOUT MONEY
Another headline appeared:
SOCIALITE BRIDE MELTS DOWN OVER PRENUP DISPUTE
And the worst one:
ELIZABETH CARTER: VICTIM OR GOLD-DIGGING MANIPULATOR?
I stared at the screen.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From fury.
Christopher walked into the room.
“Don't respond.”
“I wasn't going to.”
He looked at me.
“You're lying.”
“I was thinking about it.”
“That's why I said don't.”
I locked my phone.
“Who leaked it?”
“We're investigating.”
“Ryan?”
“Possibly.”
“Jared?”
“Possibly.”
“Martin?”
Christopher didn't answer.
I looked at him.
“It's Victor.”
He sighed.
“We don't know that.”
“I do.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor doesn't want me dead.”
I looked back at the headlines.
“He wants me discredited.”
The Interview
At nine-thirty, a television reporter appeared outside my building.
Then another.
Then six more.
Cars filled the street.
Cameras pointed toward the entrance.
A crowd gathered.
Someone shouted:
“Elizabeth! Did you assault your husband?”
Another yelled:
“Did you steal from the Anderson family?”
Then:
“Did you marry Dwight for his money?”
I stood behind the glass.
My name was being destroyed in real time.
Gemma came beside me.
“They're lying.”
“I know.”
“Then why aren't you saying anything?”
“Because they're waiting for me to lose control.”
She looked at me.
“And if you don't?”
I smiled faintly.
“Then they'll have to work harder.”
The Press Conference
By noon, the Anderson family had released an official statement.
I read it twice.
Then I laughed.
They claimed that I had:
verbally abused Jared,
threatened Susan,
damaged family property,
manipulated Dwight financially,
and attempted to seize assets belonging to the Anderson family.
There was no mention of the two slaps.
No mention of the forged documents.
No mention of the $200,000.
No mention of the recordings.
They had built an entirely new story.
And thousands of people believed it.
Then Susan appeared on television.
She wore black.
Her eyes were red.
Perfectly rehearsed grief.
“Elizabeth was like a daughter to us,” she said.
I nearly dropped the remote.
Susan continued:
“We tried to help her. Unfortunately, money changed her.”
Gemma whispered:
“She really has no shame.”
I stared at the screen.
Susan dabbed her eyes.
“We only wanted peace.”
Then Jared appeared.
His face was bruised.
The camera zoomed in.
He looked straight into the lens.
“She attacked me.”
I froze.
“He's lying,” Gemma said.
“I know.”
Jared continued:
“I never touched her.”
I looked at Christopher.
“That's a lie.”
“I know.”
“We have evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are we letting them do this?”
“Because the evidence isn't ready.”
I stared at the television.
Jared leaned toward the microphone.
“She was obsessed with controlling our family.”
The reporter asked:
“Are you afraid of her?”
Jared looked down.
Then whispered:
“Yes.”
The crowd outside erupted.
And for the first time, I understood the purpose of the humiliation.
They didn't need everyone to believe the truth.
They only needed enough people to doubt me.
The Invitation
At three in the afternoon, I received an invitation.
A charity gala.
Hosted by the Carter Foundation.
My own foundation.
But the invitation came from the Anderson family.
Christopher frowned.
“Don't go.”
“I'm going.”
“Elizabeth—”
“They've made me the villain.”
“Yes.”
“Then I'll give them the villain they deserve.”
He sighed.
“That isn't what I meant.”
I smiled.
“I know.”
The Red Carpet
That evening, hundreds of guests gathered beneath crystal chandeliers.
Celebrities.
Executives.
Politicians.
Investors.
Every major name connected to Baltimore's business community seemed to be there.
And everyone knew about me.
The moment I entered, conversations stopped.
Heads turned.
Phones came out.
Whispers followed me.
“That’s her.”
“The wife.”
“The one who attacked Jared.”
“I heard she stole millions.”
“I heard Dwight is divorcing her.”
“Didn't she threaten his family?”
I walked forward.
My black dress was simple.
No jewelry.
No security entourage.
Just me.
A reporter approached.
“Elizabeth! Any comment on the allegations?”
I kept walking.
Another stepped in front of me.
“Did you assault Jared Anderson?”
I stopped.
The room became silent.
I looked directly into the camera.
“Yes.”
A wave of whispers passed through the crowd.
I continued:
“I assaulted no one.”
The reporter blinked.
“But video footage appears to show—”
“Edited footage.”
“Are you saying the video is fake?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
I smiled.
“The full video will answer that.”
Then I walked away.
The Screen
Ten minutes later, the lights dimmed.
The foundation's presentation began.
Normally, it would have shown charity projects.
Hospitals.
Schools.
Scholarships.
Instead, the screen displayed a title:
THE NIGHT THEY LIED ABOUT ELIZABETH CARTER.
People gasped.
I hadn't authorized that presentation.
I looked toward Christopher.
He shook his head.
“Not me.”
The screen turned black.
Then the original footage began.
Jared's hand grabbing my arm.
Susan screaming.
Dwight standing behind them.
And then—
the slap.
The first.
The second.
The room went silent.
No editing.
No music.
No commentary.
Just the truth.
Jared's voice:
“If you walk out, don't bother coming back.”
My voice:
“If I walk out, your son will be served with divorce papers.”
Then the second slap.
A woman gasped.
Someone whispered:
“Oh my God.”
The footage continued.
My voice:
“The next person who lays a hand on me will be dealing with the police.”
Then the screen froze.
A final message appeared:
THE VIDEO THEY DIDN'T WANT YOU TO SEE.
The room erupted.
Phones came out.
Reporters rushed toward Jared.
He looked terrified.
Susan stood frozen.
And Dwight—
Dwight stared at me.
Not angrily.
Not defensively.
Almost proudly.
I didn't know why.
The Second Video
Before anyone could speak, another video appeared.
This one showed Martin.
Five years earlier.
He was sitting in a private office.
Victor Hale stood behind him.
Thomas Carter sat across the table.
And then Martin spoke.
“The girl has to marry Dwight.”
The entire ballroom went silent.
My heart stopped.
The video continued.
“Once she's married, the trust becomes accessible.”
Someone shouted:
“What is this?”
Martin continued:
“If she refuses, use the father.”
Thomas looked terrified.
“Leave my daughter out of this.”
Victor replied:
“You sold her once.”
Thomas whispered:
“I made a mistake.”
Victor answered:
“No. You made a deal.”
The video ended.
The ballroom exploded.
The Third Secret
Then another recording appeared.
Ashley.
My former maid of honor.
She sat in a restaurant.
Across from her was Martin.
He placed an envelope on the table.
Cash.
Ashley took it.
Martin said:
“All you have to do is make Elizabeth trust Dwight.”
Ashley nodded.
Then he added:
“And when she signs, you disappear.”
The audience reacted with horror.
I closed my eyes.
Ashley had stood beside me on my wedding day.
She had held my bouquet.
She had hugged me.
And she had been paid to destroy me.
The recording ended.
Then the final image appeared.
A bank transfer.
ASHLEY REED — $94,000
Nobody spoke.
The Anderson family had been exposed in front of the people they cared most about impressing.
Jared Breaks
Jared suddenly stood.
“This is fake!”
Nobody listened.
He pointed at me.
“She manipulated all of this!”
I looked at him.
“You told everyone I was violent.”
“You are!”
“Then explain the first video.”
He froze.
“You slapped me.”
“You slapped me first.”
“I never touched you.”
“Then why does the video show your hand?”
His face changed.
The crowd murmured.
I stepped closer.
“You wanted to humiliate me.”
He backed away.
“You wanted everyone to believe I was unstable.”
He looked toward Martin's empty chair.
But Martin wasn't there.
“Where is he?” I asked.
Jared didn't answer.
I turned toward Susan.
“Where is your husband?”
She whispered:
“I don't know.”
That was when the ballroom doors opened.
Police officers entered.
Everyone stopped.
The lead officer approached me.
“Ms. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“We need to speak with you.”
“About what?”
He looked toward Jared.
Then toward the screen.
“About an arrest warrant.”
Jared's face went white.
“For whom?”
The officer answered:
“Jared Anderson.”
Jared turned and ran.
Two officers caught him before he reached the exit.
The room erupted.
The Humiliation Reverses
Within minutes, the headlines changed.
VIDEO EXPOSES ANDERSON FAMILY LIES
JARED ANDERSON ARRESTED AFTER ASSAULT FOOTAGE SURFACES
BILLIONAIRE FAMILY ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD
WHO IS BLUE HARBOR?
But I didn't celebrate.
Because Christopher was staring at his phone.
“What?”
He showed me a message.
Victor Hale: You have won the public battle.
Another message followed.
Now comes the war.
I frowned.
“What war?”
Christopher's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?”
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“It's your father.”
My heart stopped.
“What about him?”
“He's gone.”
“From the hospital?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“No one knows.”
Then another message appeared.
This one was from an unknown number.
Thomas Carter has been taken.
My blood ran cold.
A second message followed.
Come alone if you want him alive.
I stared at the screen.
Christopher immediately said:
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I'm going.”
“Absolutely not.”
“They have my father.”
“They want you.”
“I know.”
“That's exactly why you don't go.”
I looked around the ballroom.
Everyone was still talking.
Reporters were shouting.
Jared was being taken away.
Susan was crying.
The family that had spent months humiliating me had finally been exposed.
But none of that mattered anymore.
Because the person who had been hiding the truth from me was now in danger.
My father.
The man who had lied.
The man who had accepted the $200,000.
The man who had betrayed my mother.
And somehow—
the man I still couldn't let die.
The Address
Another message appeared.
11:45 PM. OLD WARD FACTORY.
Then:
NO POLICE. NO CHRISTOPHER. NO DWIGHT.
I stared at the words.
Christopher took my phone.
“We're not doing this.”
“I have to.”
“No.”
“He knows something.”
“That's exactly what they want.”
“Then I'll give them what they want.”
He looked at me.
“You're not going alone.”
I shook my head.
“They specifically said—”
“I don't care.”
Before we could argue, someone approached.
Dwight.
He had heard everything.
“I'll go.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“You need someone who knows how they operate.”
“You've already betrayed me.”
“I know.”
“You could betray me again.”
“I could.”
He didn't pretend otherwise.
“But I won't.”
I stared at him.
Then he said:
“Because I know something you don't.”
“What?”
“The Ward factory isn't abandoned.”
My blood ran cold.
“What is it?”
“A trap.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“It's where my father took Nora six years ago.”
I froze.
“Nora was there?”
“Yes.”
“Is she alive?”
Dwight nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of what she would tell you.”
I stepped closer.
“What does Nora know?”
Dwight looked at me.
“She knows who really killed Evelyn Ward.”
I stopped breathing.
“My biological mother?”
“Yes.”
“Who killed her?”
Dwight whispered:
“Thomas Carter.”
My father's name struck me like a bullet.
“No.”
“I saw him.”
“You said he didn't shoot her.”
“He didn't.”
“Then what did he do?”
Dwight looked toward the darkened ballroom.
“He handed her to Victor.”
My blood turned cold.
“And Victor…”
He swallowed.
“…was the last person who saw her alive.”
I looked at the invitation still lying on the table.
The ballroom lights reflected off the paper.
The words seemed almost meaningless now.
Carter Foundation Charity Gala.
A public celebration.
A carefully staged humiliation.
A trap within a trap.
And somewhere in the city, my father had disappeared.
But before we left, my phone vibrated one final time.
A photograph appeared.
My mother.
Catherine.
Alive.
Standing beside a woman I didn't recognize.
The woman was holding a newborn baby.
Under the photograph was a message:
YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THE WRONG MOTHER.
Then:
COME TO THE FACTORY.
And finally:
BRING THE GIRL IN THE PHOTOGRAPH.
I stared at Gemma.
She looked terrified.
“Elizabeth…”
“What?”
She pointed at the baby.
“That isn't you.”
I looked closer.
Then my heart stopped.
Because the woman holding the baby wasn't Catherine.
It was Evelyn Ward.
And the baby in her arms—
was Nora.
Which meant the photograph had been taken after everyone claimed Evelyn was dead.
I looked at Dwight.
He whispered the words I had been dreading.
“Your mother lied about the date.”
The truth wasn't buried.
May you like
It had been waiting.
And tomorrow night, at the abandoned Ward factory, I was finally going to find out why.
