CHAPTER 13 — THE FATHER IN THE SHADOWS

CHAPTER 13 — THE FATHER IN THE SHADOWS

The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like me.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly.

Same eyes.

Same mouth.

Same dark hair.

Even the tiny scar above her eyebrow was in the same place.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Amelia stirred in my arms.

The woman smiled at her.

"Hello, little one."

I immediately stepped backward.

"Don't come near her."

Her smile faded.

"Still protective."

"Who are you?"

My mother whispered:

"Maria."

The woman looked at her.

"Mother."

The word struck me harder than anything else.

I looked at Elena.

"You said I was an only child."

She didn't answer.

"Mom."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I lied."

The woman stepped into the room.

"I was born six minutes before you."

I stared.

"My twin."

She nodded.

"Your identical twin."

I couldn't speak.

All my life I had believed I was alone.

My mother had told me my father died.

That I had no siblings.

That our family had been small.

But apparently, almost every sentence of my childhood had been a lie.

Maria walked toward the desk.

"I was Subject M-02."

I looked at the file.

"M-01."

She nodded.

"You were M-01."

"Why?"

"Because you were the first."

"The first what?"

"The first child who could remember."

I felt cold.

"And you?"

"I was the control."

"The control?"

"They changed me."

She touched the scar on her eyebrow.

"They altered my memories instead."

I stared.

"Why?"

"To see how much a human being could be manipulated."

I looked at my mother.

"You allowed this?"

Elena shook her head.

"I tried to stop them."

Maria laughed.

"You tried to stop them after they had already taken us."

My mother flinched.

"You don't know everything."

"I know enough."

Maria turned toward me.

"She told you she protected us."

"Didn't she?"

"No."

She looked at Elena.

"She protected the program."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Which one of you is telling the truth?"

Maria smiled sadly.

"That's the problem."

She picked up the folder.

"Neither of us remembers everything."

I frowned.

"What?"

"Our memories were altered."

"Both of you?"

"Yes."

"By whom?"

Maria's expression darkened.

"Father."

My blood froze.

"Robert?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Thomas?"

"No."

"Then who?"

Maria looked toward the hallway.

"The man you've been searching for."

I swallowed.

"My father."

She nodded.

"Michael Bennett."

I stared.

"He's already here."

The lights went out.

Again.

A door slammed somewhere below.

Then the emergency system came alive.

Red lights flashed across the corridor.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

"Stay behind me."

Maria laughed.

"You still think you can protect her?"

Ethan glared at her.

"Yes."

"You couldn't even protect your own son."

His face tightened.

I stepped between them.

"Enough."

Then I heard a voice.

"Claire."

Michael.

My father.

I turned.

He stood at the far end of the corridor.

His face was exhausted.

His clothes were covered in dust.

But his eyes were fixed on me.

"I came for you."

I stepped forward.

"Where were you?"

He stopped.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

"Everyone says that."

"I know."

"Then tell me the truth."

He looked at Maria.

Then Elena.

Then me.

"Your mother was never supposed to have twins."

I stared.

"What?"

"You were."

He pointed toward Maria.

"She wasn't planned."

Maria's expression hardened.

"That's a lie."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

"You separated us."

"I had to."

"You gave me to Thomas."

"I was trying to save Claire."

Maria laughed bitterly.

"You always chose her."

I looked at Michael.

"Why?"

He looked at me.

"Because you were the one who could destroy the program."

I froze.

"How?"

"You remembered."

"Remembered what?"

"The first experiment."

I shook my head.

"Subject Zero."

Michael nodded.

"The original child."

"The boy who died?"

"No."

My heart stopped.

"He didn't die."

I stared.

"Then where is he?"

Michael looked at Maria.

She whispered:

"He's alive."

My blood ran cold.

"Who?"

Michael took a breath.

"Your brother."

I couldn't move.

"That's impossible."

"No."

"Mom said he died."

"Your mother believed he died."

Maria stepped forward.

"Because Father made her believe it."

"Father?"

Michael nodded.

"Thomas."

I looked at the hallway.

"Then who is the man calling himself Thomas?"

Michael's face hardened.

"Not Thomas."

I froze.

"What?"

"He stole Thomas Whitmore's identity."

"Then who is he?"

Michael whispered:

"His name is Adrian Vale."

The room fell silent.

Robert had been wrong.

My mother had been wrong.

Ethan had been wrong.

For thirty years, everyone had been chasing the wrong man.

The person controlling the Whitmore family wasn't Thomas.

It was Adrian Vale.

A man who had assumed the identity of a dead heir.

A man who had created the program.

A man who had watched me since childhood.

I looked at Maria.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"I discovered it six years ago."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I couldn't reach you."

"Why?"

"Because Ethan was watching you."

I looked at Ethan.

He went pale.

"That's not true."

Maria laughed.

"You reported everything."

Ethan shook his head.

"I was undercover."

"For whom?"

"The FBI."

Silence.

I stared.

"You were working with federal investigators?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because if Adrian knew, he'd kill you."

Maria crossed her arms.

"And yet he married you."

Ethan looked at me.

"I never wanted the marriage."

My heart tightened.

"Then why?"

"Because it was the only way to stay close to you."

"To protect me?"

"Yes."

I looked at the marriage certificate.

The fake one.

The manipulated one.

"So everything between us was a lie."

Ethan shook his head.

"The marriage was."

"What about the love?"

He stepped closer.

"That wasn't."

I couldn't answer.

Then Amelia cried.

I looked down.

She reached toward Maria.

"Mommy."

I froze.

Maria smiled.

"She remembers me."

I tightened my arms.

"Why would she call you Mommy?"

Maria looked at me.

"Because she remembers the night she was born."

My heart stopped.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"Who held her?"

"I did."

I looked at my mother.

"Why?"

Maria's voice became quiet.

"Because you couldn't."

I frowned.

"Why not?"

"You were unconscious."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

Maria looked at Elena.

"Tell her."

My mother closed her eyes.

"You hemorrhaged."

"What?"

"You almost died."

I stared.

"Then?"

"Maria held Amelia."

"And my son?"

"You were still unconscious."

"Who held him?"

Silence.

I knew.

"Michael."

He nodded.

"I did."

I looked at my father.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"You saw them."

"Yes."

"You let them take my daughter."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to stop them."

"Did you?"

"No."

I stepped backward.

"Why?"

"Because they had a gun to your head."

I froze.

"What?"

"Adrian had you under surveillance."

Michael's voice broke.

"He told me that if I interfered, you'd die."

I looked at Maria.

"Then why did you survive?"

She looked away.

"Because I made a deal."

"What deal?"

"I became Subject M-02."

I didn't understand.

"They wanted to know if identical twins could be conditioned differently."

She touched her temple.

"They used me."

"How?"

"They erased me."

I stared.

"What?"

"They erased everything."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Every memory of you."

I couldn't speak.

"When did you remember?"

"Six years ago."

"How?"

"Your daughter."

I frowned.

"Amelia?"

Maria nodded.

"When she was born, something happened."

"What?"

"The genetic marker activated."

"What marker?"

"The memory trait."

My heart tightened.

"That's why she remembers you."

"Yes."

"Because she's connected to both of us."

Maria nodded.

"Exactly."

A gunshot exploded.

Everyone dropped.

Michael fired toward the hallway.

Someone shouted.

"GET DOWN!"

Ethan grabbed me.

"Move!"

We ran into the records room.

Maria slammed the door.

Bullets struck the wall.

Amelia began crying.

I covered her ears.

"It's okay."

Another shot.

Then silence.

Michael whispered:

"They're coming."

"Who?"

"Adrian's men."

"How many?"

"Too many."

Ethan checked his weapon.

"Then we need another exit."

Maria pointed toward the floor.

"There's a tunnel."

I stared.

"Where?"

"Under the maternity ward."

My stomach tightened.

"Where does it lead?"

"To the original laboratory."

I froze.

"Room 17."

She nodded.

"That's where they took your son."

My heart stopped.

"My son?"

"Yes."

"He's there?"

"Yes."

I immediately moved toward the hidden door.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

"Claire."

"I'm getting my son."

"We don't know what's waiting."

"I don't care."

He looked into my eyes.

Then released me.

"Then I'm coming."

Michael followed.

Maria stayed behind.

I looked at her.

"You're not coming?"

She smiled.

"I have something to finish."

"What?"

She picked up a gun.

"Your father."

I looked at Michael.

He shook his head.

"Don't."

Maria smiled.

"Too late."

The tunnel was narrow.

Cold.

Wet.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Children.

Dozens of them.

Some had names.

Some had numbers.

Some had nothing.

Then I saw one photograph.

A little boy.

Green eyes.

Dark hair.

A crescent-shaped mark beneath his ear.

I stopped.

"That's him."

Michael stared.

"Yes."

"Who?"

"Your brother."

I touched the photograph.

"What's his name?"

Michael hesitated.

"Lucas."

I whispered:

"Lucas."

A sound came from ahead.

A child crying.

I ran.

"Lucas?"

The crying stopped.

Then a little boy's voice answered:

"Mom?"

I froze.

Michael grabbed my shoulder.

"Claire."

"No."

I pulled away.

I ran into the next room.

A small boy stood behind a glass wall.

Five years old.

Green eyes.

Dark hair.

The same birthmark.

He stared at me.

Then whispered:

"You're her."

I fell to my knees.

"Who?"

He pointed toward the ceiling.

"The woman in the pictures."

My heart broke.

"What woman?"

"Mommy."

I looked at Michael.

He was crying.

The boy pressed his hand against the glass.

"I've been waiting."

I touched the glass.

"I'm here."

He smiled.

Then the lights turned on.

A voice came through the speaker.

Adrian.

"Beautiful reunion."

I turned.

The doors locked.

A red light began flashing.

Adrian continued:

"You've finally found the missing piece."

I looked at Lucas.

"What do you want?"

"Not him."

"What?"

"You."

I froze.

"Why?"

"Because your memories contain the original sequence."

"What sequence?"

"The instructions."

"For what?"

Adrian laughed.

"The program."

I stared.

"You want my memories."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you were the first successful subject."

"Then take them."

Ethan grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

Adrian laughed.

"She doesn't have a choice."

A machine descended from the ceiling.

Metal arms.

Needles.

Wires.

I backed away.

"No."

Adrian's voice became cold.

"Thirty years ago, we erased your memories."

He paused.

"Tonight, we put them back."

The machine activated.

Lucas screamed.

Michael raised his gun.

"Stop!"

Adrian laughed.

"You can't stop what you've already started."

The machine lowered.

A needle touched my temple.

Then—

the doors exploded.

Maria stood in the smoke.

She had blood on her face.

A gun in her hand.

And behind her—

my mother.

Elena looked at me.

"Claire."

I stared.

"What are you doing?"

She whispered:

"Finishing what I started."

She turned toward the machine.

And shot it.

Sparks exploded.

The machine died.

Adrian screamed through the speaker.

"You stupid woman!"

My mother smiled.

"No."

She looked at me.

"Just a mother."

Then the entire laboratory began shaking.

Alarms blared.

Michael grabbed Lucas.

Ethan grabbed me.

"Move!"

We ran.

Behind us, fire spread across the walls.

Maria stayed behind.

"Come on!"

She shook her head.

"I'll hold them."

"Maria!"

She looked at me.

For the first time, she smiled like a sister.

"Run, Claire."

I didn't want to leave her.

But my mother pulled me away.

We ran.

The tunnel collapsed behind us.

And just before the darkness swallowed the laboratory—

I heard Maria's voice.

"Tell Lucas I remembered him."

Then everything went black.

When I opened my eyes, I was outside.

Rain was falling.

Sirens filled the night.

Ethan was beside me.

My mother was on the ground.

Michael was holding Lucas.

But Amelia was gone.

I screamed.

"Where is Amelia?"

Ethan looked around.

"She was here."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

I ran toward the hospital.

Then I saw something on the ground.

A small pink bracelet.

Amelia's.

Beside it was a note.

I picked it up.

Three words.

COME TO THE HOUSE.

I turned toward my childhood home.

The lights were on.

Someone was waiting inside.

And as I stared at the windows—

I saw a silhouette.

A woman.

Holding my daughter.

My mother whispered:

"That's not Amelia's mother."

I looked at her.

"Then who is she?"

My mother's face went white.

"The woman who signed your name."

The silhouette lifted Amelia toward the window.

Then smiled.

May you like

And I realized—

the woman looked exactly like me.
