Chapter 3: The Test

Sophia staggered backward.

"But the doctors..."

"Were following my instructions," Ethan replied calmly.

He nodded toward the entrance of the estate.

His personal physician walked outside carrying a sealed medical file.

The doctor handed it directly to Sophia.

"You stole these reports from my office," he said.

"You were supposed to."

Sophia's hands trembled.

"What?"

Ethan folded his arms.

"Every document you found was intentionally left where you could discover it."

"They were false."

"I wanted to know one thing."

"If you believed I had lost everything..."

"...would you still stay?"

Sophia couldn't answer.

Because she already had.

The guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Many of them had witnessed her humiliating Ethan only moments earlier.

Mrs. Alvarez slowly stood.

For years she had watched Ethan build hospitals, scholarships, and charities without seeking recognition.

She had also watched Sophia become increasingly obsessed with his fortune.

Ethan looked toward his legal adviser.

"Please continue."

The attorney opened a leather portfolio.

"The Blackwood Family Trust contains a marriage clause."

Sophia frowned.

"What clause?"

"If either party is proven to have entered the engagement primarily for financial gain or abandons the relationship after a fabricated financial or medical crisis..."

"...that individual forfeits every benefit promised under the prenuptial agreement."

Sophia's face turned white.

"No..."

The attorney continued.

"The engagement ring remains property of the trust."

"The penthouse gifted during the engagement belongs to the foundation."

"The investment account established in your name has been closed."

Every smile disappeared from Sophia's face.
