CHAPTER 15

CHAPTER 15
THE MAN WHO NEVER LEFT
I read the sentence again.
ELENA WAS NEVER BORN.
My hands stopped shaking.
Not because I was calm.
Because there was nothing left inside me that knew how to react.
For twenty-five years, I had believed I was a woman who had been born, raised, married, betrayed, and abandoned.
I had believed I was a daughter.
A wife.
A mother.
Now the final DNA envelope was telling me I had never been born at all.
I had been made.
And Lily—
my baby—
had been taken from me.
I dropped the paper.
"No."
The word barely escaped my mouth.
"No."
I searched the room.
"Luka!"
Nothing.
"Daniel!"
Silence.
"Eva!"
Nothing.
Maria had disappeared.
The armed men had disappeared.
And Lily was gone.
I ran toward the door.
It opened.
The hallway beyond was empty.
I sprinted through it.
"Lily!"
My voice echoed through the abandoned clinic.
"LILY!"
No answer.
I reached the main entrance.
Rain poured outside.
Cars were gone.
Footprints covered the mud.
Too many.
I dropped to my knees.
Then I saw something.
A tiny pink blanket.
Lily's blanket.
I picked it up.
It was still warm.
My heart broke.
"Please."
I pressed it against my chest.
"Please, God."
Then a voice came from behind me.
"You won't find her outside."
I turned.
Daniel stood at the end of the hallway.
Blood covered his shirt.
His gun was gone.
His face was exhausted.
"Where is she?"
He didn't answer.
"WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?"
He closed his eyes.
"Elena..."
"Where is Lily?"
"She's alive."
"Where?"
"With Luka."
My heart stopped.
"Did he take her?"
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Then what happened?"
"He gave himself up."
"What?"
"To save her."
I stared at him.
"Explain."
Daniel walked toward me.
"Maria wasn't lying about everything."
"She kidnapped Lily."
"Yes."
"Luka followed them."
"Yes."
"He took Lily from her."
"Yes."
"Where?"
Daniel looked toward the underground passage.
"The original laboratory."
I froze.
"The one beneath the clinic?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"The first one."
"Where?"
"Under your father's house."
I felt cold.
"The house burned down."
"It wasn't destroyed."
"What?"
"Robert built a second basement beneath it."
I stared.
"Why?"
"Because that's where M-00 began."
I tightened my grip around the blanket.
"Take me there."
Daniel nodded.
The old Hayes house stood beyond the forest.
The structure was barely recognizable.
The roof had collapsed.
The windows were black holes.
Trees grew through the walls.
But Daniel knew exactly where to go.
He walked around the back.
Stopped beside a dead oak.
Then moved three stones.
Nothing happened.
He moved a fourth.
The ground shifted.
A metal door rose from beneath the mud.
I stared.
"My father built this?"
"Yes."
"How long has it been here?"
"Twenty-five years."
Daniel opened it.
We descended.
The stairs seemed endless.
The deeper we went, the colder the air became.
Then the walls changed.
Old concrete became white laboratory panels.
Lights flickered overhead.
A sign appeared.
PROJECT M-00
I stopped.
"Daniel."
"I know."
"What happened here?"
He looked at the sign.
"This is where Robert created you."
I touched the wall.
A strange sensation ran through my body.
Memory.
Not a dream.
Not an implanted image.
A real memory.
A baby crying.
A woman screaming.
A man saying:
"She's alive."
Then another voice.
"Then begin again."
I pulled my hand away.
"I remember."
Daniel looked at me.
"What?"
"The first room."
"What did you see?"
"My mother."
He went pale.
"Maria?"
"No."
I closed my eyes.
"Another woman."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
We continued.
At the end of the corridor was a large glass chamber.
Inside stood Luka.
He was holding Lily.
My heart stopped.
"Luka."
He looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Lily began crying.
I ran toward the glass.
"Lily!"
Luka placed his hand against the glass.
"I'm sorry."
"Open the door."
"I can't."
"Open it!"
"Elena..."
"OPEN THE DOOR!"
He shook his head.
"If I open it, they will kill her."
"Who?"
Luka looked behind him.
I followed his eyes.
Marcus stood in the shadows.
Alive.
My blood froze.
"No."
He smiled.
"You always were difficult."
Daniel raised his gun.
Marcus laughed.
"You still think bullets matter."
He looked at me.
"Do you know why you were made?"
"To be a weapon."
"No."
"To carry M-00."
"No."
"Then tell me."
Marcus stepped closer.
"You were made because Maria died."
I stared.
"She was the first successful subject."
"Her body could regenerate."
"But she couldn't reproduce."
"So Robert tried to create a child from her cells."
"Me."
"Yes."
"But you failed."
Marcus smiled.
"Robert failed."
"Then why am I alive?"
"Because I helped."
I felt sick.
"You."
"Yes."
"You created me."
"Partly."
"Then who is my father?"
Marcus smiled.
"There was no father."
My blood ran cold.
"You were created from Maria's cells."
"Robert added his own genetic material."
"And Adrian's."
"And mine."
"And Victor's."
"Then I am..."
"A composite."
I stared.
"Not a clone."
"Not exactly."
"Not human."
"Not entirely."
Daniel whispered:
"That's why the DNA report said seventeen percent original human DNA."
Marcus nodded.
"Elena was the prototype."
I looked at Lily.
"Then why create her?"
Marcus's smile disappeared.
"Because you were dying."
I froze.
"What?"
"Your body has been rejecting the artificial sequence for years."
"That's why you were sick."
"That's why your memories failed."
"That's why your body couldn't stabilize."
I shook my head.
"You made Lily to save me."
"Yes."
"Then why take her?"
"Because she succeeded."
I stared.
"She carries the stabilized sequence."
"Her cells can repair yours."
"Then let me have her."
Marcus shook his head.
"Too late."
"What?"
"Her DNA has already begun changing."
My heart stopped.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
He looked at Luka.
"He did."
I turned.
Luka looked down.
"What did you do?"
"I gave her my blood."
My heart stopped.
"Why?"
"Because Maria's people were draining her."
"What?"
"She was dying."
"I had to keep her alive."
I looked at Lily.
"Your blood..."
"Matched hers."
"Because you're Adrian."
Luka nodded.
"Yes."
I stared.
"You are Adrian."
"Yes."
"The real Adrian?"
He looked at me.
"I don't know anymore."
Marcus laughed.
"He's the closest thing to the original."
Luka ignored him.
"I remember everything now."
"What?"
"The night they killed me."
I stepped closer.
"Tell me."
"Marcus ordered Robert to destroy me."
"Why?"
"Because I refused to let them use Maria."
"Then what happened?"
"Robert helped me escape."
"And?"
"I came back."
"Why?"
Luka looked at Lily.
"Because I knew one day there would be another child."
I stared.
"Another child?"
"A child who could survive."
"A child who could end this."
I looked at Marcus.
"End what?"
"The Moretti project."
Luka's voice became quiet.
"All of it."
Marcus's face hardened.
"Enough."
He raised his gun.
Daniel stepped in front of me.
Marcus fired.
Daniel collapsed.
"Daniel!"
I ran toward him.
He was bleeding.
Again.
Always bleeding.
Always standing between me and death.
I knelt beside him.
"Stay with me."
He smiled.
"Seems like I've done this before."
"Don't joke."
"I'm not."
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out a small key.
"Robert gave me this."
"When?"
"Before he died."
I stared at it.
"What is it?"
"The master control."
"For the laboratory?"
"No."
He looked at me.
"For your memories."
I froze.
"What?"
"Robert said there was one memory he couldn't erase."
"Which one?"
"Your first memory."
I took the key.
"Where?"
Daniel pointed toward the control room.
"Inside."
I stood.
Marcus shouted:
"Don't!"
I ran.
He fired.
The bullet hit the wall beside my head.
I reached the control room.
Inserted the key.
The screen came alive.
SUBJECT M-00
MEMORY ARCHIVE
I pressed play.
The screen showed a laboratory.
A baby.
Me.
A woman holding me.
Not Maria.
Not the clone.
Someone else.
The woman looked directly at the camera.
I knew her.
I didn't know how.
But I knew her.
She was crying.
Then she said:
"My daughter."
I froze.
The recording continued.
"If they ever show this to Elena, tell her the truth."
A man appeared beside her.
Robert.
He looked young.
He was holding a newborn baby.
Not me.
Another baby.
A boy.
The woman looked at him.
"That's Adrian."
Robert nodded.
Then she looked at me.
"And that's Elena."
I stared at the screen.
Two babies.
Born at the same time.
But one was me.
The other was Adrian.
The woman continued:
"They are siblings."
My heart stopped.
Not clones.
Not experiments.
Siblings.
The woman was their mother.
Maria.
The real Maria.
She wasn't M-00.
She wasn't M-05.
She was human.
She had given birth to both of us.
Robert's voice came from behind her.
"Marcus wants Adrian."
Maria shook her head.
"Then give him me."
"No."
"Robert."
"I won't."
"Then he'll kill both children."
Robert looked toward the camera.
"I have a plan."
The recording changed.
Robert carried me away.
Maria carried Adrian.
Then Marcus entered.
The screen went black.
A final recording appeared.
Robert.
Older.
Tired.
"If Elena is watching this, she needs to know one thing."
He looked directly into the camera.
"She was born."
My breath caught.
"She was my daughter."
"Maria was her mother."
"Adrian was her brother."
"I did not create her."
"I saved her."
I covered my mouth.
The final words appeared.
ELENA WAS NEVER A COPY.
THE COPY WAS MADE AFTER HER.
I began crying.
All those years.
All those lies.
I had believed I was artificial.
I wasn't.
I was human.
I was a daughter.
A sister.
A mother.
I had simply been taught to hate myself.
The screen went black.
Then one final message appeared.
THE MAN WHO NEVER LEFT WAS ADRIAN.
I turned.
Luka was standing behind the glass.
Holding Lily.
His eyes were filled with tears.
"I was there."
"When?"
"The night you were born."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Robert told me to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because Marcus would use me to find you."
"So you left."
"Never."
He touched the glass.
"I was always there."
I stared at him.
"The stranger at the hospital."
"Me."
"The man who signed the birth certificate."
"Me."
"The man who knew my father."
"Me."
"The man who protected Lily."
"Me."
I cried.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you weren't ready."
I shook my head.
"You don't get to decide that."
"I know."
"Everyone kept deciding for me."
"I know."
"Everyone lied."
"I know."
"Why were you the one who stayed?"
He smiled sadly.
"Because I promised your mother."
"What promise?"
"That if anything happened to her..."
He looked at Lily.
"...I'd protect her children."
I froze.
"Both of us?"
He nodded.
"You and Adrian."
"But Adrian died."
He looked at me.
"No."
"I survived."
"And I became Luka."
I stared at him.
My brother.
The stranger.
The man who had never left.
Then Marcus appeared behind him.
He raised his gun.
I moved before I could think.
I stepped between them.
"Don't."
Marcus smiled.
"Move."
"No."
"You'll die."
"Maybe."
I looked at him.
"But this time, you don't get to decide who survives."
Marcus fired.
Luka pushed me aside.
The bullet hit him.
He fell.
"No!"
I caught him.
Blood spread across his chest.
Marcus raised the gun again.
Daniel appeared behind him.
Still bleeding.
Still standing.
He fired.
Marcus fell.
The laboratory became silent.
I held Luka.
"Stay with me."
He smiled weakly.
"I told you."
"What?"
"I never leave."
I laughed through my tears.
"You'd better not."
He closed his eyes.
"Luka!"
His eyes opened again.
"I'm Adrian."
"I know."
"And you're my sister."
"I know."
He smiled.
Then Lily began crying.
I looked at her.
Alive.
Safe.
Mine.
For the first time, I understood everything.
The tattooed stranger had never been a stranger.
He had been the man who watched over me from the shadows.
The brother who disappeared so I could live.
The man who signed the father line because he knew no legal document could ever describe what he truly was.
He wasn't Lily's father.
He was something more important.
He was family.
Six months later, the Moretti laboratory was gone.
Victor was arrested.
Marcus died before trial.
The remaining M-17 files were turned over to an independent investigation.
Eva disappeared for several months.
Then one morning, she sent me a letter.
She apologized.
I forgave her.
Not completely.
But enough.
Daniel survived.
He spent months in recovery.
We never remarried.
We never pretended the past hadn't happened.
But we became friends.
For Lily.
And for ourselves.
He eventually told the truth about everything he had done.
And for the first time, he stopped running from it.
As for me—
I stopped being afraid of my DNA.
I stopped asking whether I was real.
I was real.
My pain was real.
My memories were real.
My love for Lily was real.
That was enough.
And Luka?
He survived.
The bullet missed his heart by less than an inch.
He still complained about the scar.
I told him it suited him.
He laughed.
For the first time, I heard him laugh without fear.
One evening, I stood outside my house with Lily in my arms.
She was almost one year old.
Luka sat beside me.
"You know," he said, "you never answered my question."
"What question?"
"The day we met."
I smiled.
"What did you ask?"
"You asked what kind of man I was."
I remembered.
The hospital.
The pale green wall.
The pink gown.
Daniel walking away.
Luka appearing from the corridor.
The black clothes.
The tattoos.
The cold eyes.
The newborn in my arms.
And the line on the birth certificate.
FATHER.
I smiled.
"So?"
"What kind of man are you?"
Luka looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"The kind who never leaves."
I leaned my head against his shoulder.
And for the first time in twenty-five years—
I believed him.
Because some people enter your life as strangers.
Some arrive as enemies.
Some arrive as lies.
But sometimes—
the person you think abandoned you...
is the person who spent his entire life finding his way back.
I looked down at Lily.
She opened her eyes.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around mine.
And I whispered:
"You're safe."
Luka looked at us.
"Both of you."
The sun disappeared behind the trees.
The world finally became quiet.
No laboratories.
No secrets.
No files.
No DNA envelopes.
No men waiting in shadows.
Just a mother.
Her daughter.
And the brother who had never really left.
And somewhere deep inside me, I finally understood the truth.
Blood can create a family.
But it is love that decides who stays.
And Luka had stayed.
Even when I couldn't see him.
Even when I hated him.
Even when I believed I was alone.
May you like
He had never left.
Not once.
