Chapter 13 — The Fall of Jared

Chapter 13 — The Fall of Jared

By midnight, Jared Anderson's name was no longer being whispered.

It was being shouted.

Every television station in Baltimore had replayed the footage from the gala. Every social media account seemed to have the same clip: Jared grabbing my arm, Jared blocking the door, Jared striking me, and Jared later standing in front of cameras claiming he had never touched me.

The lie had lasted months.

The truth had lasted six minutes.

And six minutes had destroyed him.

But I knew better than to celebrate.

Men like Jared didn't fall quietly.

They dragged people down with them.

The Arrest

The next morning, Christopher called me before breakfast.

“Jared is being held.”

“For assault?”

“That, and more.”

I sat up.

“What else?”

“The investigators searched several of his accounts last night.”

“And?”

“They found transfers.”

“From Martin?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Christopher paused.

“Enough to make the $200,000 look insignificant.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Where did the money go?”

“Several shell companies.”

“Blue Harbor?”

“Some of it.”

“What was the rest for?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

“That's what they're trying to determine.”

I walked to the window.

Outside, reporters were already gathering near the gates.

“Does Jared know about the recordings?”

“Yes.”

“Then he'll blame Martin.”

“He already has.”

I turned.

“Martin is still missing.”

Christopher nodded.

“And Susan?”

“She hired a lawyer.”

“Of course.”

“She also claims she knew nothing.”

I laughed.

“She always knows everything.”

Christopher didn't disagree.

Then he said something that made me stop laughing.

“There's one more thing.”

“What?”

“Jared requested to see you.”

“No.”

“He says he has information about Dwight.”

I frowned.

“About my husband?”

“Yes.”

“What kind of information?”

“He wouldn't say.”

I thought about the message from the previous night.

The Ward factory.

Nora.

Evelyn.

My father.

And now Jared wanted to talk.

Everything was converging too quickly.

“Where is he being held?”

Christopher told me.

I grabbed my coat.

The Interrogation Room

Jared looked smaller behind the glass.

Without his expensive suit.

Without his family.

Without the mansion.

He was simply a frightened man sitting beneath fluorescent lights.

When I entered, he looked up.

“Elizabeth.”

I sat across from him.

“You asked to see me.”

“Yes.”

“Talk.”

He looked toward the camera.

“They're listening.”

“Good.”

“I need protection.”

I almost smiled.

“You assaulted me.”

“I know.”

“You lied about it.”

“I know.”

“You tried to destroy my reputation.”

“I know.”

“And now you want my help?”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I want the truth.”

I leaned back.

“Then tell it.”

Jared looked at his hands.

“Martin is dead.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He was supposed to leave the country.”

“Supposed to?”

“He never made it.”

“Who killed him?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I saw the body.”

My blood ran cold.

“Where?”

“An old warehouse outside the city.”

“Why were you there?”

“Because he called me.”

“What did he say?”

“That everything had gone wrong.”

“What everything?”

“The trust.”

I stared at him.

“What happened to Blue Harbor?”

Jared laughed bitterly.

“That's the problem.”

“What?”

“Blue Harbor wasn't supposed to belong to anyone.”

The Hidden Ownership

Jared leaned forward.

“For years, everyone thought the trust was a fortune.”

“It isn't.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“It's a lock.”

I remembered Victor's words.

The evidence.

The hidden accounts.

The twenty-three families.

Jared continued.

“Martin believed he could unlock it.”

“And you?”

“I believed him.”

“Why?”

“Because he promised me a place at the top.”

“Instead, he used you.”

“Yes.”

“Like he used everyone.”

Jared nodded.

Then he whispered:

“But Martin was being used too.”

“By whom?”

He looked toward the observation window.

“Victor.”

My pulse quickened.

“You're saying Victor controlled Martin?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor needed Martin to find you.”

“I was already found.”

“No.”

Jared shook his head.

“He needed Martin to find the right version of you.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“You weren't supposed to inherit everything.”

“I know.”

“You were supposed to open it.”

“Open what?”

“The original Ward archive.”

My heart stopped.

“The archive?”

Jared nodded.

“Your blood is the key.”

The Genetic Lock

Jared explained that the original Ward trust had been designed decades ago.

It wasn't controlled by a password.

It wasn't controlled by a signature.

It was controlled by identity.

Only a verified descendant of Evelyn Ward could activate the final archive.

But there was a second requirement.

The descendant had to possess a specific genetic marker.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you know who designed the system.”

“Who?”

“Victor.”

I stared.

“Victor designed it?”

“Yes.”

“Why would he create a system that required my blood?”

“Because he knew you would eventually exist.”

I felt sick.

“He planned for me before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Jared looked at me.

“Because you weren't an accident.”

The Child

I couldn't speak.

Jared continued.

“Evelyn was pregnant when the trust was redesigned.”

“With me?”

“Yes.”

“Victor knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone say I was Thomas's daughter?”

“Because Thomas agreed to pretend.”

I closed my eyes.

My father's betrayal suddenly looked different.

He hadn't simply lied for money.

He had entered a protection arrangement.

But somewhere along the way, he had broken it.

“Why did Thomas accept the $200,000?”

“Because Victor offered him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Take the money and disappear, or tell Evelyn the truth and watch her die.”

My eyes opened.

“He chose the money.”

Jared nodded.

“And that's why he has lived with guilt ever since.”

I stared at the table.

For years, I'd hated my father.

Now I didn't know what I felt.

Anger.

Pity.

Disgust.

Maybe all three.

Jared's Last Card

“You said you had information about Dwight.”

Jared nodded.

“He knew.”

I froze.

“Knew what?”

“Everything.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You're lying.”

“Dwight knew Victor was your father.”

I stood.

Jared quickly added:

“But that's not the worst part.”

I stared at him.

“What is?”

“He knew where Nora was.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“Before your wedding.”

“And he didn't tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Nora asked him not to.”

I sat again.

“Why would she trust Dwight?”

“She didn't.”

“Then why?”

“Because Dwight saved her life.”

Six Years Earlier

Jared told me what happened in London.

Martin had sent Dwight to locate Nora.

Dwight found her working under another name.

He followed her.

He watched her.

He learned where she lived.

Then one night, men arrived at her apartment.

They weren't police.

They weren't debt collectors.

They were hired.

Dwight recognized one of them.

A former security officer who had worked for Victor.

Dwight intervened.

He got Nora out.

But before they escaped, Nora gave him something.

A key.

“What kind of key?”

“Metal.”

“To what?”

“The Ward archive.”

I stared at Jared.

“Where is it now?”

He smiled.

“With Dwight.”

My heart sank.

“Why didn't he give it to me?”

“Because he was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That the moment you opened the archive, everyone involved would come after you.”

I stood.

“That's already happening.”

“Yes.”

The Fall

When I left the detention center, reporters surrounded the building.

“Elizabeth!”

“Did Jared accuse you?”

“Is Dwight under investigation?”

“Did you know Victor Hale was your father?”

The last question stopped me.

My blood went cold.

The information had leaked.

Again.

I looked at Christopher.

His expression was grim.

“Someone is feeding them everything.”

I stepped toward the cameras.

A reporter shouted:

“Is it true that Victor Hale is your biological father?”

I said nothing.

Another shouted:

“Did your husband know?”

I turned away.

Then someone yelled:

“Was Evelyn Ward murdered?”

I stopped.

I looked directly into the cameras.

“Ask the people who spent decades hiding the answer.”

Then I walked away.

The Public Collapse

By afternoon, Jared's world collapsed.

The prosecutors announced additional charges.

Financial fraud.

Conspiracy.

Assault.

Evidence tampering.

And obstruction.

His accounts were frozen.

His properties were searched.

His vehicles were seized.

The Anderson family name, once associated with power, became associated with scandal.

Susan's social accounts disappeared.

Gemma received dozens of messages from strangers.

Dwight's photograph appeared beside mine on every news site.

And Martin—

Martin's disappearance became a national story.

But the biggest shock came at six p.m.

A press conference.

The district attorney announced:

“Investigators have obtained evidence connecting Jared Anderson to a larger financial conspiracy involving the Blue Harbor Trust.”

A reporter asked:

“Does this conspiracy include Elizabeth Carter?”

The prosecutor answered:

“At this time, Ms. Carter is considered a cooperating witness.”

I exhaled.

For the first time, someone in authority had publicly acknowledged that I wasn't the criminal.

Then the prosecutor said:

“We also believe there may be additional victims.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“Don't trust the prosecutor.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone who wants you alive.”

“What do you want?”

“Your husband has the key.”

I froze.

“Who?”

“Dwight.”

The line disconnected.

Dwight's Secret

I found Dwight at the old Carter property.

He was standing alone in the garden.

He didn't turn when I approached.

“You have something.”

“Yes.”

“The key.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Nora made me promise.”

“She isn't here.”

“She could be.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“I don't know.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I swear.”

“Jared said you saved her.”

Dwight looked down.

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because she reminded me of you.”

I hated how much that sentence hurt.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“You kept something from me that could change everything.”

“Yes.”

“Why should I trust you now?”

“You shouldn't.”

I stared at him.

He reached into his coat.

Then he placed a small metal key in my palm.

It was old.

Heavy.

Engraved with a symbol.

A blue harbor surrounded by three stars.

“The archive.”

I looked at him.

“Where?”

“Under the Ward factory.”

My heart raced.

“Nora?”

“Yes.”

“Is she there?”

“I don't know.”

“Who is?”

Dwight hesitated.

“Your mother.”

The Fall Wasn't Over

I stepped backward.

“My mother is at the factory?”

“I think so.”

“You think?”

“The message you received wasn't from Nora.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Nora never uses that symbol.”

I looked at the key.

The three stars.

“What does it mean?”

“Three heirs.”

“Me, Gemma, Nora.”

“Yes.”

“Then who sent the message?”

Dwight's face became pale.

“The fourth.”

I stared.

“There are only three.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“There are four.”

“Who?”

Dwight whispered:

“Catherine.”

I felt my heart stop.

“She isn't an heir?”

“No.”

“Then what is she?”

Dwight looked toward the dark road.

“The person who created the fourth identity.”

“What identity?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he pointed toward the road.

A black car had stopped outside the gate.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She was older.

Elegant.

Gray hair.

And even from a distance, I knew her.

My mother's posture.

My mother's walk.

My mother's face.

Catherine.

Alive.

She looked directly at me.

Then she raised her hand.

Not in greeting.

In warning.

Behind her, another car arrived.

Then another.

Men stepped out.

Catherine shouted something I couldn't hear.

Dwight grabbed my arm.

“Run.”

“What?”

“Now.”

The first gunshot shattered the garden lights.

Glass exploded above us.

I dropped to the ground.

Christopher's security team rushed forward.

Catherine disappeared behind the cars.

And in the chaos, I heard Dwight whisper:

“The fall of Jared was only the beginning.”

I looked at him.

“What comes next?”

He stared toward the road.

“The fall of the person who started all of this.”

“Victor?”

“No.”

His face was filled with fear.

“Catherine.”

My heart stopped.

Because the woman I had spent my entire life believing was my protector had just appeared in the middle of an ambush.

And someone was trying to kill her.

Which meant Jared had been right about one thing.

The truth was much bigger than the Anderson family.

May you like

And before the night ended, I was going to discover whether my mother had been protecting me—

or protecting herself.
